Words from the Superintendent

By Dr. José A. Cervantes

Hello, Team Edgewood! Th e 2013-2014 school year is behind us and preparations are well under way for the 2014-2015 academic year.

As we came to the end of the last school year, we honored hundreds of the District’s brightest and most punctual students at the Excellence in Edgewood; we recognized our longtime employees, teachers of the year, and retirees at Night of Edgewood Stars; and we sent our seniors from Kennedy and Memorial high schools into the world to start college,

enter the military, or join the workforce.

Th is summer, Edgewood ISD has opportunities exclusively for EISD students. Th e District is off ering summer enrichment programs, acceleration programs, and sports camps. Many of these programs have breakfast,

lunch, and dinner for Edgewood ISD students, and transportation is provided to most of the summer sites.

With the new school year on the horizon, you can look forward to bigger and better things in Edgewood ISD.

Starting August 25 - the fi rst day of class - all 6th grade students will report to the 6th Grade Academy at the former Hoelscher ES building, 1602 W. Th ompson Place. Th e District will use a transitional design that helps bridge students from the structure

of elementary school to the independence of middle school.

Th e District is implementing my vision of an elementary fi ne arts magnet program. Five of the elementary schools will adopt a designated fi ne arts program in 2014-2015; the other fi ve elementaries will implement the fi ne arts magnet the following year.

Edgewood ISD is bringing a full range of services that charter and private schools do not provide. If you’re not here, you’re missing out!

Th e Board of Trustees approved the implementation of an elementary fi ne arts magnet program for music and dance in fi ve elementary schools starting in 2014-2015.

Th e fi ve campuses and the designated fi ne arts program are Cisneros ES (choir), Henry B. Gonzalez ES (mariachi/guitar), Las Palmas ES (dance), Perales ES (piano), and Winston ES (orchestra).

Th e transfer process will be implemented for any student who wants to participate in any of these programs.

Th e remaining fi ve elementary schools will adopt a fi ne arts magnet program in 2015-2016.

Edgewood ISD’s new Steinway Model D Concert Grand piano, which arrived in April, ties in to the District’s vision of creating fi ne arts magnet programs at the elementary schools.

Maria Contreras, Edgewood ISD’s Teacher of the Year, receives the KENS5/San Antonio Credit Union ExCEL Award from Steve Hennigan, President and CEO of SACU, and Robert G. McCann, President and General Manager of KENS5. Contreras is a 4th grade bilingual teacher at Loma Park ES. Along with the ExCEL Award golden apple, Contreras received a $1,000 cash prize. She has worked in Edgewood ISD since 1994. Contreras has a Bachelor of Arts from St. Mary’s University.

District brings world-class

Steinway experience to students

KHS teacher nominated for national awardEdgewood ISD

congratulates Kennedy HS teacher Trina Cox for being nominated for the 2013-2014 Life Changer of the Year award.

Th e program recognizes school district employees across the country who exemplify excellence, positive infl uence, and leadership.

Cox’s nomination form stated she is the best role model and teacher anyone could ask for. She goes the extra mile to help her students get where they want to be. Always in a great mood, she clearly cares for her students and has a knack for encouraging them to come to school each day. Cox accepts students for who they are.

Edgewood ISD fi ne arts students and world-class professional musicians came together for an evening at which the District’s new Steinway Model D Concert Grand piano was unveiled.

Th e event – “A Night of Inspiration” – was held May 16 in the Edgewood Fine Arts Th eatre.

Edgewood ISD students performed in diff erent artistic expressions accompanied by pianist Silvia Santinelli

and world-renowned violinist Francisco Fullana. Santinelli, who has performed worldwide, is a founder of the Chamber Orchestra of San Antonio. Acclaimed for his concerto performances in both Europe and the United States, Fullana has appeared as a soloist with numerous orchestras.

“Th e Steinway Model D Concert Grand is a majestic musical instrument that is hand-crafted to

the greatest standards,” Superintendent Dr. José A. Cervantes said. “Our students will experience the highest level of music expression for generations to come.

“Th is investment is for the students. Th e Steinway will bring a world-class exposure in music programs to

Edgewood students for the next 100 years, or more.”

Th e Steinway ties in to Edgewood ISD’s vision of creating fi ne arts magnet programs – strings, dance, folklorico, mariachi/orchestra – at the elementary schools beginning with the 2014-2015 school year.

Workers from the local Steinway Piano Gallery deliver the new piano at the Edgewood Fine Arts Th eatre on April 30.

Dr. Silvia Santinelli and Francisco Fullana fi nished ‘A Night of Inspiration’ by performing together.

Edgewood ISD students in the YOSA MÁS (Youth Orchestras of San Antonio: Music After School) strings program accompanied Dr. Santinelli.

Th e Edgewood Hall of Fame welcomed two new inductees to the alumni tribute that started in 1982. Th e 2014 inductees are Mary Agnes Rodriguez, a 1978 Memorial HS graduate, and Reynaldo Meza Jr., who graduated from Kennedy HS in 1967. Th ey are

shown in the photo with Superintendent Dr. José A. Cervantes at the Hall of Fame banquet. Rodriguez is a professional artist whose work has varied

over the years. Meza is a retired band director who currently serves as the University Interscholastic League Region 11 Secretary for music events.

Th e Edgewood ISD Police Department’s mission may be to provide a safe environment, but two offi cers proved it is a caring and concerned department.

Offi cers Lilly Hernandez and Frank Guajardo responded to a call from Winston ES about a student not being picked up after school. While taking the girl home, the offi cers saw the student’s mother being arrested for assaulting an unidentifi ed person on the street. Th e girl was taken to her grandmother instead.

Th e offi cers noticed the girl’s shoes had no sole. Offi cer Guajardo asked for the girl’s shoe size; that evening, the offi cers bought the girl a pair of new shoes and took them to her.

Edgewood ISD is preparing for its staff Convocation on Monday, August 18, at the Edgewood Th eatre.

Th e Convocation will have a “Believe” theme.

Campuses and departments are encouraged to participate in a spirit contest. Each campus and department will have 1 minute to set up and 1 minute to perform on stage.

Th e skit may involve audio and/or dance. If the skit has music on a CD or cassette, please send that to the Public Relations Offi ce by August 11.
