The North Dakota Stockmen’s Foundation is painting a October. Nearly $155,000 in direct aid is helping impacted producers get their feet back on the ground. The NDSF helped restore the beauty of the Stockmen’s Asso- ciation headquarters through an exterior renovation project. The building serves as the business center for North Dakota’s live- stock industry and as a museum honoring people who have made their mark on it. The NDSF also established a research fund in 2013. The goal is to someday be able to provide financial support to encourage innovation in the beef industry. These efforts would not be possible without the generous support of people from across all spectrums of the beef industry. Thanks to those who supported the NDSF through its Rifle Raffle, Wine Auction, Ranch Rodeo and Stockmen’s Ball fundraisers, memorials and other gifts. Major sponsors included Dakota Community Bank & Trust; Jamestown Implement; Kelley’s McDonald’s; Farm & Ranch Guide; Kupper Chevrolet; Stockmen’s Livestock Exchange; Pahlke Steel, Inc.; Advanced Agri-Direct; Denny’s Electric & Motor Repair; and Gate City Bank of Dickinson.

The NDSF raised nearly $58,000 in a night of western elegance at the 2013 Stockmen’s Ball on Dec. 14.

The night began with a social and cowboy music by NDSA mem-bers Casey Fredericks and Beni Paul-son. Radio personality and Rhame-area rancher Scott Bachmeier served as the Ball emcee. He led a program honoring those who helped pave the way for today’s beef industry and whose loved ones honored their memory with a commemorative photo in the NDSA’s Memorial Hall.

The 2010 World Champion Livestock Auctioneer Kyle Shobe called a lively fundraiser auction with lots ranging from handcrafted western furniture to original artwork created to benefit the NDSF’s Aid for Atlas Disaster Relief effort.

The Ball also included the Foundation’s inaugural Stick Horse Futurity, where guests had a chance to be a racehorse owner and support the NDSF’s charitable objectives. Renee Erickson of Dickinson jockeyed for her and her husband, Koester Red Angus and Leland Red Angus and won by a nose in a spirited race.

There was also some friendly competition among the bidders in the silent auction, which featured 71 unique items.

After supper, Shobe turned his chants into melodies as he and the rest of his band, The Walk ‘Em Boys, took the stage.

then donated this Travis Klath origi-nal back to the NDSA.

The 2013 NDSF scholarship recipients included (L to R) Jacob Lardy, Mariah Brooks, Justin Bartholomay, Mariah Jacobs, Taylor Friesz and (not pictured) Renae Tokach.

NDSF awards six scholarships, establishes Endowment Scholarship

The NDSF presented six college scholarships to young leaders during the Stockmen’s Association’s 84th Annual Convention in September.

The NDSF awarded its two $500 Junior Scholarships to Taylor Friesz of New Salem and Mariah Jacobs of Noonan and four $500 Leg-acy Scholarships to Justin Bartholo-may of Sheldon, Mariah Brooks of Bowman, Jacob Lardy of West Fargo and Renae Tokach of St. Anthony.

Friesz is majoring in ag busi-ness and ag education/extension at North Dakota State University (NDSU). Upon graduation, Friesz plans on finding a career close to home and eventually taking over his family’s third-generation Hereford operation.

Jacobs is majoring in animal science and pre-veterinary medicine at NDSU. She plans on attending vet school and returning home to practice small- and large-animal medicine.

Bartholomay is majoring in animal science and minoring in agri-business and extension/education at NDSU. After graduation, he plans on acquiring a job with a beef repro-duction company while taking over

his family’s cow-calf operation and adding a registered cattle enterprise to the ranch.

Brooks is pursuing a degree in animal science with a pre-vet em-phasis at NDSU. Her goal is to have a solo- or multi-vet large-animal veterinary practice in North Dakota.

Lardy is studying range science at NDSU. He plans on obtaining a master’s degree and moving to western North Dakota to work as a reclamation specialist to restore grazing lands post oil development.

Tokach is studying for a career

in animal science and agriculture communications at Kansas State University. She hopes to work for an ag organization or business.

The NDSF will be offering these scholarships again in 2014, plus the new NDSF Endowment Scholarship, thanks to the generos-ity of Wade and Lynn Moser of Bis-marck. The Endowment Scholarship is available to high-school seniors, college freshmen, college sopho-mores or college juniors who are or will be studying a beef-related major at any accredited North Dakota col-lege or university.

Ranch rodeo benefits FoundationA team representing Dokken Construction edged out 13

competitors and claimed championship buckles and bragging rights in the 2013 NDSF Ranch Rodeo hosted by the Antler Out-laws in Antler on June 16. The biggest winner, though: the NDSF, which was granted the proceeds of the event to provide disaster assistance to producers in need.

The first-place team included (L to R) Jeff Kuntz, Tony Best, Jason Zahn and Neil Schell, all of Towner. The photos are by About You Photography.

How you can help paint abright future for the beef industry

If you want to add a coat of brilliance and color to the beef industry and ensure a vibrant future for generations to come, consider a gift to the NDSF. Because the NDSF is a 501(c)3, most gifts are tax-deductible. Here are some ways to help:

Memorials & Honorary TributesYou can recognize a living or deceased loved one with

a memorial or tribute gift. Contributions in any amount are accepted and appreciated. Contributions of $1,000 or more will be recognized with a photo in the Memorial Hall, a listing on the NDSF’s website and a story in the North Dakota Stockman magazine.

Cash DonationsYou may contribute to the NDSF’s scholarship, build-

ing, research, disaster or general funds.

FundraisersThe NDSF holds a variety of fundraisers every year.

In 2014, a Rifle Raffle and Brand-the-Building Auction are being planned to be held during the Stockmen’s Associa-tion’s 85th Annual Convention.

Other GiftsGifts of stock, life insurance policies, real estate, over-

stocked inventories and other items may fit your needs.

North Dakota IncentivesThe State of North Dakota provides additional tax

credit incentives for those who give specific types of gifts to qualifying charities. The credit may be carried forward for three tax years if it can’t all be used in one year.

Individuals may make a qualified deferred gift to a qualified North Dakota non-profit organization. The tax credit is 40 percent of the charitable deduction allowed by the Internal Revenue Service (IRS), up to a maximum of $10,000 per year per taxpayer or $20,000 per year per couple filing jointly.

Businesses that pay North Dakota income tax may take a 40 percent credit up to $10,000 for gifts to the en-dowment fund of a qualified North Dakota charity. The NDSF has an Endowment Scholarship Fund. Individuals may receive a state tax credit for a contribution of $5,000 or more to a qualified North Dakota endowment. The tax credit is 40 percent of the charitable deduction allowed by the IRS, up to a maximum credit of $10,000 per year per taxpayer or $20,000 per year per taxpayer per couple filing jointly.

NDSF supports livestockproducers in time of need

The NDSF will be distributing nearly $155,000 in relief to livestock producers who suffered catastrophic losses in winter storm Atlas. The infamous storm ravaged southwestern North Dakota and western South Dakota Oct. 4-5, 2013, claiming the lives of tens of thousands of cattle, sheep and horses in the region.

The NDSF coordinated the grassroots disaster relief effort, pooling its dollars with those of the North Dakota Stockmen’s Association and many generous donors from across the country, to bring relief to ranchers whose lives were turned upside down following the storm.

It administered its own application and nomination program for North Dakota producers who were

impacted. Recipients were chosen by a special NDSF selection committee.

The NDSF also contributed funds to the South Dakota Ranchers Relief Fund to assist neighboring South Dakota producers who were impacted.

It also helped connect those who wanted to help with other, non-monetary gifts to those who were in need.

“Atlas took a toll on many ranchers this year,” said Towner-area cattleman and NDSF President Jason Zahn. “The disaster relief applications were filled with stories of tragedy and triumph, and we are proud to be able to help our friends and neighbors recoup following this

disaster.” He expressed his gratitude

to all those who contributed to the

NDSF’s Aid for Atlas Disaster Relief Fund – from individual ranchers and businesses to civic organizations, 4-H clubs, breed associations and church groups.

“I know that the financial and moral support, thoughts and prayers meant the world to these families and helped bring them hope in a time of despair,” Zahn said.

Federal livestock disaster assistance

programs were renewed in the 2014 farm bill. Farm Service

Agency is expected to begin accepting

Livestock Indemnity Program

applications inApril 2014.
