Davie St. Hannah Costner, Program Assistant Raleigh, NC 27601 [email protected] www.artspacenc.org 919.821.2787 Artists in Conversation with the World Nsenga Knight, former Regional Emerging Artist-in-Residence and Rose Aslan, Ph.D. Candidate, Dept of Religious Studies, UNC-Chapel Hill Thursday August 15, 6-7:30pm Raleigh, N.C. – Join us on August 15 at Artspace, a non-profit visual art center in Raleigh, as Rose Aslan, Ph.D. Candidate, Department of Religious Studies, UNC-Chapel Hill engages in conversation with former Regional Emerging Artist-in-Residence Nsenga Knight and the audience. This discussion will take place in conjunction with Knight’s Artspace exhibition Ritual and Revolution, and is a free and open event. Nsenga Knight will begin the evening with a 20-minute talk about the work she created during her residency at Artspace. Then, Rose Aslan will speak about her doctoral research on the Hajj pilgrimage in order to complement Knight’s interests, including ritual, history, and the construction of communal narratives. Knight’s current exhibition, Ritual and Revolution, draws inspiration from pilgrimage rituals in particular. Aslan will touch upon the historical roots and the contemporary practices of the Hajj pilgrimage, and questions from the audience are welcomed and encouraged. Nsenga Knight holds a M.F.A. in Photography and Cinema Studies from the University of Pennsylvania and a B.A. in Film Production from Howard University. Her recent exhibitions include The First Year, Galveston Arts Center, Galveston, TX, Muslim Voices of Philadelphia, International House, Philadelphia, PA, and Reading with Jamal Cyrus, New Museum, New York, NY. Rose Aslan is currently pursuing a Ph.D. in the Department of Religious Studies at UNC-Chapel Hill. Aslan’s dissertation, From Grave to Shrine: The Making of Sacred Place at the Tomb of `Ali ibn Abi Talib in Najaf, she describes as centering on, “the development of sacred space in medieval Najaf, Iraq, and the connection between sectarian identity and place.” Aslan received a M.A. in Arab and Islamic Studies from the American University in Cairo in 2008 and a B.A. in Near Eastern and Religious Studies from the University of British Columbia in 2004.
