Master Alonzo Jordan Parks
From May 2012 . . . Where Is Alonzo Now?
Alonzo is now a 9th grade student at Bayside High School in Virginia Beach, VA where he has perfect attendance and spends his time focusing on his studies.
Alonzo is the son of Nadine Ogburn, brother of Jaysaun Williams, grandson of Deaconess Evelyn L Williams, and the cousin of Robert L. Williams, Jr. He loves to read and is interested in Technology; and he is also a great swimmer. His first goal choice is to attend Yale University and his second choice is to join the US Navy. Hopefully, he will have success in his future plans.
His participation with the Youth Ministry of NFBCT has not wavered. Alonzo attends the Boys Sunday School Class and Vacation Bible School, sings with the Steelettes Youth Choir, and is a member of Junior Missionary Ministry and Junior Usher Ministry.
“For God
so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life”, John 3:16 is his favorite scripture and “Oh, Freedom” is Alonzo’s favorite Christian song. We want to continue to pray for Alonzo as he continues to grow in the Lord.
Let’s give a loud “Bless You” to Alonzo J. Parks our “Youth in the Spotlight”.

Sister Ora W. Burton
Seventy-two (72) years ago, Sister Ora W. Burton became a
member of First Baptist Church Taylorsville (now known as
New First Baptist Church, Taylorsville). Sister Burton (83
years of age) was married to the late Edward T. Burton and is
the mother of two sons and four daughters; Toora Askew and
spouse, William Askew, Vanessa Hinton, Althea Rawls and
spouse, Lee Rawls, Joseph Burton, Trustee Imn Burton and spouse,
Trusteette Joycetine Burton, and Kathy Burton-Bell; the grandmother of 10 (one
deceased); and the great grandmother of three plus one upcoming great grandchild. She is
also the sister of Lillie B. Williams and the sister-in-law of Deaconess Frances Williams.
Over the years, Sister Burton has been very active in her community, a former member
of the Virginia Lung Association, the Hygeia Toast Mistress Club, and the Martha Chapter
#10 Order of the Eastern Star for 62 years where she was recently honored for her of years
of service.
She started attending New First Baptist Church Taylorsville at an early age. The church
was on the same side of the street as their home; and her mother would watch her walk to
and enter the church. She eventually joined at the age of 12. She enjoyed taking part in the
various activities, plays (Christmas and Easter) and speeches (always memorized). Sister
Burton is an original member of the Hospitality Ministry (formerly known as the
Hospitality Club organized in 1984) and served as treasurer where they quietly helped
those in need, visited the sick, prepared and served a repast to bereaved families, prepared
meals for Vacation Bible School, and prepared a great “soul food” feast in support of
Black History Month. She is also a former church staff member, Church Typist.
While attending I. C. Norcom High School, Sister Burton and her sister, Lillie B.
Williams delivered the evening paper, The Ledger Dispatch and The Journal and Guide in
the Taylorsville, Norcom Park, Maple Shades, Mount Hermon, and West Mount Hermon
communities. After graduating from high school, she worked at Maryview Hospital,
Portsmouth Naval Hospital, and the Norfolk Naval Base (Supply Tech) and retired
after 29 years of service.
Sister Burton loves and believes in taking care of her family; helping her sister, Lillie B.
Williams, raise their niece and nephew after the passing of their younger sister, Naomi;
she has cared for her daughter after a serious accident and her grandson (Lil Melvin Bell)
until he passed.

MEMORIAL DAY OBSERVANCE ~ Sunday, May 24th
The Men’s Ministry is planning a “Tribute” to all of our Deceased Veterans during the 7 AM and 11:15 AM Services.
You may contribute to this effort by submitting a uniformed picture (preferred) or a regular picture of your deceased veteran. All pictures along with the
completed information card (located in the fellowship hall) are due today, May 3rd. You may submit to the church office, Deacon Fred Rodgers or Deacon Everett Brower.
“All pictures will be returned.”
She loves cooking many homemade dishes (her specialty, Ora’s World Famous, Mac and
Cheese), doing word search puzzles, reading, and especially taking care of her family.
Her favorite scripture, II Corinthians 12:9, “And he said unto me, My grace is sufficient for
thee: for my strength is made perfect in weakness. Most gladly therefore will I rather glo-
ry in my infirmities, that the power of Christ may rest upon me” and her favorite Chris-
tian song, “I Called on the Lord and I Got an Answer.”
What she loves about NFBCT: The People! We are family and there is so much love
and she enjoys the worship services and fellowship with one another. We want to thank
Sister Burton for her many years of service and we want to give a loud “Bless You” to Sis-
ter Ora W. Burton, our Senior in the Spotlight.

TYPE 1 DIABETES occurs when the body's own immune system destroys the insulin-producing
cells of the pancreas (called beta cells).
Normally, the hormone insulin is secreted by the pancreas in low amounts. When you eat a meal, sugar (glucose) from food stimulates the pancreas to release insulin. The amount that is released is proportional to the amount that is required by the size of that particular meal.
INSULIN'S main role is to help move certain nutrients -- especially sugar -- into the cells of the body's tissues. Cells use sugars and other nutrients from meals as a source of energy to function.
In people with Type 1 diabetes, sugar isn't moved into the cells, because insulin is not available. When sugar builds up in the blood, the body's cells starve for nutrients and other systems in the body must provide energy for many important bodily functions.
High blood sugar develops and can cause: • Dehydration. The buildup of sugar in the blood can cause an increase in urination (to try to clear the sugar from the body).
• Weight loss. The loss of sugar in the urine means a loss of calories.
• Diabetic Ketoacidosis (DKA). Without insulin and because the cells are starved of energy, the body breaks down fat cells.
• Damage to the body. High sugar levels in the blood may damage the nerves and small blood vessels of the eyes, kidneys, and heart, and atherosclerosis (hardening) of the large arteries that can cause heart attack and stroke.
Who Gets Type 1 Diabetes? Although the disease usually starts in people under age 20, Type 1 diabetes may occur at any age.
(Previously know as Juvenile Diabetes)
The disease is relatively uncommon, accounting for only about 5% of people with diabetes. The condition is more common in whites than in blacks and occurs equally in men and women.
What Are the Symptoms of Type 1 Diabetes? The symptoms are often subtle, but they can become severe.
• Increased thirst
• Increased hunger (especially after eating)
• Dry mouth
• Nausea and occasionally vomiting
• Abdominal pain
• Frequent urination
• Unexplained weight loss (even though you
are eating and feel hungry)
• Fatigue (weak, tired feeling)
• Blurred vision
How Is Type 1 Diabetes Managed?
Many people with type 1 diabetes live long, healthy lives. The key to good health is keeping your blood sugar levels within your target range, which can be done with meal planning, exercise, and intensive insulin therapy. All people with Type 1 diabetes must use insulin injections to control their blood sugar.
You will also need to check your blood sugar levels regularly and make adjustment of insulin, food, and activities to maintain a normal sugar.
