◆ 1.6 billion people say that they are Muslims; that’s about every fourth person who lives on this earth.

◆ More than half of them live in Asia, 20% in the Middle East and North Africa and only very few in Europe or North and South America.

Dear praying friends, children and parents

Last year, just when the prayer booklet was almost ready, Ron, the man who had worked hard to make the booklet, suddenly died. But before he died, he had already started to work on the prayer booklet that you are reading now.

Ron really loved Muslims and he wanted that Christians would also love them and continue to pray for them, so he asked David Garrison, who has written a book about Muslims, if he could use parts of his book. Now you and your parents can learn from this book which is called A wind in the House of Islam. During the month of prayer you will learn more about the different rooms that are in this special house.

Many wonderful things have happened in the past 20 years through kids and adults like you who prayed for Muslims.

When we pray during Ramadan for Muslims we will be praying with them. When we pray that they will get to know God better, we also will learn new things from God. God loves Muslims and in prayer we will be able to love them too, which is much better than being afraid of them.

But this is not only a time to pray, it is also a good time to talk to our Muslim friends and to talk with Christians who have not yet started to pray for Muslims. We can share the wonderful things that have happened and encourage them to pray too.

There are many people all around the world who have worked on the booklet and we want to say thank you to them too. Please do pray for them as well.

Daoud is a follower of Jesus in Afghanistan. He knows that this is dangerous. So when Ahmad found his mobile number and started to call him day and night asking for a New Testament he was scared. Was Ahmad

really wanting to become a follower of Jesus? Daoud decided to meet Ahmad to give him the New

Testament he wanted. Ahmad was so happy that he told Daoud his story.

Ahmad had really wanted to know about Jesus, but nobody he knew could help him. He saved money to buy an old computer and an Internet connection and started to look for other believers in Afghanistan. That’s how he had found Daoud. Now Ahmad is happy and shares everything he is learning about Jesus with his family and many others.

One person in the family can hide a New Testament or a Bible, then all the others have to search for it. When you have found it you can pray that the people in Afghanistan who search for a Bible will find one.

In the same way as the kitchen and the bedroom look different and are used for different purposes, so are the different countries where Muslims live. Today we want to understand that and pray for the different regions (or

Rooms) in the House. Muslims in West Africa, Bangladesh or Iran are very different from each other — the way they live together, their cultures and the way they see their everyday life.

As you pray for the different ‘Rooms’, you can wander throughout your house or apartment and pray for one of the different regions in every room. Don’t forget the kitchen and the bathroom!

At the University of Dhaka students can study World Religions and Culture. About 300 students are taking this subject. But it’s not only professors who are teaching these classes: they also invite believers from the different

religions being studied to come and teach. Every year some Christians from Bangladesh can come and share about Jesus with the students and read portions of the Bible with them.

West Africa has always been a region with many riches. In the old times it was rich with ivory and gold and today it is diamonds and oil. Many of the countries and regions where Christians live have become

wealthier. In the North, where mainly Muslims live, the Sahara Desert is growing and the people are becoming poorer. Many Muslim groups have started to fight against the Christians. One of these groups is called Boko Haram and they are making life very difficult for Christians in Nigeria.

Do you have something of value — a gold ring or a bracelet or a precious stone? Get it for your prayer today. One of you can hold it as you pray, and then pass it on to the next person, who then prays.

◆ One of the oceans is the Atlantic Ocean to the left of West Africa.

◆ The other ocean is the Sahara Desert in the North. Camels who were used to cross the Sahara were called ‘ships of the desert’.

Do you like to play in the sand? When I was a child I loved to do it. North Mali is like a very big sandpit and its part of the southern Sahara.

Almost all the people who live there are Muslims,;there are only a very few Christians. Recently the New Testament was translated into Tamasheq and Songhai, so people can now read the Word of God in their languages. There are a couple of problems, though: very few people want to go as missionaries to these places because of fighting, and those who have become Christians are afraid to tell others about Jesus because they are afraid that their families would kick them out of the house. Who will go?

Today you can pretend to ride to the Tuareg. Each of you can take a chair, sit on it as on a camel in one line like a camel caravan; and while you are “riding” you can pray.

The Tuaregs ride on camels. Here are some, but only two camels are exactly the same. Find out which ones.

◆ The Tuareg who ride on their camels through the Sahara live in north Mali.

Rafiq is a Berber but he has left his own country and gone to Europe to earn more money. He is a very good musician and somebody asked him to write a musical. Rafiq chose to write it about Jesus and started to study

the Gospels. Rafiq started to change and his friends got really worried that Rafiq would spend too much time with Jesus, but it was too late! Rafiq had decided to become a follower of Jesus.

When he went home to visit his family in North Africa he found that many of his Berber friends had also become Jesus followers. One of them said: we have just started to be like our great-great grandparents again — we are like Augustine, we just returned to their faith.

Can you sing a song about Jesus together like Rafiq, who wrote songs about Jesus? Half of the family can sing while the others are praying, then you can change.

◆ Most of the people who live in North Africa are called Berbers.

◆ They have lived there for many centuries, mostly in the mountains.

◆ About 1,500 years ago, the Berbers were Christians. One Christian leader from that time was called Augustine.

How many children are in your class at school? Do you have chairs and tables to sit and work at? Musa is in Year 1 and he shares a classroom with 210 other children and one teacher. They have to sit on the floor. Very often

the teacher does not even come, and if he is there the children memorise their lessons without really learning much because they don’t really understand the French language that he uses.

Musa’s cousin Abdallah lives in a different village. Abdallah’s father wanted a better education for his children, so he asked a Christian teacher to come and teach his children and some neighbours too. Abdallah absolutely loves to go to school: he learns many things and he also loves the Bible stories his teacher tells him.

Can you read the following verse in French? Try to read it, or check out the answer page on page 32.

Elias was a missionary in East Africa and lived in a refugee camp for Somali refugees. There was not much space for the people who lived there. One evening somebody knocked at his door. Elias was afraid that it might be

a terrorist come to harm him. But instead it was an old man named Abdul-Ahad. He very much wanted to know if God really did forgive all sins, because he had done some terrible things and wanted to be free of them. When Elias told him that Jesus did forgive all sins, Abdul-Ahad started to weep. Together with Elias he prayed and was saved. He said to Elias: don’t be afraid of Muslims, we need Jesus very much. Elias says that he has never forgotten that.

East African Muslims are dressed with special hats for men and shawls to cover the head for women. Get some head coverings and when you all have your heads covered like Somalis you can pray for them.

◆ In Somalia and other East African countries many people are Muslims.

◆ In East Africa Muslims and Christians have been fighting with each other for many years.

In the Bible Jesus talks often about sheep and shepherds, and He tells us that He is our Good Shepherd. The Orma and Wardei are shepherds. The boys have to look after the sheep and goats and the men care for the cows. In the

evenings they all come back to the villages with their animals, the children will sing and everyone is happy to see the animals come home. The shepherds know their animals and if one is missing the shepherd will go back to search for it till he has found it. Doesn’t that sound a lot like what Jesus said? Only neither the Orma nor the Wardei know about Jesus. Today we will pray for them.

Can you draw sheep, goats or cows? Draw one for every family member and write Orma and Wardei on it. Cut them out and each of you can keep one in your pocket and remember to pray throughout the day.

For some families the kitchen is the main room of the house where everyone meets, for others it’s the living room. The Arab world is like that main, central room in the House of Islam. It is in this region where people first

became Muslims. Mahad is a Muslim man who lives in this region. He was very

sick and needed heart surgery. He was very much afraid, but just before the start of the surgery he cried, “Jesus” three times. During the surgery Jesus appeared to him and gave him peace. Since that day Mahad has told many people about Jesus and now leads a secret Bible study.

It is secret; nobody can know that we pray! So, today we will hide under the table and whisper our prayers.

◆ The Arab world consists of 22 countries.

◆ Arabic is the fourth biggest language group.

◆ There are many TV and radio programmes for Arab Muslims to learn about Jesus.

Bolos is an Egyptian Christian who leads an organisation that helps others. He says: Christians in Egypt are full of joy and love for others, but many are also afraid that they will be punished because they have changed from

being Muslims to being Christians. And yet because they show so much love to others, many families have started to believe in Jesus.

Christians in Egypt also help the poor and give medical help to those who are sick. Through all that, says Bolos, we hope that many more Egyptians will start to follow Jesus.

Before you pray, talk together about how you could show love to a neighbour — perhaps through visiting somebody who is lonely, taking some food or flowers … Pray and act!

Egypt is known for its pyramids, and the Christians for love. How many pyramids can you find?

About 40 years ago there was a revolution in Iran. The Shah of Persia, who was like a king in Iran, was overthrown and had to flee the country. Muslim leaders called the Ayatollahs took over the rule in Iran. They are

very strict Muslims and tell everyone what to believe, how to dress and how to behave. Many people have fled Iran. Since then many who stayed have become followers of Jesus because they do not like the Islam that the Ayatollahs want them to follow.

About 1 million New Testaments in Farsi have been distributed and many Iranians listen to gospel programmes on TV and radio.

Because many in Iran have become refugees and have had to leave their country, today you can wander around while you pray. You could also go for a little prayer walk outside.

◆ About 77 million people live in Iran.

The people who speak Uzbek in Kyrgyzstan live in a place called Fergana Valley. The valley is very good for agriculture, things grow well there and so many people live in the valley. The Kyrgyz people don’t like the

Uzbek-speaking people and have been fighting them. Almost all the Uzbek speakers are Muslims, but many want to

know more about God. Nadim is one of them. He had really bad dreams for a long time and only when he met Christians who prayed for him did the bad dreams stop. Now Nadim and his whole family have started to read the New Testament to know more about God and His Word.

Some of you are the Uzbek speakers, some are Christians. The “Uzbek speakers” can lie on the floor; the Christians can pray that they find Jesus. Then the “Uzbek speakers” can pray for the Uzbeks in Kyrgyzstan.

The Turkic people are Muslims, but something exciting is happening! During the Second World War many Germans who lived in the Soviet Union were sent to live in Central Asia among the Turkic people. The Germans

were Christians and through the way they lived together they showed the people around them something about the gospel. About 40 years ago it became possible to share the gospel with the Muslims who lived in Central Asia.

Some years ago I was able to go to one of the countries, and I met pastors and church members who were Turkic people and who used to be Muslims. I was so happy because I had prayed for the Turkic people many years before, and here was the result.

Not many years after the Olympic Games in 1992 a really bad war started in Yugoslavia, where suddenly people of different religions started to fight against each other. The Christians started to fight against the Muslims and

the other way around. Many really bad things happened and many people died. The Christians had forgotten that the Bible tells us to love our enemies.

There are still marks to be seen on the houses in Sarajevo that show where bullets hit; today it is still difficult to tell a Muslim in Bosnia about Jesus. But the Muslims in Bosnia need to hear about the Jesus who loves and cares for them.

Write on a big piece of paper: LOVE YOUR ENEMIES. Colour it nicely so that you have a beautiful wall decoration that will remind you to pray for Bosnia.

For most of the tribal groups in Western South Asia women have no value. Ahmed, a follower of Jesus who was a Muslim before, said: Women were like shoes for us. If they are old you get a pair of new ones, we did the same with

our wives.But after two American women went to that area to teach

a seminar for women things changed. Even though it was for women, the men decided to go and leave their wives at home. At the seminar they heard for the first time that the Bible says to love and care for your wife. The men could not sleep after such a message and the next morning they decided to change. Today there are many jamaats (churches) for the women in that area.

Today it’s the men’s turn to pray. The men and boys in the family can pray for more movements among women first, then all can hold hands and pray together.

God made men and women. Find out how He made us: replace each number with the corresponding letter (where A=1, B=2, etc).

The people who are now Shaik Muslims used to be Hindus many, many years ago. They became Muslims when Muslim missionaries came to them.

The Shaik Muslims are a bit different in the way they worship Allah and they love to go to the graves of Muslim saints — people who used to be good teachers or did special things. These graves are very richly decorated and people who visit them will sing and play music there. Many of these people cannot read or write but they love a good story.

One of you is the storyteller: they will tell the rest of you about the Marathi Shaiks and share the prayer requests with you. The storyteller can dress up with a turban or special coat.

◆ Marathi is a language in India spoken in the state of Maharashtra in the west of India.

◆ Many Shaik Muslims also live in Pakistan and Bangladesh.

◆ Many Shaik Muslims work on farms as labourers.

Over 200 years ago a missionary named William Carey landed in Calcutta, the capital of the Indian state of West Bengal. He immediately started to translate the Bible into the Bengali language because he knew how

important it was for people to have the Bible in their own language. But William Carey had to choose if he wanted to reach Hindus or Muslims. He chose the Hindus and used the word Ishwar for God. The Muslims thought that this was not for them! Later people made a translation for Muslims and used the word Khuda, but the Bangladeshis did not like that word either. Today the word Allah is used in the Bible for the Muslims of Eastern South Asia.

Kanpur is an important city with a lot of industry, which is why it is called the “Manchester of the East” after a famous city in Great Britain.

Again and again there has been fighting in Kanpur, sometimes between the British people who ruled in India till about 70 years ago and the Indians, sometimes between Muslims and Hindus. Many people have died in those fights, even children. So we need to pray for peace in Kanpur.

The people in Kanpur need peace. Muslims greet each other with “As-salaam alayekum.” and answer with “Wa alaykum as-salaam.” These mean “Peace be with you.” and “And peace to you too.” Can you say that to each other before and after prayer?

◆ Kanpur is a city in north India with four million inhabitants. That’s as many people as live in Norway!

◆ Most people in Kanpur are Hindus, but about 20 per cent are Muslims. That means one out of every five people is a Muslim.

Indonesia is a special country. For many years missionaries from the Netherlands shared the gospel with the Muslims there but only a few accepted Jesus. But that all changed when Sadrach Surapranata, who used to be a Muslim,

became a follower of Jesus and shared the gospel with others. He lived from 1835–1924 and in this time more than 10,000 Indonesians became Christians.

In 1965 something really terrible happened in Indonesia and many people were killed by Islamic forces — men, women and children alike. Because of that many people did not want to be Muslims any more and over two million Indonesians became Christians.

Even today more and more Muslims are coming to Jesus in this region.

Many people in this Room live on islands. Each of you is to be an island. Stand as far apart in the room as you can. One of you starts to pray, then they “row” to the next island, clap that person’s hand and that person prays, and so on ...

The Pattani Malay are very skilled craftsmen: they don’t go fishing in plain boats, they decorate them richly with patterns and pictures. They live very far away from the capital of Thailand and they are very independent and

live their own lives in their families and their villages. Many of them are very poor.

Like everywhere, Pattani young people like to watch TV and films, which are influencing them and changing the way they live because they like what they see in the films and want to be like the film stars. Some young people have become addicted to drugs.

Today you can make a decoration to remind you to pray for the Pattani Malay. Cut out fish and fruits from some thick paper, decorate them like the boats of the Pattani, then put them all on a string to make a garland.

◆ About 3.5 million Pattani Malays live in southern Thailand.

◆ They speak their own language, which is similar to the one in Malaysia.

◆ Many of them are fishermen or farmers.

Jesus followers who come from Muslim backgrounds have been asked what helped them to believe in Jesus. They talked about “bridges” that helped them. Here are the first five:

1 Faith — Missionaries have gone to share the gospel with Muslims but have never seen many Muslims believe. Today it is happening.

2 Prayer — You and your family are part of it. Because so many people all around the world pray every year, Muslims start to believe in Jesus.

3 Scripture — When people can read the Bible in their own language they will understand better. Many Bibles have been translated in the past 30 years.

4 The Holy Spirit — Many Muslims have had dreams, visions, answered prayers and divine encounters.

5 Faithful Christians — Many Christians have shared the love of God with Muslims all over the world.

Who is the strongest in your family? He can build a bridge with his body and the smallest can walk over the bridge and pray for the five bridges — the others will help!

◆ A bridge is normally something we use to cross over a river or a valley.

◆ We can talk about bridges between people if we find something that helps us to come together and to understand each other better.

What do you normally do throughout a day? Do you go to school, play with your friends, and eat a good meal that your mother or father cooked?

Many Syrian children who have become refugees cannot do what a normal child does. Many had to leave everything behind when they had to flee for their lives. Many children lost relatives and many now live in tents, even tents made from plastic. Some children have to work because there is no father who can work; many are not in school. Some Christians have started schools for those children so they will not miss out on their education. One child who can go to such a school recently prayed: “Dear God, please help us that our school doesn’t close down. Our school is like our second home and I love it a lot. If it closes down it is impossible for me to join another one.”

Get your school books, some food and clean water and put them on the table. These are all things that refugees need. Hold the different items while you pray for the refugees.

◆ The war in Syria started in March 2011.

◆ About one million of all the refugees from Syria are children.

◆ Many of the refugees live in Jordan, Lebanon or Turkey.

Remember the first five bridges (Day 23) and that they are ways that Muslims learned about God and His Word.

The next five are:

6 Learning from each other — Christians are learning from followers of Jesus who were Muslims and are applying what they learn in other regions of the world.

7 Communication — Many Muslims have the opportunity to hear about the Good News through TV, radio or the Internet.

8 Discovery — The Bible says: “Taste and see that the Lord is good.” (Psalm 34.8) Through dreams and visions and also through Bible study, Muslims discover that God is good.

9 Islam itself — If Muslims can read the Qur’an in their own language they discover that God speaks to them through it. Many are also fed up with all the bad things some Muslims do and don’t want to be Muslims anymore.

10 Indigenisation — A difficult word that means “it comes from within”. That’s when Muslims become Jesus followers and then share with other Muslims.

Make a drawing of a bridge and write all the ten bridges into the bridge. You can hang the bridge on your fridge or noticeboard.

◆ There are not just five bridges that help Muslims to know Jesus, but ten.

◆ Some of these bridges are very special.

The prophet Muhammad sometimes went to a cave that was called Hira. He went there to think about problems around him and how he could solve them. One day the angel Gabriel, who is called Jibril in Arabic, met him

there. The angel told Muhammad to read, but Muhammad said that he could not read. Then Gabriel gave him the first verse of the Qur’an. Muhammad quickly ran home to tell his wife, who encouraged him and together with a cousin they told Muhammad that he was chosen by God to call the people to worship God and to lead a righteous life.

Can you make a cave with some sheets and the dining table? You can sit in the cave to pray.

One of the Syrian refugees living in Jordan is an old woman. Her name is Umm Bader. Some of her children have died in the war, some are still in Syria. Umm Bader knows that Jesus answers prayers: she has experienced

it many times. One night Umm Bader woke up because a man called Isa came to her house to give her some money. Umm Bader thought that it was a man from her church, but there was nobody who was called Isa. She understood that it was Isa al-Maseeh — Jesus Himself — who had visited her that night. At the same time as Isa visited Umm Bader, her grandson was released from some people who were trying to kill him. Umm Bader knows that Jesus is real.

Get your Bibles. Who can find Matthew 17:20 first and read it to the others? That’s the faith we need to believe in miracles for the refugees.

There are five barriers that hinder Muslims from getting to know Jesus. We have to move them out of the way:

1 Infighting — Christians who fight with each other.

2 Fear and hatred — Many Christians are afraid of Islam and don’t see that Muslim people also need Jesus.

3 Imitating Islam — Sometimes the way we are as Christians is very similar to the way Islam is, and Muslims are not attracted to the churches. We have to be like Jesus.

4 Injustice — If we allow injustice to happen then Muslims will not want to follow Jesus with us.

5 Ignorance — When we think that it is not our problem, that somebody else can solve it.

We want to move the barriers out of the way. You can all push against a wall in your home as if it was a barrier that you want to remove and then pray together.

◆ Barriers are the opposite of bridges — they stop people from getting to each other.

◆ Sometimes Christians who say they believe in Jesus and the Bible fight each other.

Normally Namumba are Muslims, but Abdallah is a Christian. He has an amazing story to share. Abdallah had occasionally seen a very pure light. One night in his dream he saw the light over his daughter and

shortly after that his daughter was invited by a pastor to go to his school. Abdallah agreed and he wanted to know what his daughter learned during the devotions in school. Abdallah was really sick but one day the headmistress of the school prayed for all the sick relatives of the children. Abdallah was healed and because of that he and his daughter started to trust Jesus.

Do you have some candles in the house? Get them and every time somebody prays you can light a candle.

Christians are to be light for others. In this word puzzle you can find eight things that have to do with light.

Here are five steps by which you can continue to help:

1 Continue to pray for Muslims, even if it is not Ramadan.

2 Pray for the missionaries and the ministries that are reaching Muslims. Maybe you can even give from your pocket money to them.

3 Ask God if he wants you or your whole family to become missionaries for Muslims.

4 Do you know a Muslim in your neighbourhood or your school? Talk with him, show love to him. Maybe they have experienced bad things before they came to your country.

5 Talk about Jesus and the Good News with Muslims.

Take some paper and pencil and write down how you will continue to pray and reach out to Muslims as a family.
