Operating DosFax LITE andWinFax LITE at the Same Time

WinFax LITE is the Windows version of DosFax LITE. Bothproducts look and work very much alike. In fact, they can sharethe same logs and phonebook on systems where both programsexist. Nevertheless, their operating environments-DOS andWindows, respectively-are very different. As such, you shouldonly attempt to operate in each environment with the productdesigned for that environment. For example, it is not recom-mended you use DosFax LITE for sending or receiving faxes inthe DOS window in Windows; use only WinFax LITE whenworking in Windows.

Note: If you use WinFax LITE and DosFax LITE together, do notload the WinFax (receive in DOS) TSR. The DosFax LITECommunication TSR, when loaded, will perform the re-ceive function in DOS. When you enter Windows, theDosFax LITE Communication TSR is temporarily dis-abled and will re-enable automatically when you exitWindows.

Generate a fax of the document you are working on in yourcurrent DOS application such as word processing, desktoppublishing, forms, spreadsheet or database. Add a cover page,if desired, before sending.

DosFax LITE’s Capture (print) and Communication (send/re-ceive) TSRs fit seamlessly into your DOS environment andwork easily with all your DOS applications.

w Sending from DosFax LITE Administrator

Sending from DosFax LITE Administrator is best suited tosending brief fax messages “on the fly”. Type or insert a shorttext block into a predefined DosFax LITE fax cover page.

These two methods share the same basic procedure with someminor differences. The following chapters highlight thedifferences.

During an actual send or receive, transmission information dis-plays about the modem’s sending/receiving status; number ofthe page being transmitted; elapsed transmission time, in min-utes and seconds; and the other fax device’s station identification.

Logging Fax Events

The send and receive logs provide historical listings of previousfax events. The logs include successful events, cancelled eventsand those that failed due to conditions such as transmissionerrors, busy signals, or no reply.

Events are sorted according to the date and time they occurred, with the most recent events appended to the end of the list.Additional information at the bottom of both logs shows moredetails about your fax transmissions and receptions. In addition, you can resubmit faxes to be sent again, view sent or receivedfaxes and print log reports, among other activities. Refer to SendLog, page 5-18 and Receive Log, page 5-23 for further details.

Setting Up Your Phonebook

DosFax LITE Administrator lets you enter frequently used faxrecipients into an online fax directory, or phonebook. You can alsocombine a number of recipients in a phonebook into a singlegroup, or distribution list. This allows you to send-or broad-cast-a single fax to a group of recipients, rather than a separate

fax to each recipient. Refer to Phonebook, page 5-27, for informa-tion on this feature.

For example, if you send product bulletins to all your dealers anddistributors, you could create a phonebook group called “Prod-uct Bulletins”. You would then add the individual phonebookentries for each of your dealer and distributor companies to thisphonebook group. You would create your product bulletins in aDOS word processing or desktop publishing application and“print capture” them. When you go to send the bulletins usingDosFax LITE and you are asked to enter the fax destination, youwould choose the “Product Bulletins” group in the phonebook.DosFax LITE sends the fax to each member of the “ProductBulletins” group.

DosFax LITE User’s Guide A-1

Sending Faxes Solving Common Problems

Solution

Some applications contain special driver support when using amouse. DosFax LITE does not because it uses the mouse driverinstalled before running the application. You must, therefore, load either MOUSE.COM or MOUSE.SYS before startingDosFax LITE in order to use a mouse with DosFax LITE. See yourmouse documentation for information.

Situation

When attempting to use a hot key sequence to invoke a functionin DosFax LITE, a function from within the current DOS applica-tion is invoked instead.

Solution

The setup for DosFax LITE allows you to change the key se-quences for invoking TSR program operations. You should finda key sequence not used in any of your applications, and redefinethat particular sequence for the TSR program. Refer to Hot Keyson page 2-12.

Sending Faxes

Situation

DosFax LITE stops operating- or “hangs” -as you are starting to send a fax. The “initializing” message appears withinDosFax LITE Administrator’s Fax Event Status dialog box-butthen nothing else happens.

Solution

This situation arises due to a communication problem betweenyour DosFax LITE software and your fax/modem. Check thefollowing:

1. Ensure your fax/modem is connected to the serial port speci-fied for DosFax LITE when you installed it (for example, “COM1 - Modem Type: Class2”)

A-2 DosFax LITE User’s Guide

Solving Common Problems Sending Faxes

2. If your fax/modem appears to be connected to the specifiedport, you can further check the connection. At the DOS promptof the directory in which DosFax LITE resides, type . . .

MODEM

and then press ENTER. Select Unknown in the dialog box thatappears. DosFax LITE will test your COM ports to detect theport and type of fax/modem installed. The Checking Port andModem dialog box that appears displays important informa-tion about your fax/modem. If the fax/modem located iscompatible, select Continue to initialize and set up yourfax/modem for DosFax LITE. If not, record the displayedinformation and contact your fax/modem manufacturer.

Situation

You receive “No carrier” messages and are unable to send faxesto international destinations.

Solution

Increasing the value of the wait time for carrier/dial tone on yourfax/modem can alleviate this problem. Add the following settingto the Init String field of the Fax/Modem Setup dialog box (acces-sible from DOS via the SETUP command):

ATS7=n

where “n” is an increased carrier wait time value in seconds. Forexample, you may wish to increase a 30 second wait time to 40or 45 seconds.

Attempt to send another fax to an international destination.

Situation

Your fax will not send to a fax machine connected to a switchingdevice that automatically directs the call to either the fax machineor answering machine.

DosFax LITE User’s Guide A-3

Sending Faxes Solving Common Problems

Solution

When sending a fax, DosFax LITE could encounter a phone lineswitcher. Phone line switchers attempt to detect if a fax device iscalling and, if so, to redirect the call to the fax machine. Detectionmay take several seconds. To ensure DosFax LITE allows enoughtime to make a connection, add the following initialization stringin the DosFax LITE setup

ATS7=90

DosFax LITE will then wait up to 90 seconds to make aconnection.

Situation

Some printers emulate the Epson FX85 dot matrix printer.DosFax LITE also emulates this printer. However, because print-ers that emulate other printers may also have extra enhance-ments, such as additional fonts, when attempting to fax withthese enhancements the results are not correct.

Solution

DosFax LITE is designed to emulate the popular Epson FX85printer standard. Any enhancements that do not comply withthese standards, such as additional fonts, will not be recognizedby DosFax LITE. Refer to Appendix B for more information.

Solving Common Problems Receiving Faxes

Receiving Faxes

Situation

Your telephone line is for both voice and fax calls, andDosFax LITE answers all calls, including voice calls.

Solution

Until the telephone is answered, the type of incoming call cannotbe determined. You can purchase an automatic fax line switcherthat will answer the telephone and direct the call as required. Or,if you prefer, you can contact your phone company about aservice called “Identacall”. Identacall gives you up to three dif-ferent phone numbers, each with its own unique ring pattern. One number would then detect the fax ring pattern and send thecall to DosFax LITE; another number would detect voice callsonly. The best solution, however, is to have a dedicated fax lineinstalled by your phone company.

Situation

When you start up DosFax LITE, the following message appears:

Modem is not responding

Solution

Check the following:

1. Make sure your fax/modem is properly installed and switchedon.

2. Go to the directory in which DosFax LITE resides and, at theDOS prompt, type . . .

Printing to Fax,and Fonts BDosFax LITE emulates the Epson FX85 dot matrix printer andearlier Epson models, and can send documents as faxes from anyDOS application that can print to an Epson printer.

It is simple to “print to fax”:

1. Load the DosFax LITE Capture TSR, FAXCAP.EXE.

2. In your DOS application, select an Epson model printer for youroutput and prepare your document for printing normally.

Note: Choose an Epson printer that is the closest Epson modelto an Epson FX85 dot matrix printer. For Epson emula-tion, DosFax LITE provides 10, 12 and 16 pitch fonts. When printing to your real printer, select any appropriateprinter model.

3. Switch Capture on by holding down left CTRL and SHIFT keyssimultaneously and then press C.

4. Print to the parallel (LPT) port DosFax LITE is configured for.DosFax LITE captures the print data, but instead of printing topaper, it converts your print output to a fax image for sending.

Hint: Assign different parallel ports for printing and for faxing. For example, define your real printer on LPTl for actualprinting and an Epson printer on LPT2 for DosFax LITEprint capture. Then, when faxing, you need only switchprinter ports within your application.
