THE BOYS' BRIGADE (BB)

For more information on BB and GB: missions @cathedral.org.sg

The Boys’ Brigade was founded in 1883 by Sir William Alexander Smith in Scotland, with a view towards “Advancing Christ’s Kingdom among Boys”. In Singapore, the movement was started on 12 January 1930 by James Milner Fraser.

Through weekly devotions, drills and games, the Boys’ Brigade nurtures obedience, reverence, discipline and self-respect. BB boys take part in interschool competitions such as the BB Adventure Quest and BB Character Quest, which encourage character development and Bible knowledge, and learn to care for the community through BB Cares and BB Share a Gift.

St Andrew’s Cathedral sponsors 4 BB Companies with a combined enrolment of about 120 Boys. The Companies are run by 8 active officers, including church staff and volunteers.

The Girls’ Brigade works with churches and schools in Singapore to nurture girls to become followers of Jesus Christ and to find true enrichment in life. Through worship, Bible stories, craft work, foot drill, learning journeys, camps, and service to the community, they learn to cultivate reverence, self-control and a sense of responsibility.

St Andrew’s Cathedral sponsors the 83rd GB Company (North View Primary School).

BEFRIENDING THE MIGRANT WORKERS (BMW)

This ministry started as a result of a Cathedral town-hall, termed, “Blessings and Boundaries” which was held earlier on, in March 2018.

At this meeting, members discussed what our church should do with the estimated 600 migrant workers, mostly domestic helpers and mainly from Myanmar, who gather on our church grounds every Sunday.

“Blessings” referred to the fact that God is bringing migrant workers into our midst, our church. How can St Andrew’s, being a House of Prayer for all nations (Isaiah 56:1-7), be God’s blessing to these sojourners (Leviticus 19:33-34; 24:22; Hebrews 13:1-2)? On the point of “Boundaries”, the meeting discussed the practical issues related to the use of space and facilities, security and crowd management; these were causing some consternation to the Cathedral.

A few members at the meeting saw the potential of the situation and seized the opportunity to befriend these visitors - to welcome them to our church and to share the gospel with them.

Very precious time-off - meeting friends and family, resting and relaxing in a safe and clean Cathedral compound

Since 1 June 2018, BMW teams of church members walk the grounds of the Cathedral on Sunday afternoons to chat with these foreigners and to distribute flyers and tracts in the Myanmar language. These materials refer to the “Boundaries” and carry an invitation for them to join the English-language classes and the Myanmar worship Service, and to make use of the helplines for prayer and counselling.

In September, BMW also organized a cookery session to help domestic helpers cook local dishes for their employers. Talks on first aid, childcare and eldercare are in the pipeline.

These friendships fostered on the church grounds have also resulted in an increase in the attendance at the weekly Myanmar Worship Service and Language tuition classes. We hope for more members to join this outreach ministry to befriend migrant workers.

Migrant workers, especially domestic helpers have to have a fair command of English and Mandarin. These are the 2 languages most frequently used in Singapore. To meet this need, volunteers from the Cathedral’s Myanmar Worship Service and English Services, work to conduct classes for the teaching of English and Mandarin.

These classes (Newcomers, Beginners, Intermediate and Advanced) are held weekly at the Big Tent on the Cathedral grounds from 11am to 1pm and they have been on-going for several years. Lessons are taught free of charge. With the introduction of BMW (see page 6), the enrolment has significantly increased as more people come to know of this ministry.

Besides improving on their language skills, the participants (many of whom are not of the Christian faith) gather monthly for birthday celebrations and a lunch (Myanmar menu). Organized by the EMT Team, these gatherings are very meaningful to those who are so far away from home.

In September this year, after the birthday song was sung and a prayer was said for her, a domestic helper who had been raised in an orphanage, broke out in tears and hugged her teacher. It was her first birthday celebration ever.

The 289 Fellowship of the Manger serves communities in Batam. The name is inspired by 2 Corinthians 8:9 - “For you know the grace of our Lord Jesus Christ, that though he was rich, yet for your sake he became poor, so that you by his poverty might become rich.”

289 started in 2009 with a children’s ministry and food distribution for the poor. The Batam Food Distribution Ministry team visits villagers every two months. 289 works closely with two long-term Indonesian partners, Gereja Anglikan Indonesia and Peduli Bangsa.

In 2016, 289 went beyond rice distribution to focus on two villages, Baloi Kolam and Kampung Nanas. Here, many people live in slums; they lack proper sanitation and clean water. Most villagers forage for materials for recycling, with families typically earning less than S$100 each month.

289 ventured on a long-term plan involving children’s programs, building new wells, as well as providing funds for medical treatment, milk and food for children and babies. In Baloi Kolam, where we serve 500 families, a parents’ seminar has also been conducted. In Kampung Nanas, 289 helps some 100 families with medical care, financial assistance, and built a water tank to provide clean water for about 100 households. The project was completed in April 2017.

We also organized two fund-raising activities—the Corpus Christi concert in December 2016 and Christmas@Cathedral in December 2017—to raise funds for needy families in Batam.

In June 2018, a joint project with Kampung Nanas villagers was started to recycle old clothes. The villagers repair and sell used clothes so that they can be more financially independent. Cathedral members have been most generous in donating their used clothes.

289 also plans to help the villagers make use of their baking and cooking skills and raise funds through the sale of their famous Kek Lapis, Keropok and other Indonesian delicacies.

289’s plans include:Survey the skills required and jobs available, and train villagers so they can get better jobs. Help local partners and pastors to nurture villagers in Christian discipleship, and improve the children’s ministry to teach children about God.Raise the villagers’ standard of English with the help of volunteers to teach the language. Provide spiritual support through prayer and

bring them to a deeper understanding of God’s love.Improve the community and surroundings by providing them with clean water, good sanitation and nutritious food.

HOW YOU CAN HELP:Join a weekend mission trip to Batam and help with food distribution, children’s ministry program, teaching English and livelihood training.

Project Khmer H.O.P.E. was set up by St Andrew’s Cathedral in 2000 in Cambodia. Its objective was to meet the social and economic needs of the poor and needy, where 30% of Cambodians survive on less than US$1 a day.

With a population of over 15 million people, where 95% practise Theravada Buddhism, there are 43 different ethnic and racial groups, and quite a few remain unreached by the Gospel. In her recent history, Cambodia faced enforced hardship and starvation under the communist Khmer Rouge regime that caused the country’s economic, manufacturing, education and healthcare systems to come to a standstill.

Today, PKH is an international non-governmental organisation working in collaboration with the Cambodian Ministry of Social Affairs, Veterans and Youth Rehabilitation. It operates from 3 PKH

Centres and a PKH English School in the Province of Kampong Speu.

PKH provides residential vocational training for youths to equip them with jobs in the hotel industry and the engineering and construction sectors. PKH also enables poor children who cannot afford schooling, to be educated and taught English.

Each year, PKH works with a total of about 600 youths and children, many of whom have come to faith in Christ; an average of 60 youths are water baptised each year.

The Suoy are an Unreached Peoples Group in Cambodia; PKH actively serves this community by providing more than 300 tribal Suoy children with education, meals, tuition in English and Bible knowledge. This ministry has enabled many Suoy villagers to know God’s love and to believe in Jesus Christ.

CORNERSTONE CENTRE(CORNERSTONE IN THAILAND)

Nestled among the dormitories surrounding King Mongkut’s Institute of Technology Latkrabang (KMITL), in Thailand, Cornerstone Student Centre offers KMITL students a space where they are always welcome. This Centre is about 12 minutes by road from Bangkok’s Suvarnabhumi Airport.

English conversation lessons conducted free of charge in the afternoons, draw those who want to improve their speaking skills, and just to hang out after hours with board games and new friends. Volunteers have much room to build friendships with the students and seek opportunities to talk about the Christian faith.

Benz, a KMITL graduate and former student in Cornerstone, now serves as the Administrator of the Centre. He said, “The first thing that stands out to the students who come here is that we’re teaching English for free. In Thai culture, we’re raised to think that nothing in this world is free. As an admin here, I always get asked why we do this for free. When I first came as a student, I just wanted to speak more English. I kept coming back because of Pastor Andrew; I like to talk to him. Christians are different in the way they think and

in the way they see the world. I was also impressed by the teachers here, because they’re around the same age as me, but they left their jobs to come here to teach. I wondered why they’d do that. When they mentioned that God sent them here, I was shocked, because I’d never heard of God before. I had a lot of questions, like: how do you know that God told you to come here? How do you hear him? I think it’s their sacrifice of time to teach here, receiving nothing in return, that first intrigues students and prompts questions about the faith. Many new believers came out of my cohort of students who are now leaders serving in church. I’m believing in faith that Cornerstone can be a centre where young disciples of Christ are raised.”

How you can be involved: If you are confident in teaching conversational English and keen to build relationships with tertiary students, come and volunteer your service for 2 months or more! Alternatively, if you have life or professional skills to offer that might be useful for undergrads, consider volunteering short-term to train or conduct special workshops.

The mission trip to Lombok was put together as a result of a series of earthquakes (at the time of writing in September 2018 - 6 recorded earthquakes, ranging from 5.2 to 7 on the Richter scale) that struck throughout July and August 2018.

Destruction on that Indonesian island was widespread with many villages almost completely flattened. Fatalities stood around 400 to 500, with scores more injured, and millions displaced from their homes.

Besides building a lasting relationship with the locals, the aim of the mission, organized by ACROSS, was to start a children’s ministry there. The psychological needs of the villagers are often overlooked in crisis relief work as initial efforts focus mainly on medical aid, reconstruction, and distribution of essential items. Little attention is paid to the psychological trauma that these villagers have gone through, especially if they had witnessed loved ones perish or injured in the crisis.

Hence, the children ministry was to provide a platform for the children to express their emotions and fears, as well as to keep the children engaged in meaningful activities with a view of a long- term children’s program initiated within the village.

Throughout the trip, I was struck by a sense of helplessness that many villagers displayed. After a

series of 6 earthquakes, one after another, it is understandable that the villagers were unable to foresee a future and they live their lives day to day, without a glimmer of hope.

The inevitable question that one would often ask is “Why, God?” That answer may never come, but instead, we should focus on asking “How, God?”. How can we help them, how can we reach out to them?

ACROSS (Anglican Crisis Relief Outreach & Support, Singapore) is a crisis relief ministry of the Missions Board of The Diocese of Singapore. It aims to offer a Christian response to the people affected by natural crisis (e.g. earthquakes, tsunamis, typhoons, severe winters, droughts, etc).

Community Improvement Training (CIT) is a work of the Deanery of Nepal. Since the devastation caused by the 2015 earthquakes in Nepal, the Deanery has embarked on a rebuilding initiative known as Project Taja Asa (Fresh Hope in Nepali). Project Taja Asa, amongst other things, aims to enable fresh hope in communities by encouraging human-centric resilience through development of community leadership teams in CIT workshops.

The work involves teaching leadership and skills such as disaster preparedness, first aid and evacuation planning to various villages around Nepal. Participants of the CIT workshops have found these skills extremely useful and applicable to their lives, as most of them are located in areas that require at least 2 days’ trekking to access. With these skills, they are able to be the first responders in an event of a disaster.

HOW YOU CAN HELP:This work requires CIT facilitators who are able and willing to trek for at least half a day to the remote areas of Nepal and stay in the villages to conduct the training. Project Taja Asa needs people to conduct these workshops, and training will be provided to facilitators.

Koabike Sok Chin (née Lim), who has a long association with the Cathedral, is a missionary who serves with the Summer Institute of Linguistics (SIL), Togo and Benin of West Africa, a sister organization of Wycliffe Bible Translators, in reaching Africans for Christ. She left Singapore in 1987, doing French studies in France before arriving in West Africa’s Togo in 1989, where she joined a Moba language team to do translation, literacy and Scripture promotion work.

In 1992, the team began translating the New Testament into Moba. The work was completed in March 2008, when the Moba New Testament was printed, sold out and reprinted. By that time, Sok Chin had married Togolese Joseph Koabike, the main translator in 1995. Asked to take up other responsibilities after the project, the couple now serve together in Togo and Benin. Both are involved in training consultants: Sok Chin serves as a literacy and education consultant as well as training coordinator, while Joseph is a translation consultant and coordinator for more than 20 translation teams. He encourages the teams to move towards their goal of having the Bible in their language. They have a 6½-year-old son, David.

Some of the exciting things Sok Chin and Joseph have been able to do in Mobaland to provide extensive evangelistic tools for local churches include the composition of 127 Scripture verse songs using traditional Moba music, a Christian newspaper with testimonies and teaching, and the recording of the Jesus Film in the Moba language. They have also come up with an audio

recording of the New testament in Moba on Proclaimer players, which are used by more than 100 groups in towns and villages.Another great tool that has helped to stimulate and assist new literates in Moba is a smartphone app that highlights, phrase by phrase, Bible text as it is read. Today, all Moba-language materials, from books and videos to songs and testimonies, are available at www.muaba-benn.com.
