leaPsFifteenYear9 studentshavebeen selected tobe inthe Lawyers Encouraging and Assisting PromisingStudents (LEAPS) Program. In LEAPS we go everyfortnight after period 2 and we meet up with ourLawyers in the City. For the first LEAPS session wewere at the Department of Education and our otherLEAPSsessionswill alsobe rotating todifferentLawFirms.LEAPShelpsuswithconfidence,learningskillsand to see thebigpicture (future).WeenjoyhavinglunchandworkingwithourLawyers.

srC newsThis term, the SRC has been busy with variousactivities and projects, including the Stewart Housedrive, the SRC Zone meeting, and preparations forReconciliationWeek.

For the Stewart House drive, the SRC distributedenvelopes in which students were to submit a $2coin,whichwouldputthemintherunningforafamilyholidayworth$4000.ThemoneythattheSRCraisedwent towards the Stewart House Foundation whichdealswithprovidingrespiteandeducationalresourcestounderprivilegedchildrenaroundAustralia.

This term, Canterbury Girls was lucky enoughto host the St George Zone SRC meeting. It was anenjoyableandalsoeducationalevent.Thedaybeganwithsomeengagingice-breakersandalovelymorningtea.Wethenwentontodiscussingourownschool’sSRC programs which provided a helpful insight intohowwecouldimproveourownschoolcommunities.

Last week was Reconciliation Week, so tocommemorate this some members of the SRC, withthe help of student teacher Ms Scott, sent largepaperhands toeach rollcall.Each rollcallmemberdecoratedtheirhandwith illustrationsandmessagesexplainingwhatReconciliationmeanstothem.Thesehandsnowhangoutsidethelibraryforallmembersoftheschooltoview.

Prefect news term 2OurPrefectbodyhasbeen verybusy this termwiththeirfundraisingandeventcoordinationactivities.

They hit the ground running in the first week oftermat theAthleticsCarnival (pardon thepun!)withtheir BBQ, demonstrating some excellent leadershipskills in ordering, cooking, serving, cleaning andgenerallycateringtoover600hungrystudents!Theirenterprising methods resulted in some outstandingteamworkandfundraising!

Theirpromptandefficientchairingof theMondayassemblies has continued this term with a highlightbeingthedrawingofthefivekiloTobleronedraw!Theluckywinnerwasnotonlythehappyrecipientof thesupersized chocolate but also the collector of manynewfriends!!!

ThePrefectsalsohostedthe150Japanesestudentdelegation which visited our school in week 3. TheJapanese students and their teachers were veryimpressedbyourstudents’talentsinpublicspeaking,

dancing and drama, our beautiful school grounds,ourmanymodernfacilitieslikeourhalls,commercialkitchen,ourlibraryandLearningCentre,ourscienceroomsandtherangeofourcurriculumwhichincludesDance, Drama and Hospitality alongside the mosttraditionalsubjects.

SpecialpraisemustgotoAngelaMowhoaddressedthe group in Japanese putting to effective use herstudiesoftheJapaneselanguageandwhogracefullyparticipatedinaspecialteaceremonywiththem.

The Prefects’ assistance in selling gelato on thenights of our play ‘A Sting in the Tale’ added to thefestive ambience each night. It was a most popularactivityandmuchappreciatedbyall.

This week the Prefects are all busy studying andpreparingforthenextroundofassessmenttasksandtheirtrialsearlyinTerm2.

We thank them for their efforts and wish themsuccessintheiracademicendeavours.

Knockout soccerAfter a fortunate first round result the brave, fearlessandspiritedCanterburyGirlsOpenKnockOutSoccerSquadheadeddowntoJannaliforourmuch-anticipatedsecondroundclash.Wewerequietlyconfident,wehadtrained hard and the quality of players in our team,rangingfromyear7throughtoyear12,wasnoteworthy.ArrivingatJannalihoweverandseeingthatnotonlydidtheyhavetwofullsizesoccerpitchesattheirdisposalbut that each player on their team was a 6ft blondehairedjuggernaut,weknewthatthiswouldbeatoughone.Still,thisdidnotdeterusandwetooktothepitchrevvedupandreadyforatussle.

Andtussleiswhatwegot.Thefirst15minuteswerebruisingwithbothsidesgoingfullpeltatoneanother.However, what Canterbury lacked in size we madeup in skill and itwasn’t longbefore thefirst chanceof the game opened up for us. The daring HannahCazar won a free kick after she rounded her playerbutwasthrownmercilesslytothegroundfacefirstforherefforts.ThefreewastakenquicklyandAlicia‘theassassin’Ottogalislippedtheoffsidetrapandburntaholeinthebackofthenetwithablisteringshot.1–niltothegoodguys.

UnfortunatelythiswastobethehighpointinwhatsoonbecameaJannalidominatedgame.Theywerebig, theywere toughandat theendof theday theywerejusttoogoodforus.Wegaveitourall,butwhenthefinalwhistleblewallwehadtoshowforoureffortwas two knee injuries, a concussion and 16 tiredwarriors. I am incredibly proud of all of the playersinvolved and I congratulate to Jannali who look liketheymightgoallthewaythisyear.

2.Whilethemajorityofstudentscontinuetosupportfullschooluniform–andarefantasticambassadorsfor our school – there has been an increasingoccurrenceofincorrectuniformitemsoflate.Wouldallparentsandcaregiverspleasesupporttheschoolwith uniform? Issues requiring attention include:ensuring black leather shoes are worn every dayexcept Wednesday; making sure track suits areonly worn on Wednesday and no other day; thatjumpers are navy; that cardigans only be navy orblackorgrey;whilesloppyjoes,hoodiesetcarenotpermitted.Theschoolhasanofficialschooljacketwhich, as with all items, can be purchased fromLowesinCampsie.

white ribbon ProjectIn 2013, Canterbury Girls High School will beparticipating in the White Ribbon Australia Project.WhiteRibbonAustraliaisanon-profitorganisationandAustralia’sonlynational,male-ledprimarypreventioncampaigntoendmen’sviolenceagainstwomen.

OnFriday,31stMay,MrRobertsonandIattendedatrainingdayinthecitytolearnmoreabouttheprojectand its potential benefits to students in schools.Planning is currently underway to implement theproject in2014.It isenvisagedthat theprogramwillfocusonYear7and8studentsundertakingactivitiespromotingrespectandpersonalsafety.

Year 11 excursionOn28thMarchYear11and12StudiesofReligion,SocietyandCultureandChinesewentonanexcursiontoNanTienTempleinWollongong.

TheTemplewasorganisedandwelcoming,allowingus to enjoy different Buddhist experiences. After ashort welcoming by our tour guides, we were givena relaxing lesson inTaiChi and taughthow to greeta Buddhist Nun respectfully. We then split into twogroups for a tour of the Temple before lunch. Wewere shown a Temple dedicated to Kwan Ying, theBodhisattvaofMercy.

InsidetheTemple,thesymbolsusedandsomeoftheprayer ritualsexplained tous,suchas themanyarms she was depicted with, which represented hergiving and helping nature. We were then allowed tohaveabriefquestionperiodbeforeheadingofftoeatlunch. The lunch was vegetarian, as Buddhists arenot allowed to eatmeat, and consisted of fried rice,batteredeggplantandzucchini,abeanandtofudishandfreshapple.

Then we went to the Main Temple and learntmoreaboutsymbolismandbeliefsof theBuddhists.After getting the opportunity to ring the gongof Gratefulness, we had a discussion about themechanics of reincarnation, a complicated and notentirely explainable procedure. This concluded thetour,andafterfarewellingourtourguideswereturnedtothebusandthelongtriphome.

Cghs geography students excel in australian geography Competition

GeographystudentsfromCanterburyGirlstestedtheirgeographicalskillsandknowledgeagainststudentsfromallaroundAustraliainthe2013AustralianGeographyCompetition.

Around 75,000 students entered the Australian Geography Competition so the results give us an externalbenchmarkastohowourstudentsaregoingincertainaspectsofgeography.

WehaveanumberofstudentgeographersatourschoolwhoperformedtoaveryhighlevelintheCompetitionthisyearwith5studentsgaininghighdistinctions,6distinctionsand10credits.

We are working towards a one to one programbeing fully implemented in 2014 for Years 7-9. WearemakinggoodprogressonourplanstointroduceaBYODenvironmenttoCGHS

Given that equitywill still bean issuewehope tohavedevicesavailableforhirethroughtheschoolforstudentswhodonothavetheirowndevice.

We will provide to parents in Term 3 specificinformationinregardtohardware,systemandsoftwaresuggestions so that familieshave a6month lead intime toorganise this.Wewill alsohaveaprocess toensurenoonemissesout.

Zone Cross Country– tuesday 21 May 2013, scarborough Park ramsgateThere were over 40 students who represented theCanterburyGirls’ at Zone level inCrossCountry thisyear and from this group therewere someexcellentresultsacrosstheboard.

AspecialmentionshouldgoalsotothewonderfulYear 10 and 9 students who came and helped MsBurgess with the recording all day. Their work wasessentialtothesmoothrunningofthecarnival.

Wehadstudentsenteredinallagegroupsfrom12Yearsallthewayupto17Years,aspecialmentiontoCecilia Wu, our only Year 12 who came and addedvaluableschoolpointstotheopenagegroup.

We have been sponsored by the Sea LifeConservationFoundation for thewaterbottle fillingpost on our site. Our students are launching aSustainability campaign “Postcode 2193 – Plastic Water Bottle Free”.
