This past year we’ve seen Brexit, Trump and the rise of far right extremism, but what we did not see is the Society and Citizenship zone mobilising students to defend our civil liberties. I’m the current president of Goldsmiths College SU and I’m running to be your next NUS Vice President Society and Citizenship. I want to turn the Soc & Cit zone into a platform that enables our student volunteers, elected offi cers and liberation groups to win, not just at the ballot box, but by organising and winning in our communities.

For too long, it has been a zone that has functioned outside the student movement. This past year we’ve seen Brexit, Trump and the rise of far right

extremism, but what we did not see is the Society and Citizenship zone mobilising students to defend our civil liberties. It is time that changed.

The zone shouldn’t simply operate as another strand of NUS, picking up campaigns that don’t fi t into other offi cers’ remits. Its role should be to deliver on NUS’s mission and values to create a better society and education system for all.

I am running to redefi ne and rebuild a zone that is fi t to support a national movement of students, activists and change makers.

I want to transform society & citizenship. This year, NUS underwent a democracy review. In it, Society & Citizenship stood out. Not because of its’ impact on our movement, but because Students’ Unions across the country were unsure of its focus, role & remit. Many universities will have pension and investment portfolios that include fossil fuels, which have an impact on indigenous communities. It’s our responsibility to tackle institutions on their carbon footprint and contribution to global warming. We must secure a better future by acting now. Elect me and I will: • Join forces with national and local campaigns against

fracking, and ensure that students are at the forefront of this direct action

• Work with Fossil fuel Free UK and the Black Students Campaign to combine Divestment with Decolonisation efforts

• Safeguard, and give greater student ownership, to the future of the NUS Green Impact Unit

We live in a climate that criminalises the movement of those fl eeing the consequences of our global political and economic system; our efforts and solidarity should be extended to all migrants currently facing crisis and when freedom of movement and workers’ rights are under threat. Intersectional approaches to support are crucial for international students and refugees entering the country. I will:• Launch a national tour entitled ‘Know Your Rights’

workshops for international students • Support the NUS Women’s Campaign to launch a

campaign on reproductive rights and reproductive justice - including free and safe access to abortions for international students

• Work with the NUS International Students Campaign to launch a #Students4Migrants online hub with resources like scholarship proposal templates for refugees and asylum seekers

• Collaborate with grassroots organisations such as Movement for Justice and LGSMigrants to support migrant LGBTQIA communities and women in Yarlswood detention centre

tackling hate crime

NUS has a long and proud history speaking up for the rights of the marginalised, but with the rising threat of the far-right and rampant xenophobia, our students’ unions need far greater support and resources to confront hate and discrimination on our campuses and communities.• Work with the European Students’ Union to ensure a

coordinated cross-European response to the rise of xenophobia, anti-semitism and islamophobia

• Help Students’ Unions set up, and increase their visibility, as hate crime reporting centres for their local community

• Link up with grassroots organisations to create a network of volunteers and activists that will respond to issues surrounding discrimination on the ground

“Soc Cit needs be re-invigorated into a zone that communicates our values to wider society. Given Danny’s track record of creating change on his campus, i’m backing him to transform NUS into the social movement it needs to become.”

I’m backing Danny for NUS Vice-President (Society and Citizenship) because the student movement urgently needs a Society and Citizenship zone that can deliver a real fi ghting campaign against discrimination and harassment on our campuses and in communities. Danny has proven his ability to mobilize students on the streets and campaign to secure practical support for marginalised students his institution. Vote Danny for Soc & Cit!“
