Duration: 9 minutes
Instrumentation
Piano (also plays Rainstick)Violin (also plays Maracas or Egg Shakers)Violoncello
Performance Notes
PianoPedaling should be used to add resonance, but not to blur the sound; the attacks shouldalways remain clear and crisp. In the passage starting in measure 207, the pedal shouldcreate a blurry, hazy atmosphere.
The harmonics starting in measure 96 should be played above the hammers, and, ifpossible, with the pedal down. Each note should have a different harmonic (a differentcolor), although repetition is allowed.
In measure 221 and following, the pianist plays the Rainstick, which should be tiltedslowly, allowing some of the beads to drop down. Try to maintain a steady sound, tiltingback and forth as needed.
StringsNatural harmonics sound as written.
ViolinIn the passage starting in measure 208, the violinist is asked to play the Maracas or EggShakers (whichever are available). Slowly roll the shaker, trying to maintain a steadysound – not at all rhythmic.
VioloncelloMeasure 222-3: This indicates a ricochet legno. The left hand lightly stops the strings toprevent distinct pitch of the open strings; pitch is the result of the distance between bowand bridge as the bow bounces from pont to tasto.
Measure 223: play each fragment in any order, repeating each ad lib. Tempo is up to theperformer, like a cadenza. Cue the other players in measure 224.
