Our PartnershipUmoja Student Development Corporation (Umoja) equips young people to succeed in college and career and confidently claim their future. Umoja currently partners with 13 public high schools across Chicago and provides professional development and curricula with 50+ additional schools, nonprofits and districts across Chicago and beyond.

The Youth Job Center (YJC) has provided job training, career advising and employment support to youth ages 14 to 25. Currently the YJC serves two distinct populations; High school youth ages14 – 18 and out-of-school youth ages 18 – 25.

Vision for YJC and Umoja collaboration: To transform postsecondary preparation in Chicago public

high schools and beyond and prevent ‘opportunity youth’ by building a model for authentic engagement and support of students for both college and career planning and success.

Unit 1: How to Do School Performance Task The final outcome of My Legacy, Our Legacy, displays senior pennants, a visual symbol of every senior’s plan after high school. From this display, other students at school will see the graduating class poised to pursue a college degree or take advantage of a career opportunity. The seniors’ pennants will include their college or career choice, a saying that relates to achieving goals, and a symbol to represent their identity. Lastly, a gallery walk celebration and final group legacy activity will push the class to develop a single pennant representative of the class, a symbol of the senior seminar’s legacy as a whole. ● Personal Statement Toolkit

February Unit 2: College and Career Performance Task Seniors receive a letter 15 years from now inviting them to present to students at their former high school on Career Day. Students will create a 3-5 minute presentation including a poster board containing a description of career (duties, examples of typical workdays, places of employment, salary, etc.), requirements (education, qualifications, promotions or steps needed to attain this career, etc.), benefits and challenges to this career, opportunities for further advancement in this career.

Career Fair: Similar to a College Fair, professionals from various disciplines will be present to share with students their academic and career paths and answer any questions.

Unit 3: Winning Behaviors Performance Task Students prepare a presentation to showcase their post-secondary decision. Throughout the unit they collected most of the information they’ll need to present, for example, Decision Day-Final Fit Research. This is the students’ chance to share and celebrate their plan for the future. Teachers will plan a Decision Day Celebration for May 1st and students will present a poster display with the informed choice information.

Senior Cohort I All seniors attending senior seminar will participate in Senior Cohort, which will provide them the opportunity to take deeper dives into their career choices, including research, visioning, career panels, and interviews with professionals in their field(s) of choice. project is to produce something

that will be immediately useful to

students after graduation that

emphasizes successful adult living

students learned about a variety of

topics to help them care for

themselves such as how to

communicate effectively, resolve

conflict, handle money and credit,

and general habits of mind, heart,

and body. Students present their

postsecondary toolboxes to the

class and use the warm and cool

protocol to provide feedback to

their peers.
