It wouldn’t be possible to meet the needs of 2,700 hungry seniors and seriously ill adults without your generous support.

Although space doesn’t allow us to print all donors’ names, every contribution is greatly appreciated and immediately put to work delivering food and love to those in need. l

If you want to help create a future where no senior in L.A. goes hungry, please contact Daryl Twerdahl, Executive Director of Development at (213) 484-7112 or [email protected].

More than 500 guests attended An Evening on the Beach, hosted by Audi. The August event at the Jonathan Beach Club featured renowned L.A. chefs preparing signature dishes and noted vintners sharing their wines.

The event benefitting St. Vincent Meals on Wheels raised over $156,000—enough to deliver more than 19,000 meals to shut-in L.A. seniors. We express our deepest thanks to our chef partners, wine and spirits partners, sponsors and guests. l

Our community partner L.A. Kitchen takes healthy food from local farms and produce wholesalers that would otherwise go to waste, and uses it to empower, nourish and engage the community.

While their new facility is being completed, they’re using St. Vincent Meals on Wheels’ kitchen to train Chef/Nutrition Advocates. The 15-week course emphasizes culinary expertise, nutrition education and food-justice advocacy.

LA chefs also work with students to train them and to develop new

dishes for our clients that are tasty and healthy. The students include youths who have aged out of the foster care system and older adults returning from prison. Course graduates will be part of L.A. Kitchen’s staff when their headquarters opens in January 2015.

The food prepared by L.A. Kitchen supplements the 4,000+ meals St. Vincent Meals on Wheels delivers each day. This will save us an estimated $50,000 on food in 2014, while adding more fresh produce to clients’ meals. l

In MemoriamCarla Laemmle, a meal client and

beloved ambassador for St. Vincent Meals on Wheels, passed away in June at 104 years old.

Carla enjoyed our meals for 24 years. She credited her health and longevity to the good nutrition she received.

She led a fascinating life. The niece of Universal Studios founder Carl Laemmle, Carla moved to the Universal lot when she was 11. She appeared in silent films, most notably “Phantom of the Opera” in 1925, and was one of the last living links to the silent film era.

She spoke the opening dialogue in the first talking horror film, “Dracula” with Bela Lugosi, which made her a cult figure and led to appearances at horror film conventions.

In 1934, Carla was in a film written and directed by Ray Cannon. He was the love of her life and the couple spent 42 years together until Ray’s passing.

Ray was also a world-class fisherman and expert on Baja California and the Sea of Cortez.

With Carla’s help as companion, illustrator and typist, Ray wrote the best-selling book The Sea of Cortez, which greatly contributed to the development of Baja as a tourist destination.

Carla lived in a Hollywood cottage filled with photos of her life and career. She promoted St. Vincent Meals on Wheels in media appearances, including one where then-Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger delivered a meal to her at home.

We will miss Carla, and her sweet smile. l

gives me a stronger connection to my community, and feels like being part of a kind, compassionate and fun family. It truly is life-affirming work.

Will you join us? We need volunteer meal delivery drivers and runners. It takes four hours a week, and you’re welcome to a hot lunch too. Shifts are available Monday through Saturday from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.

Gina Riberi, Cuisine President

Volunteering makes you feel great as you brighten the lives of our clients. Plus, every volunteer shift saves us $56 that can be better spent on food.

If your company is looking for a team-building activity, consider a volunteer team. We also welcome students seeking community service hours.

To volunteer, please call Director of Volunteers Carol Martinez at (213) 484-7494.

I hope to see you at the kitchen or at one of our fundraising events soon! Thanks for making sure no L.A. senior goes hungry this holiday season. l

in Polytechnic High School to learn English and earned his degree while working at a vegetable stand.

Then came Japan’s attack on Pearl Harbor in 1942. In response, over 110,000 Japanese Americans were ordered to internment camps by the U.S. Government.

Masao spent six months at the Santa Anita Racetrack detention center before being sent to camps in Colorado and Northern California. Unlike many detainees who were housed with their families, Masao lived alone in the camps for 4-1/2 years.

Remarkably, when the war ended, Masao served the U.S. military as a translator and English teacher in occupied Tokyo. He was shunned by many Japanese citizens as a traitor, as he had previously been treated by the U.S. government, and returned to

Los Angeles as soon as his service was up. He wrote a book in Japanese about his experience of being persecuted in both countries.

Working as a gardener in L.A., Masao wanted to find a wife from Japan. He asked a friend in Japan to recommend any nice young women he knew and he began corresponding with Shizue. They married in 1963 at

the U.S. Embassy in Tokyo before returning to L.A.

Shizue, 92, is an artist with a serene smile whose colorful oil paintings fill their home. The couple have no children, or any nearby family to help, but a housekeeper comes once a week. They rely on their daily meal

deliveries for most of what they eat. And although they can’t walk much, they assist each other with the tasks of daily living.

When asked about the secret to their long and happy marriage, Masao said: “We love each other, we help each other and we get along. After all these years, we’re just two old souls who like being together.” l

In 1955, I officially became a Daughter of Charity of St. Vincent De Paul. It is a path the Lord invited me to follow. It was a call to serve others in need, physically and spiritually.

I met the Daughters in 1954 when I entered nurses’ training at their hospital in El Paso, Texas. I often joined the Sisters when they went into the community to minister to those who needed food, clothes, shelter and kindness.

This call to vocation was very strong, so I entered the Daughters of Charity on my 19th birthday, after a year of nurses’ training. I decided to become a dietitian because there was a need for one in our hospital.

I loved the kitchen, and as I was trained in management, I was next assigned to be the Director of Food Service at a 350-bed hospital in New Orleans. That meant I was “the boss.” At first I was scared and didn’t think I could do it. But Sister Carlos, my Superior at the time told me, “You have just been educated, and God will give you the grace you need to do the job—just go do it!”

And with faith and trust in God, I learned that I did know what to do and loved being “the boss.” I still do. You can get so much done quickly and make changes to improve quality and efficiency.

The Lord has guided me throughout these 60 years. I have had lots of joy and happiness in what I’ve been able to do—a wonderful vocation pathway. I am grateful, and ready for as many more years as God will give me.

About the Daughters...The Daughters of Charity were founded in

1633 Paris by St. Vincent de Paul and St. Louise de Marrilac. With 17,000 Daughters of Charity, our worldwide ministry includes education, advocacy for those living in poverty, immigration services, health care, foreign missions, pastoral and social ministries, projects for systemic change and United Nations NGOs. Our role in the world is to be joyful servants. To learn more, go to www.daughters-of-charity.com. Celebrating my 60th anniversary

Norma is 97 and lives alone in Hollywood. She can’t stand up to prepare a meal, and she has no family or friends nearby to help. Because her only food came from our noon meal delivery, Norma felt hungry and weak every morning…

When we learned Norma was hungry, we added breakfast to her delivery. After her first morning meal of yogurt with a bran muffin, a banana and hot coffee, Norma felt better, with newfound energy to start her day.

For just $1 a day you can create everyday miracles for L.A.’s hungriest seniors.

We invite you to join the Breakfast Club. Your $30 monthly Breakfast Club contribution—or a one-time gift of $365—will provide a year of nourishing breakfasts for the senior who needs you most.
