CHILDRESS TAKES THE HELM – The future of Minnesota Vikings football started on January 6, 2006, when Brad Childress was named the seventh head coach in franchise history. He joined the Vikings following a 7-year stint with the Philadelphia Eagles, including the past 4 as offensive coordinator. During his tenure in Philadelphia, the Eagles represented the NFC in Super Bowl XXXIX, amassed a 70-42 (.625) record in the regular season, won 4 straight NFC East titles from 2001-04, and advanced to the playoffs from 2000-04. During Childress’ time as offensive coordinator (2002-05), the Eagles posted a 43-21 record in the regular season, the most wins in the NFC over that span. The Eagles’ offense under Childress was able to excel while adjusting to personnel transition and injuries. The team ranked in the NFL’s top 10 in total offense twice in the past four seasons and assembled numerous individual achievements. In the four seasons that Childress guided the offense, the team amassed 5,000+ yards each season, averaging 333.8 yards per game in that span. The 2003 Eagles led the NFC and set a team record with only 22 turnovers. From 2000-05, the Eagles’ offense featured seven players who earned 14 berths in the Pro Bowl, highlighted by QB Donovan McNabb, who has been honored with 5 berths in the game. Throughout his coaching career, Childress has built winners, taking losing programs at Illinois and Wisconsin and turning them into Big Ten champions and Rose Bowl teams. Before joining Philadelphia in 1999, the 1998 squad went 3-13. In two seasons the Eagles were in the playoffs and in three seasons were winning the first of four straight NFC East titles.

COORDINATING THEIR EFFORTS – When Brad Childress began building his Vikings’ coaching staff, he wanted coaches who were good teachers and hard workers, qualities that he found in offensive coordinator Darrell Bevell, defensive coordinator Mike Tomlin, and special teams coordinator Paul Ferraro. Bevell spent the past 6 seasons coaching on the Green Bay Packers’ staff, including the last 3 as quarterbacks coach. During his tenure with the Packers, the team went 57-39 in regular-season play and won 3 straight NFC North titles from 2002-04. In the past 3 seasons, QB Brett Favre led the NFL with 1,026 completions, ranked 2nd with 82 TD passes, and 4th with 11,330 yards. From 2002-04, the Packers had a 41-game streak with a TD pass, all thrown by Favre, that ranks as the 2nd-longest streak in NFL history, trailing the 49-game streak held by Johnny Unitas’ Baltimore Colts from 1956-60. Tomlin coached the defensive backs for the Tampa Bay Buccaneers for the past 5 seasons and was a part of one of the top defenses in the NFL. During his time in Tampa Bay, the Buccaneers’ defense led the league twice in overall defense and was ranked in the top 6 in the NFL in total defense each of his 5 seasons with the Bucs. Over the past 5 seasons (2001-05), Tampa Bay’s defense posted more interceptions (112) than any other team in the league. Tomlin’s defensive backs earned numerous honors for their play during his tenure. Perennial Pro Bowl CB Ronde Barber earned 3 trips to the Pro Bowl and S John Lynch was selected twice. Ferraro was the assistant special teams coach for the NFC runner-up Carolina Panthers in 2005 after spending the previous 24 seasons coaching in the college ranks. In 2005, the Panthers finished 2nd in the NFL in punt return average with 10.8, second only to Baltimore’s 11.1. Panthers’ P Jason Baker finished 3rd in the NFL with a 38.9 net punting average. During the Panthers’ playoff run their special teams play stood out as Pro Bowl WR Steve Smith returned a punt for a TD in the NFC Championship and the punt coverage team held opponents to a 2.2-yard return average. K John Kasay connected on all 6 of his FG attempts and Baker placed 7 of his 16 punts inside the 20-yard line.

The Vikings benefited from having a pair of veteran QBs on the roster in 2005 that were proven winners. Daunte Culpepper (3 Pro Bowls) and Brad Johnson (2 Pro Bowls) combined for 7 games with passer ratings of 100+ points, the 5th-highest total in team history. Johnson led the NFL in 2005 with an interception percentage of 1.4, throwing only 4 picks in 294 attempts. Johnson set a new Vikings’ record with a 2.7% career interception percentage, passing Warren Moon’s old mark. The Vikings ended 2005 with the 3rd-best total in team history with a mere 14 fumbles and had 3 games on the season without a turnover, tied for the 4th-best.

GETTING DEFENSIVE – The Vikings’ late season turnaround and 6-game winning streak in 2005 was keyed by a flurry of takeaways. The Vikings tied for 1st in the NFC and tied for 2nd in the NFL with 24 interceptions as a team while FS Darren Sharper led the NFC with 9 picks. The Vikings managed only 10 takeaways in the opening 7 games of the season (6 INTs, 4 FRs) and reversed that trend to post 22 takeaways during the 6-game winning streak (17 INTs, 5 FRs). The Vikings’ pressure from the defensive front played a prominent role as well. In the opening 7 games of the season the Vikings were allowing 361.1 yards per game, but turned it around in the past 9 games, allowing 293.8 yards per game.

PRESEASON GAME 2, VS. BALTIMORE RAVENS -- Page 7 JOHNSON RETURNS – Brad Johnson made his 1st Vikings start since 1998 vs. Detroit (11/6/05). After Daunte Culpepper suffered a season-ending knee injury in 2005, Johnson came off the bench to lead the team to a 7-2 record in the final 9 games of the season as the Vikings climbed back into the playoff picture. Johnson threw his 1st career TD pass at the Metrodome vs. Detroit in the opening game of 1996. His 56 touchdown passes as a Viking rank 6th all-time in the team record books. Including playoffs, Johnson has thrown 162 touchdown passes for 27,201 yards in a career that began back with the Vikings as a 9th-round choice in 1992. He holds an NFL record with 10 straight seasons over 60% completions (minimum 100 attempts). Johnson holds a 22-10 mark in his 32 career starts for the Vikings and has a 65-43 regular-season record as a starter. Johnson has led all 3 NFL teams he has played for to the playoffs and led Tampa Bay to the Super Bowl XXXVII title over Oakland. Johnson became the 51st player in NFL history to eclipse the 25,000 career passing yards mark at Detroit (12/4) and passed the 150 career TD mark (currently 155). He stands 56th in NFL history with the 155 TDs. Johnson eclipsed 25,000 career yards passing in 2005 and stands 48th in NFL history with 25,798 yards.
