LEARN BY DOING PROJECTS

Cal Poly’s Accounting program is recognized as a significant source of accounting

graduates in California at both the undergraduate and the graduate level because

its programs build the necessary technical knowledge and soft skills necessary in

the industry.

Externships or Summer Leadership Programs

Public accounting firms have created innovative national and local summer programs

that allow students to get a head start on the recruiting process and explore careers in

accounting. These programs are shorter than an internship and provide interactive

leadership and career development.

Internships

Internship programs provide the work experience and exposure necessary for our

graduates to choose their career path. Cal Poly’s strong relationships and recruiting

fairs ensure students have internship options that suit their aspirations.

Case Competitions

Students have opportunities throughout the year to compete in firm-sponsored case

competitions where students develop critical thinking, decision making, and communi-

cation skills while trying to solve real world issues.

Executive Partners

Students have an opportunity to be matched with senior executive mentors. These

seasoned professionals volunteer their time to meet regularly with their students to

impart the knowledge they have gained in business while also coaching them on career

options and insights into the practical environment of their career choice.

BUS 416: Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA)

Each winter, the VITA program offers free tax help to underserved individuals who

need assistance in preparing their own tax returns. As part of a senior project, students

complete extensive training to become IRS-certified volunteers and work directly with clients under the supervision of faculty and volunteer CPAs. cob.calpoly.edu/vita/

BUS 463: Low Income Tax Payer Clinic (LITC)

Under the direct supervision of Orfalea College of Business faculty, students help rep-

resent low-income clients involved in tax controversies before the IRS and the U.S. Tax

Court. This senior project also allows students to educate the community on the rights

and responsibilities of taxpayers. www.litc.calpoly.edu

CAL POLY ACCOUNTING CLUB (CPAC)

CPAC links Cal Poly accounting students to industry leaders, recruiters and professional

development opportunities to prepare career-ready graduates. Members have exclusive

access to CPAC events and opportunities throughout the year.

• Weekly meetings provide insight from industry leaders about accounting careers.

• Recruiting events and other professional development events lead to externships,

internships and full-time jobs.

• Social and networking events refine interpersonal skills.

• Mentoring programs enhance professional development and career readiness.

• Leadership opportunities with CPAC reinforce teamwork and leadership skills.

• Community Service develops a lifetime commitment to giving back. cob.calpoly.edu

No.5 The Orfalea College of Business ranks No. 5 in the nation for Return on Investment, according to a 2014 Bloomberg Businessweek survey.

$1,188,513 The LITC has saved clients nearly $1.2 million in tax liabilities since 2010.
