FishingKnown as the “Fishing Capital of Texas,” it’s no wonder there are tournaments for all experience levels almost every weekend during the summer months. For those who prefer a more leisurely fishing experience, there are many offshore excursions to consider, including fishing the channels and back bays. Deep Sea Roundup is a family-friendly saltwater fishing tournament that’s the oldest of its kind on the Gulf Coast.

HikingThe Port Aransas Nature Preserve has three miles of trails located on 1,217 acres. In addition to hiking, the Preserve also contains a pavilion, bicycle paths, and two overlook towers, making it a great place for those who want to take a break from the beach.

SandFestThousands will flock to the beach in Port Aransas to view the master sand sculptors from around the world creating art from sand. The annual competition is divided into three divisions: master sculptor, advanced sculptor and amateur. The festival is family oriented and there are many activities to keep everyone entertained. Logo Mountain, a mountain of sand piled high for the event will be sculpted by the master sculptors as a warm-up before the festival begins. The sculpture will offer a unique view from all sides. Lesson Mountain, where free sand sculpting lessons will be offered for anyone with a desire to learn the art of sand sculpting, will be on the beach.

USS LexingtonThe USS Lexington was the oldest working carrier ship in the United States Navy when it was decommissioned in 1991. The Lex has a 910-foot flight deck and held a crew of about 3,000 service members during World War II. The vessel has 20 restored vintage Navy aircraft on the flight deck. Also accessible are many other parts of the ship, including a theater, post office, barbershop, hospital and captain’s quarters.
