Beginning on Monday, May 1st and continuing every Monday throughout the summer, you will be

able to buy local produce from local farmers at the Health Department. The hours will be from

10:30AM until 1:00PM making it easy for all county workers to stop by during their lunch hour.

The market idea came together through the work of both the Health Department’s WIC and Educa-

tion divisions. Having the market at the Health Department will make it easier for WIC participants to

use their Farmers Market Nutrition Program (FMNP) vouchers. Currently the voucher redemption

rate is below 50% and having the market at the Health Department on the day the vouchers are dis-

tributed should make redeeming them more convenient.

The Health Education division became involved because obesity has been identified as a health pri-

ority in the two previous Community Health Assessments. With all of the current farmers markets in

the southern portion of the county, a farmers’ market in Carthage will allow people in the northern

portion to have access to fresh produce. While at the market, you will find recipes using the seasonal

produce being sold along with helpful nutritional information.

Along with seasonal fresh fruits and vegetables, all grown and produced in North Carolina, custom-ers will also be able to purchase a variety of cheeses and flowers. For more information regarding the market, feel free to contact Lauren Rakes [email protected] or Rich Tompkins [email protected] .

FARMERS MARKET AT THE HEALTH DEPARTMENT

The Moore County Cattleman's Association will be awarding one $500.00 scholarship to a Moore

County student who is pursuing a post-secondary degree at a two or four year college, trade school

or university (including community colleges) and majoring in an agricultural-related curriculum. The

Scholarship Committee reviews all applications submitted and the scholarship recipient will be cho-

sen based on academic merit, career goals, school and community involvement, and agricultural

background. The application should be completed and returned by 5pm April 21, 2017. A copy of the

application can be found on the Moore County Cooperative Extension website -moore.ces.ncsu.edu

or can be picked up at the Moore County Cooperative Extension office.

The Moore County Sheriff’s Office along with other Law Enforcement agencies participated in the Governor’s Highway Safety Program St. Patrick’s Day “Booze and Loose It” Campaign from March 16th thru March 19th. Each year, more than 33 million Ameri-cans and fellow partiers worldwide raise pints of Guinness and forkfuls of cab-bage in the name of the Ireland’s pri-mary patron saint. But the good times are too often ruined by drunk-driving incidents, which have a devastating im-pact on lives. National Highway Traffic Safety Admini-stration reports that during the first six hours of March 18, nearly a third of traf-fic crash fatalities involve drunk drivers and 252 people were killed in drunk-driving crashes on St. Patrick's Day be-tween 2011 and 2015.

On Friday March 17, 2017, the Moore County Sheriff’s Office and members of the community came

together in a friendly, informal environment to discuss community issues, build relationships and

enjoy a good cup of coffee. All community members were invited to attend. The event was held-

from 9:30 am to 10:30 am on Friday March 17, 2017 at the Robbins Library located at 161 E. Mag-

nolia Dr., Robbins, NC 27325.

Coffee with a Deputy provides a unique opportunity for community members to ask questions and

learn more about the Sheriff’s department’s work in Moore County. The majority of contacts law en-

forcement has with the public happen during emergencies or emotional situations. Those situations

are not always the most effective times for relationship-building with the community and some com-

munity members may feel that officers are unapproachable on the street. Coffee with a Deputy is

intended to break down barriers and allows for a relaxed, one-on-one interaction Engaging our

community in public safety efforts is a top priority of the Moore County Sheriff’s Office. Sheriff Neil

Godfrey stated that “we share the community’s concerns and make every effort to address them.”

Sheriff’s Office has been rotating the venue throughout the county in order to reach as many partici-

pating citizens as possible.

Coffee with a Deputy is a national initiative supported by The United States Department of Justice

and Office of Community Oriented Policing Services. Similar events are being held across the coun-

try. Sheriff’s Offices as well as local police departments are striving to make lasting connections

with the communities they serve.

The program aims to advance the practice of community policing through improving relationships

between deputies, police officers and community members, one cup of coffee at a time.

St. Patrick's revelers thought wearing green made one invisible to leprechauns and fairy creatures who would pinch anyone they could see (anyone not wearing green). People began pinching those who didn't wear green as a reminder that leprechauns would sneak up and pinch green-abstainers. These Tax Department Employees didn’t want to get pinched on St. Patrick’s Day!!!

What Animals Live in Your Surroundings?

The Moore County Health Department and MooreHealth Inc. have released the 2016 Community

Health Assessment (CHA). The CHA is a systematic collection, assembly, analysis, and dissemination

of information about the overall health of Moore County. The purpose of the CHA is to identify priority

that will adequately address these factors. The CHA is required by the North Carolina Division of Pub-

lic Health of all health departments.

The selected health priority issues that were determined through the CHA process in 2016 are obesity,

substance abuse, and aging issues. In the spring of 2017, the Health Department and MooreHealth,

Inc. will continue to collaborate with FirstHealth of the Carolinas and other community partners to de-

velop action plans, explore available resources including funding opportunities, and guide the work for

each selected health priority issue.

MooreHealth Inc. is a volunteer community organization made up of nearly 20 member agencies that

is committed to developing cooperative planning that promotes health and improves the quality-of-life

for the residents of Moore County.
