Shakti Bhatt First Book Prize▪ US-based Dalit writer Sujatha Gidla's debut book, which takes readers

through four generations of her family, at the centre of which is her uncleand People's War Group co-founder K G Satyamurthy, has been named thewinner of this year's Shakti Bhatt First Book Prize.

▪ The Shakti Bhatt First Book Prize is funded by the Shakti Bhatt Foundation. It was set up in 2008 in memory of young writer Shakti. It carries a cash prize of Rs 2 lakh.

▪ Last year, Sri Lankan author Anuk Arudpragasam won the prize for his debut novel "The Story of a Brief Marriage", set in the backdrop of the civil war.

India’s longest river bridge▪ India’s longest river bridge with total length of 19.3 kilometers will be

built on Brahmaputra river in Assam.

• This bridge will connect Dhubri of Assam to Fulbarani of Meghalaya. This bridge will reduce the distance between these two places by 203 kms.

• At present, India’s largest river bridge is Dhola-Sadia bridge, its length is 9.15 kilometers.

• Japanese Finance Agency (JICA) has approved the loan for this project as part of road infrastructure improvement package in the north-east after assessing the economic benefit of the big project.

• Two northeastern states of Assam and Meghalaya will be connected by NH127B with the help of this bridge.

Cope India air exercise

▪ India, Japan and the U.S. are set to elevate the bilateral ‘Cope India’air exercise to a trilateral format.

▪ The three countries already conduct naval war games under theexpanded Malabar naval exercise.

▪ The next edition is scheduled to be held in December for which theFinal Planning Conference to finalise the modalities of the exercise isscheduled next week in Kalaikunda [West Bengal].

The 27th Fusion Energy Conference ▪ The 27th Fusion Energy Conference (FEC 2018) was held recently in Gandhinagar,

Gujarat.▪ The event is organised by the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) and

hosted by the Department of Atomic Energy and Gandhinagar-based Institute of Plasma Research.

▪ It aims to provide a forum for the discussion of key physics and technology issues as well as innovative concepts of direct relevance to the use of nuclear fusion as a source of energy.

▪ Experts from across the world will discuss the new challenges being faced by the fusion community in the light of a number of next-step fusion devices being implemented currently.

▪ Scientists across the world are collaborating to use nuclear fusion, the reaction that powers the Sun and the stars, as source energy.

▪ The conference will also set these results against the backdrop of the requirements for a net energy producing fusion device and a fusion power plant in general, and will thus help in defining the way forward.

Chai Sahay

▪ Tea Board of India is planning to launch an app aimed at guiding smallgrowers, whose share in total tea production is increasing. The proposedname of the app is Chai Sahay (tea help) .

▪ The regulatory authority has invited bids for the design, development andmaintenance of the android-based mobile app.

▪ The mobile platform would have user-interface facilities with the targeteduser groups (the small tea grower) and the various officials. It would alsohave information on the various activities of the board officials.

▪ The main objective is to establish better two-way communication.

Migingo Island

▪ Migingo has been a source of tension between Uganda and Kenya, who have been unable to decide to whom it really belongs.

▪ Compared to half the size of a football pitch, Migingo is a small rock Island, located in Lake Victoria which is the largest lake in Africa and the largest Tropical Lake in the whole world.

▪ Since 1926, territorial ownership of the island has been consistently shown on maps and in language on official documents as Kenyan.

▪ Much, if not most, of the Ugandan protests revolve around the lucrative fishing rights, mostly for valuable Nile perch.

▪ The Nile perch is a species of freshwater fish.

Hong Kong-Zhuhai bridge

▪ Chinese President Xi Jinping has officially opened the world’s longest seacrossing bridge, nine years after construction first began.

▪ Including its access roads, the bridge spans 55km (34 miles) and connectsHong Kong to Macau and the mainland Chinese city of Zhuhai.

▪ About 30km of its total length crosses the sea of the Pearl River delta. To allow ships through, a 6.7km section in the middle dips into an undersea tunnel that runs between two artificial islands.
