Welcome to Summer Fun!

Val Rogers and Linda Whitacre, new Co-Presidents would like to take this opportunity to thank you for your support as we begin our new leadership positions. Both of us recognize what this organization has provided us – friends, fellowship, fun and food – and we willingly give back to you by serving in this position. We talk about “where we would we be without Newcomers” and we would be in a lonely place. We are so thankful for each of you and look forward to building the membership and providing dynamic meetings, activities, and friendships for all.

A special thanks to our outgoing President Jena Davenport and the board members that are retiring from their positions. They have served this organization well. Jena plans to continue to serve in the position of Publicity Chair and Out-to-Lunch co-coordinator. Several other retiring members are also continuing in new positions.

It is MEMBERSHIP RENEWAL time between June 1 and June 30. Don’t Delay. You must send in your renewal form, found in this newsletter, by June 30. If for some reason your $25 check and renewal form is not in by June 30, your name will not be in the membership booklet.

This newsletter is for the three summer months and is filled with fun events. Check out the wine tasting events and RSVP to Chris Strong. Daytime activities continue during the summer as well as evening Bunco and Game Night unless indicated. Be sure to read about the new fall activity, “Party with a Purpose”, provided by the Social Committee. There is only limited space so sign-up soon.

NEW FALL ACTIVITY ! Susie Balthazar is premiering a new activity to begin in September – Dining Out – Read the information and sign-up to participate. It’s a great way to get to know members and to try new restaurants.

Canasta: Canasta is played the first Monday of the month, from 10 am till 2 pm, at the East Cobb Senior Center, 3322 Sandy Plains Rd, Marietta, 770-528-5355. June’s date is Monday June 6th. July’s date is Friday July 8th August date is Monday, August 1 We play five deck Canasta. If you are unfamiliar with this version of the game, we will be happy to teach you. We usually have several tables and take a break for lunch. Please bring your lunch with you. There is a refrigerator for storing your food items. Coffee and soft drinks are available at the front desk (25 Cents per cup) as well as a soda machine (about $1) in the break room. We try to play at least four games, and rotate players after each game. It is not necessary to stay the entire day. The East Cobb Senior Center has its challenges relative to warmth. It is in our best interest to always bring a sweater!!! All Newcomers who have indicated an interest in Canasta are sent reminder e-mails. This location is a wonderful art and antique gallery and is centrally located for Cobb residents. It is off of the South Marietta Parkway (the south 120 loop) near the intersection with Cobb Parkway #41 & behind a U-Haul office. Please bring your lunch with you this day. You may wish to pack it with an icepack since we do not have access to a refrigerator at this location. Coffee drinkers are welcome to use the on-site Keurig coffee maker for 25 cents a cup. Then on June 27, July 25 & August 22, 10 am, plan to join us at the East Cobb Senior Center at 3332 Sandy Plains Road, Marietta, 30066, 770-509-4900. We arrive at 10:00 a.m. and start playing at 10:15 a.m. We take a lunch break around 12:30 p.m., at which time we enjoy the lunch that we have brought with us. There is a refrigerator & microwave available for us all to use. Coffee is also available at 25 cents per cup. We invite everyone to stay & continue play after our lunch break but understand if your schedule does not allow it that day. Play will continue until 2:30-3:00 p.m. Mark your calendars and plan to be part of this fun group. We are consistently drawing a record-breaking capacity attendance of 7 tables, which is 28 players at each gathering. Therefore, it is IMPERATIVE that you RSVP your intention to play as soon as you know that your schedule allows you to participate. Once all 7 tables are filled, a "Wait List" will be formed to be used in the event that there is a cancellation. We NEED to know if your plans change and you can not join us after all. Please call to Bev or Kari to advise us as soon as possible so that the next player on the Wait List can be contacted. All players are routinely sent reminder e-mails. When you RSVP, please tell Bev or Kari if you have a Mah Jongg set, mat, and a card table and/or chairs that the group can use that day. Walk & Talk Groups….. East Cobb Walkers: aka: The Wacky Wednesday Walkers This spring we are celebrating 5 years of Wacky Wednesday Walking. Leisurely Walkers Welcome! We meet every Wednesday, 9:15 am at Starbucks back parking lot – 31 Johnson Ferry Rd, at Papermill Rd., Marietta, 30068. From there we car pool a short distance to the end of Columns Dr. and park in their lot. Parking passes are required or pay a $3 fee - the reason for the car pooling. Many of us have the passes. Good to know: We walk along the side of the Chattahoochee River under the trees. The flat route is about 3 miles and takes about an hour. We return to Starbucks for refreshments afterwards. Many of us already know the benefits of a regular exercise program. Join us and enjoy the chance to socialize at the same time. In the event of inclement weather we will walk at the inside track on the 2nd floor of the North Bldg. at Johnson Ferry Baptist Church - 955 Johnson Ferry Rd, Marietta, and enjoy their coffee shop afterwards.

What---Dining Out

When---3rd Sunday of each month,

starting in September

Who---All members, singles and couples, forming groups of no-more-than 8. The activity chairwoman, Susie Balthazor, will assign groups each month attempting to mix-up members as much as possible. One member of each group will be designated as “group leader” for that month. Groups will be formed for one month only, so will be different each month, depending on who signs up.

Where---Restaurants in the metro Atlanta area. To be chosen monthly by the member designated as group leader. Everyone will get an opportunity to choose.

How---It’s easy. As soon as the newsletter comes out, check your calendar. If you would like to participate, email to chairwoman by the first of each month. The group leader will be designated and contacted by the chairwoman and all other group members contacted by the group leader for that month.
