Do you have any questions, answers, tips, tricks, bright ideas, anything to do with turning, the club, or just want to have a good old fashioned whinge…this forum is for YOU! email: The Editor About-Turn Newsletter [email protected]

Protect yourself from entanglement While it is possible to become entangled in other woodworking machinery, the danger is heightened at the lathe. Your hands, body and clothing are closer to the hazard and the diameter and irregularity of the wood itself has a greater tendency to “grab” anything long and loose. Once clothing, hair or hanging jewelry become entangled in the wood, severe injury occurs in a microsecond. Clothing should be close fitting without being restrictive. While close fitting cuffs on sleeves are acceptable, short sleeves eliminate any possibility of having your arm wrapped into the spinning wood. Long hair is very easily drawn into the spinning wood so must be tied back into a ponytail or bun. Hanging jewelry should be removed completely. Tight fitting watches and rings are less of an issue but removing them removes the problem.

Meeting Sunday 20th August.

We scored We scored------a perfect sunny day for our new President to officiate at his first Sunday meeting. We kicked off at around 9.40 am, (we are weening our way up to our new start time of 9.00 am). Rupert commenced by welcoming a rather small group of only 18 of us. Never the less we were all happy and content sitting in the sunshine raring to go. The meeting was reported on by the President, treasurer and vice president, the treasurer’s report tabled and included on the notice board for general viewing. Rupert spoke on our Bunnings B B Q day coming up on Monday the 3rd of October. This will be a big day so please if you are able come along and give us a hand. LET GARY KNOW IF YOU ARE ABLE TO HELP. This is also the day that we give away tops to the kids, so if you have a few minutes to spare how about knocking up a few finger tops for giveaways on the day. Tony our safety officer has been very busy of late. We are extremely lucky to have a man in this position who cares enough about everyone else’s safety to constantly keep advising and urging us to be aware of what we are doing along the lines of safety and to especially PROTECT EYES PROTECT EARS (hearing) And so important PROTECT YOURSELF FROM DUST (MASKS ARE SO CHEAP) Good on you Tony.....Keep the pressure on hound us to the hilt. CHRISTMAS PARTY Sunday November 26 at the Belrose Bowling Club commencing at 10.30 am. Bring along Show and Tell items and be aware THE SPECIAL CHALLENGE FOR THE DAY IS TO TURN A LIGHTHOUSE. Any shape any size it will be interesting to see the different ideas. While on the subject of challenges. The next challenge is to turn a pepper mill. This will be interesting. Also to turn a toy, any kind of toy any size anything at all. They are to be donated to the club for our Christmas Charity Drive. Thanks again to Lloyd and his toymaker helpers who assisted with the preparation of the children’s picnic tables and benches and scooters that were donated to us by the Frenchs Forest Pre School for our charity run. Lloyd has loaded up the trailer and is doing a delivery after Tuesday workshop day. Another reason why this meeting was a good one was because we were able to welcome back to the fold my old mate Paddy. Paddy has had a rotten run of injuries of late but is now back and looking good. Paddy did not miss a beat, he was straight back into the fray telling us that he has a couple of friends who are getting rid of some timber so he will be bring in a couple of loads of wood. Good on you mate, great to have you back. One of our visitors on the day was Stirling Schunemann. Sterling is from the Hobby Society who are aiming to encourage the younger generation people to take up a hobby. He mentioned that the main requests from young people who were interested was to have a go at either woodturning, cooking or pottery. His presentation was very impressive and we will definitely have a look at being able to assist in the project.

On a very sad note I am sorry to report the passing of a very dear and special lady. Jan Reaney passed away suddenly and unexpectedly earlier this month. Joe our thoughts are with you my friend. Reminder Curl Curl Markets Saturday the 2nd of December. We need you to get to it and turn out some good pieces to sell. Here is your chance to make some pocket money. Talk to June.

Show and Tell conducted by.Graham Truelove

The ChallengeThis month’s challenge was to turn a “lidded box” This followed on from an excellent demonstration of the “art” by our master turner, Jack, at the August meeting. Jack made it look easy with the turning of a segmented item which was also on display today…. In “spring” conditions under the shedding jacaranda tree, IPP Graham presented the following:-

Greg Beaman: A very neat natural lidded box made from Orange tree and a lidded box from Been-a-tree.

Graham Truelove: A very useful Coffee box made from Merbau matched with 3 other Merbau boxes.

Paul Johnson- Walker: A challenging “intelligence test puzzle” made on the band saw. (Only few members passed the test) A finely turned dip/ biscuit bowl made from pine.

Page 5: for September Salt and Pepper Grinder - snbwoodturners.com · John started by giving us a few tips on how to save bowls that may have cracked or split. He ... 6in bench grinder and

Gorge Armen: Here are excellent items some turned as far back as 1996. End grain turned threaded lidded boxes, Huon Pine and Jacaranda Vases, Camphor Laurel, integrated stand pot-puree bowl and an intricate “two in one” Camphor laurel vase. …

John Redding: A two large lidded boxes, from Rosewood and Yew , and a fine example of Burl turning.

Tim Macgregor: A lidded box made from Jacaranda, a Silky Oak platter and a Rosewood bowl all finished in “Aussie Oil”

Tony Vidler: His “very first “lidded bowl. Tutored by Jack, destroyed by Tony, and then 99 % reconstructed by Jack. And a small elegant Blue Gum lidded box.

Demonstration John Redding – Salt & Pepper Mills

John, thanks for a well put together and easy to understand demonstration. This demonstration was very well done in a way that explained all but over all saved time. John started by giving us a few tips on how to save bowls that may have cracked or split. He also showed a very clever device that he made which allowed him to control the lathe by a foot pedal. This enabled him to use his hands to adjust and alter the job on the lathe without having to miss a beat so to speak. He explained that it was very handy but you had to be very careful (think what you are doing at all times). He also explained his way of marking the tool rest for each tool setting, once again saving time. He also showed a couple of nice gauges that he purchased from a little woodworking shop in Chesire in the mid north of England.

Jack Butler: Three examples of master fine turning. Two segmented lidded boxes and the finest example we have seen of a fluted vase.

Rupert Linn: Finished with triple E, turned to perfection, and made from acquired (Quote: “while the Ranger was not looking) Gidgee. A great example of a small and decorative lidded box.

He then commenced. Started by showing us how to true up the lathe and then using timber --(Russian Oak and Spruce) very nice. He showed the different timbers and how he stuck the pieces together with wood glue. He then replaced these pieces with pieces that he had already laminated and explained how and where he marked this piece to commence turning down.

John’s method of demonstrating is very good he starts from scratch but bypasses all the time consuming processes. John handed around drawings

(attch.) showing all the sizes required for the job. He showed the way to line up the various divisions of the mill and how to drill for the mill mechanism. John has individual drill bits marked for each hole depth.

This was a good demonstration and well worth watching. Again thanks John very well done.
