Selecting an ItineraryThis document outlines all of the itineraries offered at the

Mormon Handcart Historic Site during each week of the 2018

season. Each of the itineraries is unique, and each is offered

once every week of the trekking season. Please note that all

itineraries are detailed to start on specific days of the week,

which varies depending on the itinerary.

Once you have selected an itinerary that will best fit your

group’s needs, you can make a reservation at camping.lds.org,

using the name of the itinerary as listed in this document.

Group SizeThe itineraries in this document are designed for groups of

up to 200 people (including all youth, adults, leaders, and

support people). Please note that units may schedule only

one itinerary each. For example, if a stake had a group of 500

people, they would need to be separated into three different

groups within the stake, using a different ward to schedule

each group. Then in the comments section of the scheduling

form, the person making the reservation can write that his or

her group is associated with the other wards scheduling.

Wards or groups within the same stake could schedule

consecutive itineraries. For example, itineraries A1, A2, and

A3 have identical activities but are spaced 30 to 45 minutes

apart. Please direct any questions about scheduling groups

of over 200 people to the Mormon Handcart Historic Site

before scheduling.

Rocky RidgeEach year, the Mormon Handcart Historic Site receives a

limited number of permits to cross Rocky Ridge. The maximum

size of groups is 200 participants (two or more smaller groups

may combine to achieve this total). Visitors are allowed to cross

Rocky Ridge between July 1 and September 15 each year.

Selecting an Itinerary

If you would like to trek over Rocky Ridge, please make a

reservation for one of the itineraries that lists Rocky Ridge as

a possible activity. Because of our limited number of permits,

not all groups who request Rocky Ridge will be able to trek

over it. You will be notified if your group has been selected.

National Historic Trail TrainingFor groups that will trek over Rocky Ridge, all adults (both

trekking and support) are required to take National Historic

Trail (NHT) training within 24 hours before crossing. The time

and location for taking this 45-minute course will be deter-

mined by your itinerary before you cross Rocky Ridge.

Trek Leader TrainingTrek leader training is required for any group with more than

25 people. Training is held in the spring and the fall of each

year. Please call 1-307-328-2953 to schedule training.

Description of ActivitiesMartin’s Cove A visit to the cove is a quiet experience. No handcarts are al-

lowed in the cove, although rickshaws may be used for those

unable to walk. This activity usually has two parts: the Cove

Talk and the Cove Walk.

Cove Talk This time is intended to set the stage for the Cove Walk and

to share the experiences of the Martin handcart company.

Groups may designate a speaker or invite site missionaries

to share stories. Two amphitheaters at Martin’s Cove are

available: the lower amphitheater is for groups of fewer than

75 people, while the Dan Jones Amphitheater is for groups of

any size. Only the Dan Jones Amphitheater has audio equip-

ment (connections for MP3 players).

Cove WalkThis is a reverent, quiet walk through Martin’s Cove, best

conducted individually or in smaller groups, if possible. It is

an opportunity to ponder what happened at Martin’s Cove

and to honor those who lost their lives there.

Rescue StatuesThese monuments honor some of the men who rescued

members of the Martin handcart company.

Veil Crossing BridgeThis bridge near Martin’s Cove has two monuments—one on

each side. The first monument honors the pioneers of the

Martin handcart company. The second monument honors

the “second rescue,” in which the temple work was done for

the pioneers who died before they could receive these bless-

ings for themselves.

Devil’s GateThis geographical feature, which is half a mile from the Veil

Crossing Bridge, was a landmark for all pioneers. The Martin

handcart company found themselves stranded in this area

during a snowstorm.

Fort SeminoeThe original location of this historic fort is visible today. Visi-

tors can tour a reconstructed replica of the fort.

Sixth CrossingSixth Crossing has two trail options: 6 miles and 10 miles.

Each is a loop beginning and ending at a campground.

View RidgeAt this point, you can see the original trail. To the east, the

trail leads to where express riders discovered the Willie

handcart company; to the west, the trail leads to the Sixth

Crossing of the Sweetwater River.

Linford MonumentThis monument is placed on the original trail to honor the

nine people who perished at Sixth Crossing.

Men’s Callout and Women’s PullThis experience usually occurs on a hill. The men’s call-

out separates the young men from the young women. A

priesthood leader explains that during the early days of the

Church, fathers, brothers, and sons were often called to

serve missions or colonize the territory, and in the case of

the handcart companies, many died on the trail. The women

were often left to fend for themselves. The women then pull

the handcarts up the hill without the men. You can conduct

this activity at different locations.

River CrossingsAt Martin’s Cove, the river crossing is a reverent reenactment

of the pioneers’ rescue across the Sweetwater River. Music

and stories can be shared on either bank.

Treks at Sixth Crossing can have up to three river crossings.

The first crossing is usually reverent, even though this Sweet-

water crossing was not a rescue crossing. Music and stories

can be shared on either bank. Some groups use the last

crossing as a fun water playtime at the end of the trek day.

Rocky RidgeThis difficult 14.5-mile trek begins at Sage Campground

and ends at Rock Creek Hollow. The first three miles are

extremely rocky and climb 600 feet. The Willie handcart

company crossed Rocky Ridge during a snowstorm, and

many pioneers considered this the most difficult stretch of

their journey. Because this trail is on government and private

lands, participants are not permitted to step off of the trail.

Rock Creek HollowThis area at the end of Rocky Ridge includes a memorial and

grave site for the members of the Willie handcart company

who lost their lives on this stretch of the trail.

Evening ActivitiesEvening activities are under the direction of ward or stake

leaders, although missionaries may help upon request. Ac-

tivities can include square dancing, pioneer express (delivery

of letters from home), stories (for example, about Ephraim

Hanks or Levi Savage), skits, plays, games, or testimony

meetings, which can be done in the campground or at an

available amphitheater. If the group desires to square dance

or needs an amphitheater, please reserve your location by

calling the site office. (Note: Square dancing is not allowed

at Sage Campground because of space limitations or at Rock

Creek Hollow because of its reverent location.)
