The program “For.. people more than 55 years old” was created by the professionals of Mount Athos Area (Halkidiki), specially for travelers who have surpassed their 55th year, have obtained travel experiences and tourism aspect, seek for “specialized simplicity” to their travels, and wish to obtain experiential tourism moments which can combine:

Day activities

1st day

Right after the arrival to airport MAKEDONIA of Thessaloniki we depart for Athos region. We will be there in approximately an hour, and after check in we rest and later dine.

2nd day

“Eat, Guide & Walk” in the area of Arnea


After breakfast we visit the mountainous area of Arnea, which is the most traditional town of Halkidiki. Arnea is famous for the Macedonian architecture and for this reason we start our tour with a walk in the traditional net. There we meet the Holy Metropolitan Church of St Stephan ˙a unique religious monument of Greece where the visitors admire the ancient findings right above their feet- where the glass floor separates the temple from the ancient site. Then we visit the folklore museum, the weaving art museum, and we will taste rare varieties of organic honey. Then we depart for the outskirts of Holomontas Mountain, where we will see the bee keepers working, learn how to collect and dry the famous mushrooms of Holomontas, and we will visit the pine plantations for the Christmas trees.

In the noon we lunch to the traditional restaurant Bakatsianos, in the forest of St Paraskevi, after we taste organic wines to the Domain of Claudia Papayianni, and local cheeses to the cheese factory of Karagianni.

3rd day

On the steps of Aristoteles and of Great Alexander


After breakfast we visit Ancient Stageira, the birthland of philosopher Aristoteles- teacher of Great Alexander. We will walk around the ancient findings, see plants and herbs of the Aristotelian Mountain, which is protected under the European Treaty Natura 2000 and we will visit the Park of Aristoteles, the unique thematic park of Halkidiki.

We lunch to Arnea, where to the Restaurant Bakatsianos we will savour an authentic ancient Greek menu and hear authentic ancient Greek dialogues!

Late in the afternoon we return to the hotel.

Mount Athos

Mount Athos

After breakfast men will visit vineyards in Mount Athos, where in an area of 100 hectares and at an altitude of 250m, are being cultivated with organic way, to the slopes of Metochi Chromitsa, of Holy Monastery St. Panteleimon. They will be guided in the blessed vineyards, taste the fragrant wine, and will be informed in details for the production procedure.

The noon we lunch to Kritikos Gallery & Restaurants, one of the most famous and most awarded restaurants of Greece, where we will enjoy and authentic monastery menu. After lunch we visit Moni Zigou on the land borders of Mount Athos. Moni Zigou is the unique Athonite monastery which can be visited by women too, being nowadays under excavation, just a few meters away from the borders of the monastic state!


5th day

«Eat, Learn & Walk» to the area of Ouranoupoli


After breakfast we visit Ouranoupoli. We will walk around the Tower of Prosforiou, visit the shops of the village from which we will be provided with authentic Athonite products, tasting Athonite wines and olive oil. At the end we see the Athonite monks create byzantine icons.

The noon we go to Aristotelian Cultural center where we will watch a 3D movie themed “The life in Mount Athos”, feeling contemplation, serenity, and deep religiousness.

We lunch to the agrotouristic farm “Platanorema”, where we attend cooking lessons: bread and the traditional cheese pie with feta cheese from Arnea! Our visit to the farm will close with a show of tsipouro production procedure.

“Eat & Drink” to Athos Region and the slopes of Holomonta


After breakfast we depart for Megali Panagia where we visit traditional raki cauldrons (distilleries). Here the locals produce a strong tsipouro and offer this to us with lots of appetizers (mezedhes) and lots of love. We watch the whole procedure and taste the tsipouro right the time of its production!

Right after we depart for Marathousa, where we will visit the Estate Livadiotis with the wonderful vineyards. It is about a traditional estate, with stone built buildings, winery which produces only organic wine and its traditional cauldron (distillery), producing strong tsipouro. We will taste its wines and will lunch traditionally with music, so as late in the afternoon to depart for Thessaloniki.

After breakfast we board on one of the ships of Athos Sea cruises for the round cruise of Mount Athos. We will see all the Holy Monasteries of the west side, sholy treasures, and will admire the Athonite architecture.


Later we visit Ouranoupoli. We will walk around the Tower of Prosforiou, visit the shops of the village from which we will be provided with authentic Athonite products, and taste Athonite wines and olive oil. At the end we see the Athonite monks create byzantine icons.


5th day

To magical islands!

To magical islands!

Today we visit the island of Ammouliani. We see the famous sandy beaches and make the round of the exceptional beauty’s island.

We visit the Holy Church of St Nikolas and the Folklore Museum with the authentic artifacts from Minor Asia. We see how are made the traditional “amigdalota” from Minor Asia, being initiated in the local pastry art, which is always inspired by the Holy Athos.

We lunch to the famous restaurant Janis, eating fresh fish and seafood, cooked with the traditional way of Ammouliani. Ammouliani is famous for the volume and quantity in its fish production! Percentage has the biggest fishing fleet in Central Macedonia. This means that you eat always fish of the day. Besides to Ammouliani people say that fish from yesterday is not fish!!!

After breakfast we will enjoy some hours of relaxation to a spa of the region, and the noon we will visit Kritikos Gallery & Restaurants, where we take a wonderful Christmas cocktail.

The afternoon we follow a “Eat, Guide & Walk” program to the mountainous area of Arnea, which is the most traditional town of Halkidiki. Arnea is famous for the Macedonian architecture and for this reason we start our tour with a walk in the traditional net. There we meet the Holy Metropolitan Church of St Stephan ˙a unique religious monument of Greece where the visitors admire the ancient findings right above their feet- where the glass floor separates the temple from the ancient site. Then we visit the folklore museum, the weaving art museum, and we will taste rare varieties of organic honey. Before our dinner we will walk to the Christmas ice rink and the traditional Christmas market.

In the evening we dine authentically for Crhistmas to the Restaurant Bakatsianos and later we go to the central cobbled square, where every year is being cut a huge “Hristopsomo” (Christ bread, part of the local customs) and is offered to the guests. Traditional carols, choirs, Christmas lanterns, melodies of celebration and joy, will transfer us to other eras, will make us to feel real Christmas and to become again children.

After breakfast we visit Paramithohora to Stratoni. A whole Christmas village with fairies, witches and goblins waits for us so as to make us dream and live fairy Christmas. At the house of Santa Claus we will try homemade sweets, and the little train will stroll us around the village!

The noon we will lunch to Kritikos Gallery & Restaurants, confirming its fame as one of the best restaurants of the country, enjoying a majestic Christmas menu, inspired by the rich local tradition.

Later we visit the land borders of Mount Athos and Moni Zigou. Moni Zigou is the unique Athonite monastery which can be visited by women, being nowadays under excavation, only few meters away from the borders of the monastic state!

A friendly, family run hotel in the centre of Ouranoupolis, very close to the Byzantine Tower and the harbor. It is open all year round and aims to provide good quality accommodation at very reasonable prices.

Over the years it has become the favourite stop-over for visitors to Mount Athos and travelling monks. Many intellectuals and artists enjoyed the hospitality of Xenios Zeus, among them the philosopher Herbert Marcuse, the monk Paisios and the painter Yiannis Tsarouhis. This is where the director Theodoros Agelopoulos stayed for two months in 1997, while filming his movie «Eternity and a Day» for which he was honoured with the golden palm at the Canes film festival in 1998.

There is a traditionally styled TV lounge and bar, which is also used as a breakfast room. A delicious and highly recommended continental breakfast is served, which includes fresh organic eggs, home made jam or preserves and seasonal home grown fruits.

Breakfast can also be taken alfresco on the patio in front of the hotel, under large umbrellas, while watching the world go by.

The rooms are spacious, tastefully decorated and comfortable, as well as being modestly priced. Each room has a private balcony with a table and chairs, ideal for relaxing. Some rooms have spectacular views of the bay.

Russian monks were cultivating vineyards, olive trees, cereals, gardens…

Chromitsa in Russian means feeder. The Metochi was renamed to Metochi Chromitsa for the reason that it was the main feeder of the St Panteleimon monastery in olive oil, bread, and vegetables.

In 1973 Evangelos Tsantalis due to severe storm found shelter to Metochi Chromitsa. There, into the pristine nature, he descerned abandonded vines. He asked a permission from the monastery’s abbot to cultivate them, and in the same time to make wine from them.

So the Athonite wine arrived to the out world, putting the base for a start of a great tradition. With a Protected Geographical Indication Mount Athos, the wines have won major awards in strict international oenological competitions and praising critics by notable wine critics around the world.

Wine “Kormilitsa” is being recognized from the Russian authorities as the “Official Wine of the Kremlin, Moscow”.

On the slopes of Cholomontas and Aristotelian Mountain, the cheese dairy of Theophilus Karagiannis (in Arnea) combines tradition with the modern technology, creating the famous goat cheese and yoghurt.
