DV formatWhether your need is broadcastproduction or simply the very best picturequality, the mini DV format delivers morethan 500 lines of horizontal resolution –nearly a 25% improvement in picturequality over the best analog formats. Thetape formulation is advanced to lastlonger and even withstand repeated usewithout failure, virtually eliminating dropout and delivering higher output and lessnoise.

IEEE 1394 (DV Terminal)The XL1 is equipped with a DV terminalthat conforms to IEEE 1394 for digitaltransfer of video and sound, in addition toregular video and audio outputs. It takesjust a single digital cable to edit, copy andrecord your video virtually free fromgeneration loss in image and soundquality.

Achieve Super HighResolution Alongside SuperLow Light Capability

3CCDThe XL1 maximizesthe capability of theDV format by using a3CCD system with a separate CCD foreach primary color (red, green, blue). Abeam-splitting prism precisely separatesthe lightpassingthrough thelens intoindividualcolorcomponents, and each issent to itsown CCD. This process achievesoutstanding detail with highly accuratecolor reproduction suitable for thedemands of the high-end production field– wide dynamic range, low color noise, natural color resolution and low aliasing.

Pixel ShiftCanon solvescommon shooting dilemmas with a largerpixel size and the process of Pixel Shift, which gives wider dynamic range, betterlow light, reduced vertical smears, andhigh quality still images without sacrificingthe highest resolution.

Super low LightThe XL1 incorporates three CCD imagesensors, each with 270,000 pixels, specifically designed for freedom whenshooting under extremely low lightconditions. The size of each pixel is 72square microns. That's 150% larger thanthe pixel-size on comparable models. Theresult is an overall 4dB improvement(approx.) in sensitivity .

The Process of Pixel ShiftHuman eyes respond best to green. Thegreen component of a video signalcontains 60% of the picture detail whereasthe red and blue components compriseonly 40%. We have physically shifted thegreen CCD the equivalent distance of 1/2

pixel horizontally from the red and blueCCD, then electronically shifted the

green signal 1/2 pixel vertically. Why has Canon done this? Shiftingthe green CCD increases thesampling points, resulting in a rivalfor 410,000 pixel CCD systems interms of resolution, while providing

numerous advantages. It respondsto the demands for the highest DV

picture quality, combined with exceptionallow light, wider dynamic range, minimalvertical smear and superior digital stillimages.

Vertical Smear ReductionShooting subjects in extremely brightconditions is handled up to professionalstandards with the XL1. Vertical whitestreaks from bright light sources aregreatly reduced.

Just as Canon's Hi8 camcorders haveset the standard time and again, theXL1 is Canon's new flagship camcorderand the product that defines the leadingedge of Digital Video.

Magnesium Alloy BodyThe XL1 camcorder is designed tosupport extensive field use. Its chassis ismounted in a single, durable magnesiumframe to provide overall strength andprotection from external shock – blendingtwenty times the durability of ordinarycamcorder bodies, with countless timesthe style.

Multi-View FinderWhatever your position, the findercomplements your point of view. Slide thehigh-resolution (180,000 pixel) color finderacross to suit your individual line of sight –whether you use your left or righteye – and move from close-range to open-range at theflick of a switch.

Top Grip With RecordingControlsIn addition to the normal side grip, the XL1features a carrying handle complete witha duplicate set of recording and zoomcontrols to better meet your individualrecording style, as well as being ideal forlow-angle recording.

InterchangeableLens SystemA super-flexible system with anunbeatable range. XL1 maximizes youroptions via the new XL mount system, fora potential focal range of between 24 and2160 mm, made possible through the useof XL and EF (camera) lenses.

SuperRangeOptical Image StabilizerUntil now, optical image stabilizers haveused solely a gyro sensor to detectcamcorder vibration (the data from whichcontrols a vari-angle prism thatcontinuously corrects the path of theincoming light). SuperRange goes onestep further by examining the image afterit is received by the CCD, and detectingany low-frequency vibrations missed bythe gyro. This data is fed-back toaccelerate and refine the movement of thevari-angle prism. This greatlyimproves performance for lowfrequency vibration, resultingin the most advanced opticalimage stabilization availabletoday.

3 Shooting ModesThe XL1 has three shooting modes toaccommodate any of your recordingneeds.

(1) Normal Movie ModeBy merging Canon's unique optics with3CCD (with pixel shift technology), theXL1 delivers recordings of stunningresolution and color rendition –some of thebest video images ever seen outside ofthe TV studio. This is the video recordingmode for normal use.

(2) Digital Photo ModeTake more than 500 brilliantly clear stillpictures on a single tape (in SP mode). The photo mode further distinguishes XL1by capturing extremely high resolution stillimages. The camera records the stillpictures for approximately 6 seconds, aswell as recording the sound for yourverbal notes or narration.

(3) Frame Movie ModeThis Frame Movie Mode captures exciting,high-resolution frame still images by usingPixel Shift technology. It can record anincredible 30 frame still images a second– continuously – and effectively eliminatesmotion flicker by capturing a full imagewith every scan. Because you areshooting continuously, you need neverworry about missing a single moment.(Use Normal Movie mode for standardvideo shooting.)

Photo SearchSearch through your still images, quicklyand easily, wherever they are on a tape.

Programmed AEPuts advanced recording techniques atyour fingertips to ensure great results invarious shooting conditions. There are sixprograms in all, giving you the balancedcontrol that you have come to expect fromCanon.

Shutter-priority/Aperture-priority (Tv/Av)The new Tv and Av modes permit easyoperation while retaining the creativeimage controls commonly found onCanon's 35mm SLR cameras. In the Tvmode, you select the shutter speed from1/60 to 1/15000 of a second and the XL1will automatically set a matching aperture. In the Av mode, you select the aperturefrom f/1.6 to f/16* and the XL1automatically sets a matching shutterspeed.16X Zoom

Optical Image Stabilized16X Zoom Lens (asstandard)An optical 16X Zoom (32X Digital) isincluded as standard with the XL1 –theworld's longest available lens for a DVcamcorder. It resolves over 600 TV linesto give an extraordinarily sharp image. Byexceeding the DV standard of 500 TVlines, the Canon lens delivers greatervisual "sharpness" through its highersensitivity in the all important 100 to 250TV line resolution area. It is fitted with avariable angle prism for imagestabilization, has an ND filter, manualfocus and zoom rings, plus a push AFfunction. You can also boost the power ofXL lenses, with no loss of imagesharpness, by attaching the 1.6X Extender(optional) between the XL lens and theXL1.

EF AdapterAnother valuable accessory is the EFAdapter that fits onto the XL1 to allow youto use Canon EF lenses*.

3X Super Wide-Angle ZoomAn optional 3X wide-angle zoom lens willalso be available (Summer 1998) to givean approximaterange of 3.4 –10.2mm (35mm filmequivalent of 24 –72mm).

Manual ControlIn addition to Tv and Av operation, theXL1 offers a complete range of manualcontrols, ideal for challenging situationsand more creative recordings. In particular, there is complete freedom toset the exposure at any combination ofshutter speed and aperture levels. Set thegain manually to five preset levels rangingfrom -3 to +12dB. Set the white balancemanually, or choose either the indoor oroutdoor mode. Shift the exposure by up totwo stops around the automatically setlevel.

Slow ShutterWhether your aim is a "streaming"background when panning, or perfectlow-light recording, you can choose fromthree slow shutter settings –1/30, 1/15 and1/8 of a second.

SLR-StyleFlash PhotographyAttach a Canon Speedlite E-TTL flash(380EX) using the optional FA-100 FlashAdapter to use the XL1 for flashphotography, just like you would with anSLR camera. The camera sets the flashduration, sending out a pre-exposure flashto ensure correct exposure before themain flash is sent out.

Zebra PatternReveal areas of overexposure, usingthese diagonal stripes to guide you whensetting the aperture and shutter speed.

MicrophoneThe XL1 comes complete witha highly sensitive microphone, that givesexcellent performance in terms offrequency response.

Four-ChannelDigital Audio SystemThe XL1 listens harder than any othercamcorder, by offering three digital audiomodes (16 bit for the highest soundquality, and two 12 bit modes) and bybeing the first camcorder to offersimultaneous recording on four channels. What is more, you can output each signalcompletely independently too!

Self-timer Digital Fader Headphone Terminal (with level adjustment) Video and S-video terminals for analog output. LANC Terminal LP Mode Wide Screen TV Effect Remote Control with Jog/Shuttle Dial Lithium Ion Power Supply

Prepared for Balanced-typeMicrophonesThe optional MA-100 MicrophoneAdapter/Shoulder Pad (with XLRconnectors) allows you to use balanced-type microphones with the XL1. This unitalso lets you attach a commerciallyavailable wireless microphone receiverplus it functions as a shoulder pad foradvanced handling and control.

Time CodeThis precisely identifies each recordingdown to the individual frame, showing thehour, minute, second and frame in thedisplay. The XL1 uses a "drop-frame"system that is particularly accurate.

Data CodeData code recorded separately from thevideo signal allows you to display or hidethe date and time as required. In addition, you can choose to displayother data – shutter speed and exposuresettings – alongside.
