It’s the traditional season to make promises to ourselves: how we’ll change our lives, what
we will achieve, what disciplines we will force on ourselves …
While each day is as valuable as another, taking stock of life at New Year’s is better than never taking stock at all!
In John C. Maxwell’s tiny book entitled, “Make Today Count,” he discusses the impor-tance of acting accord-ing to values. So this year, instead of New Year’s resolutions, I thought I’d take a look at some “New Year’s values.”
When one mentions values, warm, feel-good sentiments might come to mind — kindness, honesty, being nice to puppies. In the next few columns, I’ll suggest some less-exalted, but still important, values. The first one is the value of “persistence.”
You might refer to persistence as follow-through, responsibility, com-mitment, or just plain “showing up.” Folks who value persistence act differently than those who don’t.
Consider this decision: “I don’t feel great. Do I want to get out of bed and go to [work, school, or wherever it is that I have commit-ted to be]?” Putting the obvious “don’t spread infection” rule aside for a moment, your decision is based on a value. How prepared are you to do what is necessary to fol-low through on your commitments?
Persistence isn’t a glamorous value but it can make up for plenty of shortcomings. If you lack (or perceive that you lack) talent, skills, smarts… you may still be able to achieve your goals through persis-tence.
Granted, it would be easier if the universe would just align itself for your convenience, but when it doesn’t, being prepared to put in the dull, plodding work can often get you there. Even if it doesn’t,
persistence will definitely get you closer than if you don’t bother to continue.
Look around and you will see folks for whom everything seems to fall into place: they have loving re-lationships, good jobs, educational accomplishments, respect. See if you can detect the role that persis-
tence has played in their lives.
It’s persistence, for ex-ample, that has a young person forego expensive nights out with friends, eating oatmeal instead of going out for pizza, to meet his goal of saving the down payment for that first house.
It’s persistence that keeps a student (adult or child) rewriting their homework after class even if the notes still don’t make sense to them.
It’s persistence that is the sheer, hard work you do when you don’t feel like it.
Persistence is carrying on, one foot in front of the other, doing what’s necessary even when you can’t see any immediate, pleasur-able reward.
Mark Twain, Thomas Jefferson, and others are credited with coin-ing a phrase along the lines of, “The harder I work, the luckier I get.”
Few people run through life without stumbles or setbacks. The question of whether you get up to continue the race, so to speak, is largely connected with how highly you value persistence.
Do you hold persistence as a value? You can let me know by e-mailing me at [email protected]. If you prefer a non-computer method, you are also welcome to send me a note c/o the Lighthouse Log.

Catnip, also known as catmint, nepeta cataria, is an herb that can bring out new aspects of your feline’s personal-
ity. It can stimulate pleasure and play. Many cats go bonkers from a small whiff of the pungent leaves.
Nepeta cataria is a kind of mint. It is easy to grow and has the typical mint fam-ily square stem, coarse-toothed leaves and has small purple flowers. It usually grows to about three feet tall, but I have grown it in my Lunenburg garden to a height of six feet. My cats actually eat the leaves and so I am careful to fertilize it with organic compost only – no chemicals.
The plant is hardy to Zone 3. You can buy plants from a nursery or grow it easily from seed. It is best to grow it in a spot where it won’t be “prematurely harvested” by your cats or neighbourhood ones. I once planted one in my front garden and when I got up in the morning, the catnip plant and the flow-ers around it were flattened. Obviously I provided the favours for a great cat party.
Once cats smell the herb, they will often start rubbing themselves against the plant or leaves and stems. They will roll on the ground, pawing and licking it. Many, like mine, will chew and sometimes swallow it. After interacting with the plant, common be-haviours include drooling, sleepiness, anxi-ety, extreme playfulness or running around and purring. Some may become aggressive and start growling or hissing. The initial response period is usually between five and 15 minutes and the kitty will be sensitive to some more nip after about two hours. Some cats, however, don’t care about it at all and kittens aren’t generally affected by it until six to nine months of age.
The active ingredient
in catnip is called nepetalactone. It enters your cat’s body through the nose and binds to his olfactory receptors. Nepetalactone triggers the part of the feline brain that also responds to pheromones — happy hor-mones. Some cats do not have the gene that makes them sensitive to it and so, no matter their age, will never react to it.
Catnip is thought of as a feline drug and some cat owners wonder if it is safe to give it to their cat or whether they could give too much. Small doses do no harm and can be good for your cat’s emotional health as it
can help him relieve stress and nervous energy. If catnip causes your cat to become ag-gressive, do not keep giving it to him. He could hurt a fam-ily member or other house-hold pet.
You may notice that some brands of catnip are much cheaper than others at the store. Sometimes catnip is diluted with straw or is grown with chemical fertilizers. Buying an organic name brand at a higher price may get you a better quality, safer product and growing your own will guaran-tee a fresh product for your cat and you will know how and where it was grown. My cats also love it fresh picked instead of dried.
Treat your kitty to a little catnip and maybe he will treat you to a show of some funny antics.

Stein’s Law and cholesterol-lowering drugs
Stein’s Law says that if something can’t go on forever, it has to stop. It’s just a matter of when.
Stein’s Law always wins, but when will this law stop the increasing number of North Americans taking cholesterol-lowering drugs (CLDs)? Surely enough is enough.
Recently the American Heart Associa-tion and the American College of Cardiol-ogy issued new broader guidelines that in one fell swoop have added millions of healthy people to the list of those who will be prescribed CLDs.
Dr. John Abramson at The Harvard Medical School and Dr. Rita F. Redberg, cardiologist at the University of Cali-fornia, report that these guidelines will primarily benefit the pharmaceutical in-dustry, not patients.
Abramson and Redberg state this deci-sion would be good news for patients if CLDs offered meaningful protection from heart attack, and had few side effects, but history shows this is not the case. In
fact, the evidence is limited that CLDs prevent coronary attack or stroke in the major-ity of people. In addition, 50 per cent of those who have a heart attack have normal blood cholesterol.
I’ve warned for years about the folly of trying to change the physiology of cholesterol. It has taken eons for evolu-tion to determine our need for cholesterol, which is a neces-sary part of every cell wall. Without cholesterol we would all die. But now hundreds of millions of advertising dol-lars have turned it into the devil that’s causing coronary deaths.
Last year, just in Canada, doctors wrote 38 million prescriptions for CLDs. Surely doctors should be concerned about the long term effects of placing millions of people on these powerful drugs when it’s
been known for years that they have unintended consequences.
There is no better example of what advertising can ac-complish if pots of money are available to imprint “choles-terolphobia” into the minds of both doctors and patients. It’s a sad commentary on what has happened to medical practice.
Dr. James Wright of British Columbia’s Therapeutic Initia-tive always brings sanity to medical issues. He reports that 140 people would have to take CLDs for five years to prevent one heart attack.
It’s important to save one life, but at what price? A recent
study at the University of Texas showed that those using CLDs had a 27 per cent greater risk of developing cataracts. An-other study at the University of Waterloo found that these drugs increased the risk of cataracts by 50 per cent. The risk is
even greater for those who have Type 2 diabetes.
Last year the U.S. Food and Drug Administration issued a warning that CLDs could in-crease blood sugar, increase the risk of diabetes and cause memory loss. They should have added that CLDs can also cause transient global amnesia.
The prime example is Dr Duane Graveline a medical doctor and astronaut who, after being on a low dose of CLDs for three months, failed to recognize his wife or children.
Other studies reveal that CLDs are as-sociated with increased risk of muscle degeneration, violent deaths, liver and kidney problems and in some cases death. None of these complications are minor problems.
I’m sure that if any natural remedy was triggering these diverse complica-tions government authorities would im-mediately remove it from the market.
The question is, are CLDs needed? Fol-lowing a severe coronary attack, cardiolo-gists warned me I’d die without using CLDs. Rather, for the last 16 years I’ve re-lied on high doses of vitamin C and lysine as recommended by Dr. Linus Pauling. It was a risky decision at that time as there was no evidence that this combination could reverse coronary blockage.
Now, photos of arteries show that combined vitamin C and lysine not only prevents but also reverses blocked arter-ies. This combination powder known as Medi-C Plus is available at Health Food Stores. It’s a monumental discovery. But this research is collecting dust due to the closed minds of cardiologists who refuse to look at it.
Remember, I’m not your doctor and it’s not my intention for you to toss away your CLDs. Medication decisions can only be made by your own physician. But hopeful-ly Stein’s Law will soon end this massive drugging of North Americans with CLDs.
