SPLASH Swim Neptune Championship Meet Recap

Summer swimming success for Swim Neptune started the first weekend of July at the Arizona Regional Championships in Kingman, AZ. Swim Neptune won the meet and had several new first time State Championship Qualifiers.

The following weekend Swim Neptune sent their largest team of 21 swimmers to the Arizona Senior State Championship, the championship meet for swimmers age 15 & Over.

In late July, Swim Neptune won the 2012 Long Course Arizona Age Group State Championship for the third consecutive time. Swim Neptune won by their largest margin ever, over 900 points ahead of the second place team. Swim Neptune had over 100 swimmers qualify in individual events, many of them Village members, making it the largest team participating in this year’s State Championship

Next up on the Championship agenda was the AAU Junior Olympic Meet in Houston, TX. Swim Neptune was represented by just 11 swimmers yet placed 6th overall! Zack Paliscak, son of DC Ranch Village members, set four Junior Olympic Records alone. Swimmer to swimmer, Swim Neptune far outswam the other participating teams—some with over 150 swimmers! Swim Neptune finished with 76 medals between the 11 swimmers!

Meanwhile nine Swim Neptune senior swimmers were in Mt. Hood, OR at the Speedo Championship Series Meet. This meet is recognized as one of the most competitive sectional level meets in the country.

The whirlwind of Championship meets concluded with the Far Western Championship meet in San Jose, CA. Swim Neptune had 23 athletes at this meet, billed as the largest age group swim meet in the country. The 11 – 12 Boys relay provided some of the meets’ highlights with the Swim Neptune team winning all four relay events in that age group and setting Arizona state records in three of the four events.

sayHELLOALEXISMARSH

New Pilates instructor at CamelbackAlexis Marsh comes to Pilates and per-sonal training with a love of movement and expression. Since she was a child, Alexis has always enjoyed dancing and the performing arts. Alexis studied ballet, lyrical, jazz, hip-hop and musical theater for over twenty years. She was awarded the American Academy of Ballet’s Silver Medal two consecutive years and was a featured

dancer for the School of the Garden State Ballet.

When her passion for dance led to an injury, Alexis looked to Pilates to help her recover and keep her

“dancer’s body” while finally having the benefit of a pain-free movement experience. After years of experience with mat Pilates, Alexis became Power Pilates mat certified in April 2008. She discovered the joy of teaching and sharing her practice with others and pursued the Power Pilates Comprehensive Training. As of January 2012, Alexis has been accepted into the prestigious

Power Pilates Teacher Trainer Program where she will learn how to educate other individuals on becoming Pilates instructors themselves. Alexis draws on her personal experiences to deepen her teaching practice and she uses a keen eye for body alignment to help her clients achieve their optimal results.

Alexis specializes in special cases, including clients with pre-existing injuries, movement restrictions, pre- and post-natal, weight loss and management, and clients with an advanced age looking for a safe and effective work out. Alexis has worked with wheelchair-bound clients and is skilled at employing special modifications. She also has experience with elite athletes ranging from NFL- professional players to marathoners and triathletes looking to compliment their current training regimen, as well as golfers looking to increase their potential on the course.

HAVE YOU TRIED

COREALIGN?In April of 2010 the Pilates studio at Camelback Village invested in an entirely new system of movement. The system is called CoreAlign and we are the only studio in Phoenix that offers certified CoreAlign trainers and this machine. It was developed by physical therapist, Jona-thon Hoffman, while rehabilitating his clients. These cli-ents enjoyed the system and it’s benefits so much, they begged to continue after rehabilitation. The interesting thing about the system is the instant core contraction that occurs immediately upon stepping onto the moving carts, which glide freely in the base of the machine. The next noticeable surprise is the gluteal assistance necessary to provide stabilization upon performing the movements on CoreALign. Instantly the central nervous system awakens to this stimulation and begins to move more harmoniously.

Susan McCulloch is a PMA Certified Pilates Instructor, trained through PHI Pilates, STOTT Pilates and Physical Mind Institute. She has been teaching Pilates at the Village for eight years. She attends several continu-ing education workshops on all mind-body modalities, and enjoys CoreAlign as it helps her deal with her own personal structural issues she has been dealing with since childhood.

Come see Susan and experience her expertise in movement and alignment.

Individuals who are lured in by the sales pitch are asked to perform a simple task and then perform it a second time but holding or wearing the bracelet. Magically, the individual has improved strength, balance, etc.

To gain further insight into these power bracelets Porcari et al. (2011) did some research funded by American Council on Exercise. They put participants thru two trials of four tests. The trials were random double-blind so neither the participant nor the examiner knew if the power bracelet was being worn or if it was a plain (placebo) rubber bracelet. Half of the participants wore the placebo bracelet in the first trial and the other half wore the power bracelet. The four tests were for flexibility, balance, strength, and vertical jump. (Porcari et al., 2011)

The big question…were the power bracelets effective in providing better strength, balance, etc? No, they were not. The study by Porcari et al. (2011) showed that no matter if the participant wore the power bracelet on the first or second trial, the second trial showed improvement in the testing areas. Porcari et al. (2011) discusses these results and states that the second trial improvement is due to the body knowing what to expect. The body learned from the first test what is expected and now can improve it. It seems to be no different than if you asked your buddy to stand still and not be pulled off balance. The first time they will be knocked down while the second time they will not because they know what’s coming. So, do the power bracelets work? Science says no but you be the judge.

ReferencePorcari, J., Hazuga, R., Foster, C., Doberstein, S., Becker, J., Kline, D., Mickschl, T., & Dodge, C. (2011). Can the power balance bracelet improve balance, flexibility, strength, and power? Journal of Sports Science & Medicine 10, 230 – 231

POWERBRACELETSFACT or FICTION?

David Gervais, Athletic Director, Verrado Village

Sport & Health Club

We’ve all seen the multitude of rubber power bracelets in the malls and on TV but do they really work? The claims are increased power, strength, balance and more simply by wearing or even simply holding the “energized” rubber accessory.

Do you know someone who is a survivor of breast cancer surgery? Are they in need of getting their life back, getting active, and want to start feeling normal again? If so, there is a great program to help them get their life back, called Restorative Pilates, offered at the Gainey location, one of only a few locations in the Valley offering this program.

Restorative Pilates is designed to help breast cancer surgery survivors get back their mobility, endur-ance, strength and self confidence. Designed by Niece Pecenka, certified Pilates Instructor at Gainey Village and breast cancer exercise specialist. She designed the program in conjunction with the Pink Ribbon Program, created by Doreen Puglisi, MS, and wanted to help meet the goals of the breast cancer surgery survivor. Breast can-cer surgery survivors’ major areas of concern typically include body image, frozen shoulder, decreased range of motion, depression and anxiety. Restorative Pilates can help them in these areas.

Pilates requires mindful movement, connecting the mind, the breath and the body through movement with the assistance of springs and pulleys, and there-

fore is a perfect modality that supports the physical and emotional recovery from breast cancer surgery. The Pilates apparatus is extremely beneficial when it comes to restoring the body back to health. The Restorative Pilates program focuses on this movement, helping the survivor by promoting a healthy lifestyle and a positive body image.

Another important aspect of Restorative Pilates is the environment where the classes take place. The environment of the Pilates studio is safe. It is a small group. Most participants are going through a similar situation. There is a sense of unity. Lasting friendships evolve. If for some reason clients want to cry because they are sad, angry or laugh until they cry...they feel safe and confident to go for it and let it all out.

Restorative Pilates will help stretch and strengthen the shoulder, chest, back and abdominal muscles, allowing women to regain full range of motion to these areas affected by breast cancer surgery. In addition, the program will give the woman self confidence to start exercising again, ultimately to change the woman’s identification of herself from

‘patient’ back to person. With exercise, and specifically this program, survivors feel like they have direction and a starting point to get their ‘normal’ back.

Restorative Pilates trainers are also aware of not only the loss of strength and mobility of the effected area but are also educated on the effects of chemotherapy. Not surprisingly, the long term effects of chemother-

apy is mind-blowing. These long term effects can lead to loss of bone-density, lowered blood cell count, heart and lung problems, etc. All of these effects need to be taken into consideration when working with breast surgery survivors. It’s usually the effects of breast cancer that you can’t physi-cally see that trainers need to be most aware of.

Exercise however, is most likely the last thing a breast cancer survivor

wants to do, and in the past, that is exactly what doc-tors recommended to their patients, is to rest. Recently, studies indicate a link between moderate physical exercise and improved quality of life for all cancer survivors.

The post-rehabilitation classes are offered at Gainey Village and are open to all breast cancer survivors whether their surgery was eight weeks ago or ten years ago. The Restorative Pilates program will help restore vitality and movement in all levels of fitness regard-less of when their surgery took place.

If you or a loved one has been affected by breast cancer, Restorative Pilates can help restore beyond the physi-cal rehabilitation, it can truly change life in a positive way, instilling confidence and inspiring hope.

For more information, please contact Niece Pecenka, certified Pilates instructor at [email protected] or Gainey Village at 480.609.6979. Niece is one of only three instructors certified in the state for this program.

This program will give the woman self-confidence to start exercising again, ultimately to change the woman’s identification of herself from ‘patient’ back to person.◊

DOGA OneSundayafternooneachmonth,thebacklawnattheCamelbackVillagebecomesadogpark,whenweopenthebackgatesandwatchtheparadeofpoochesarrive.

First, we enjoy Yappy Hour; the parents socialize and sip beer and wine while the furry ones play and sample healthy treats from Puppy Belly Deli. When we hit the mats, it’s always surprising to see how the dogs calm down and get into the flow of stretching, massage and familiar yoga poses with their human friend.

By the time we get to savasana, there is an amazing calm amongst us, and a sense of bliss, having spent quality time with the one who gives us unconditional love and appreciation.

Each month we raise money for one of our local shelters such as Arizona Animal Welfare League, Halo and Arizona Small Dog Rescue by collecting a $5 donation at the gate. In September we will have our second raffle for an awesome Cruiser Bike! Last Spring, we raised over $1,000 to help local homeless dogs.

Often a guest speaker joins us to share information and answer questions about training, pet sitting services and cool pet products.

October is a favorite month when we have a costume contest, complete with a fashion show and fabulous prizes!

Don’t have a dog? Join us anyway! It’s a lot of fun to watch, and often times we have a few “loaner” dogs…we sometimes have pups from the shelter looking for a FUREVER home!

ABDOMINAL CRUNCH

It has been somewhat common knowledge over the past decade or more that when a person desires a six-pack look, the crunch, in all its various forms, is a key element in attaining that goal. The crunch is almost a fitness icon, stashed in the minds of many as wholesale exercise, likened to the jump rope for cardio and the bench press for strength. That being said, over the last decade there has been more and more negative feedback and criticism from exercise physiologists and strength and conditioning coaches alike, as to both the effectiveness of the abdominal crunch as well as its potentially harmful effects, both acute and long-term.

The first point to make when thinking of the abdominal crunch is its direct relation to effectively train the core musculature. The first area of concern when thinking of the core is the fact that it is system-atically designed to resist movement, and not create movement. The majority of the core musculature cannot be engaged or developed through movement, and this is exactly what the crunch, in all its forms, is doing. The core’s true design and function is to stiffen and brace the entire torso region, both front and back like a girdle would, which then allows force and power to be generated by our hips and shoulders and eventu-ally to our limbs themselves. This ends up decreasing load off of the spine and onto the muscles of the core.

By crunching, we are isolating only one area of the abdominal region, primarily the rectus abdominus, while the rest of the core is left unaffected. The core musculature is meant to fire in synergy with one another, making isolating one area of the core a poor choice in any format. This problem is compounded even more by the fact that the rectus abdominus has no indirect attachment to the spine, so its impact towards the core’s primary duty of taking load off the spine is minimal. Core muscles such as the transverse abdominus (the layer under the six-pack), multifidi (muscle in between each spinal column) and internal oblique (deep side layer), illustrate an indirect attach-ment to the spine itself through the thoraco-lumbar fascia, allowing them to have a much more influential impact towards both spinal stabilization and taking

load off of the spine altogether. None of these afore-mentioned muscles of the core are engaged to a large degree during a crunching motion.

Lastly, and most significantly when discussing the abdominal crunch, is its ability to be harmful or dangerous to those who use it. When we crunch repeatedly, we are putting repetitive flexion into the spine. This is of concern because this mechanism of repeated spinal flexion is the same mechanism that creates a bulging or herniated disk. The inter-vertebral fluid in between each disk that lines our vertebral column is similar to the tread on the tires of our car in that once that fluid is worn down or injured, you cannot get it back. Problem is, there is no store to shop at for a new spine. Now keep in mind that we started

off by saying “repetitive” flexion, and this does not mean that some flexion is not beneficial, because it is, and has been shown to bring nutrients into these inter-vertebral disks. The take-home message with all of this is that when training the core, you want to primarily use exercises that force the core to stiffen and brace and subsequently resist movement. Some examples you can use are various plank positions, kneeling chops and lifts, or barbell landmines, just to name a few. Along with this, never attempt to isolate the core, since its primary job is to work in an inte-grated fashion when being engaged. Lastly, movement of the spine, and in the crunch’s case, repeating flexion of the spine, not only creates no athleticism of the core itself, but fails to address the majority of the core’s musculature, particularly those muscles which have an indirect attachment to the spine itself.

THE DEATH OF THE

When training the core, primarily use exercises that force the core to stiffen and brace and resist movement.

HEALTHD • CPR Training Would you know what to do in case of an emergency? Each year, at least 250,000 people die of sudden cardiac arrest in the United States. It can happen to anyone, at any time and not just to adults. CPR, if started promptly, can help by keeping blood containing oxygen to the brain and other vital organs. However, CPR by itself is not sufficient to correct the underlying problem. AED’s (Automated External Defibrillators) provide an electric shock that can help the heart to reestablish an effective rhythm. The Village at DC Ranch offers CPR/AED classes every month. For more information or to sign up, contact Jim Franklin at 480.502.8844, or [email protected]. Class fee: $25. The next three classes are:
