Did you know that HBAR offers professional designa-tions through NAHB? This member service allows HBAR members to grow their professional endeavors while their association is hard at work promoting the building industry. Education
through NAHB has always been available to HBAR members to increase mem-ber’s skill set and make them
more marketable. NAHB education is coming to Rich-mond this fall! On October 23, 2013, HBAR will offer the Builder Assessment Review (BAR) and Professional Re-modeling Experience Profile (PREP) assessment tests. These tests are the first step for builders and remodelers towards obtaining the prestigious designations of Certified Graduate Builder (CGB) and Certified Graduate Remodel-er (CGR). If you’re looking to take your career to the next level, con-sider sitting fort the assessment tests towards a CGB or CGR. You can choose from any of NAHB’s 13 profes-sional designations in building, remodeling, green build-ing, sales and marketing, and low-income housing tax credit. A NAHB Designation says a lot about you. Profes-sional designations offer excellent opportunities to im-prove your skills, advance your career, and be recognized for your commitment to professional growth. The BAR assessment offered at HBAR on October 23, 2013 for $95 (regular price $145) will measure your ex-pertise in five key areas of the building industry: Building Technology, Business and Finance, Project Management, Sales and Marketing and Safety. The PREP assessment for remodelers will measure your expertise in Marketing
and Advertising, Business Management, Estimating, Con-tracts Liability, and Project Management. Your results will show you the areas where your knowledge is strong-est, where it is weakest, and will determine the courses required for you to obtain your CGB or CGR. If you sit for the assessment at HBAR in October you have a chance to test out of those areas where your knowledge and experience is greatest. This will allow you to earn your CGB designation faster than ever before. Do you have what it takes to be a CGB or CGR? Let’s find out…If you are up to the challenge, you too can join the most prestigious club in the building industry. I would like to congratulate and acknowledge the current HBAR members listed on the following pages that hold an NAHB professional designation. You are truly an indus-try leader. If you would like more information on the BAR or PREP assessment tests being held at HBAR on Wednesday, Oc-tober 23, contact Craig Toalson at [email protected] or 804.282.0400

What do you get from being a member from HBAR? In the May/June 2013 Footings issue, I wrote about the membership benefit of ca-maraderie and having a “sense of us.” Camaraderie is being a part of something bigger that exists among friends and businesses with common interests. I still be-lieve that this is the single largest benefit that anyone gains from being a member of an organization. That said, HBAR leadership is constantly working to ensure
that you, the member and cus-tomer of this great organization can’t afford not to contin-ue your membership. Did you know that all HBAR members involved in the physical construction of a house, including surveyors, en-gineers, and architects are eligible to receive a Verizon Wireless discount of 22% off corporate calling plans? Al-so employees receive up to an 18% discount (15% plus an additional 3% discount if enrolled in online billing) on their individual plans! If you aren’t taking advantage of this great discount, please visit mynpp.com. If you have any questions or would like to have a Verizon business sales representative reach out to you, please call NPP at 800.810.3909 or email [email protected]. Did you know that your membership includes membership to the Home Builders Association of Virginia (HBAV)? HBAV is constantly fighting for our industry with law-makers and regulators, saving builders thousands. HBAV is extremely active in the adoption of the Virginia building code. Though HBAV is there for you, there are several other advocacy groups attempting to add provisions to the building code that will increase the cost of construction with no cost benefit to our member builders. In recent years, HBAV has had major success only allowing neces-sary code changes that are practical and cost effective to builders. According to U.S. Department of Energy, the
total construction cost increase for the 2012 IECC com-pared to Virginia State Code is: 2,400 ft² House: $2,138 1,200 ft² Apartment/Condo: $1,120 Building codes are made to protect public safety and health in the built environment, but they ignore the im-pacts on resources that the building community and code officials have. This one change has saved every builder in Virginia, $2,138 per house. Without your membership, HBAV would not have the resources to make such a sig-nificant impact. Because the building code and 2012 Energy Code changes are coming to Virginia in future years, HBAR has part-nered with DOW Building Solutions and Weyerhaeuser to hold an educational presentation that will focus on the 2012 IECC upcoming code changes how builders can in-corporate energy efficiency into their homes cost effec-tively. The seminar is FREE to HBAR members and is scheduled for October 15, 2013. Visit www.hbar.org for more information. HBAR understands that the building industry is very com-petitive and constantly changing. Many members are look-ing for ways to separate themselves from the competition and better their craft of building homes. HBAR under-stands this and is offering assessment tests for builders and remodelers on October 23, 2013 to start the process of obtaining their CGB (certified graduate builder) and CGR (certified graduate remodeler). Professional designations offer a way to separate you from the competition and prove that status as an industry leader. The assessments tests will be offered for a discounted rate of $95 (regular $145) for HBAR members. This column describes just a small sampling of what you gain from your HBAR membership. Our members are our customers and we value your participation and support more than ever.

The 62nd Annual Parade of Homes Returns in October
The Home Building Association of Richmond is proud to announce that the 62nd Annual Parade of Homes event will return to the Greater Richmond area in October. This event is the premier program showcasing the best new homes in the region. The Parade of Homes begins on October 5 and will run for the first three week-ends of the month. There will be 60 new homes and 1 remodeled home built by 27 builder members in this year’s show, and more than half are decorated models. This number of entries represents a more than 25 percent increase in entries from 2012, providing attendees even more new homes and trends to tour. “The Parade of Homes is the best chance to see the newest home building designs and trends up close,” said Rob Carter, 2013 HBAR President and builder with Southern Traditions Homes. “This event is a great oppor-tunity to tour new homes if you’re in the market or simply want to get inspired.” The homes are located throughout the Greater Richmond area including Counties of Chesterfield, Goochland, Hanover, Henrico, King William, New Kent, and Powhatan, and the City of Richmond. This is the best oppor-tunity to see every type of new home imaginable, showcasing the latest in designs, construction techniques, and materials, at prices ranging from the $170’s to over $900,000. Plus, you can take advantage of touring the remodeled home to see how you can modernize your existing home. The Parade of Homes, sponsored by George Mason Mortgage, will be held October 5-6, 12-13, and 19-20, and the remodeled home by Leo Lantz Construction in Henrico County will be opened October 19 & 20. Hours are from 12 p.m. to 5 p.m. and ad-mission is free. In addition to the scattered sites, the Parade of Homes will feature a local new home community each weekend with special events or incentives as well as new homes for your viewing:
October 5 & 6: Main Street Homes, Family Fun Day at Westerleigh Park in Chesterfield County
October 12 & 13: Gumenick Properties, Maintenance-Free Luxury at Grayson Hill and Monument Square in Henrico County
October 19 & 20: Viniterra, Special Incentives at Sales Center in New Kent County
The Parade of Homes® Plan Book and the website, RichmondParadeofHomes.com, will include detailed in-formation about the event and the individual homes on the tour, including home designs, floor plans and de-scriptions, detailed directions to each home, and a map. The magazine is free and will be available beginning Saturday, September 21 at area Martin’s and Kroger supermarkets, as well as at HBAR headquarters, 400 N. Ridge Road, in western Henrico County. RichmondParadeofHomes.com will also feature a linked map show-casing entries in a specific area and a special search by criteria section to make it even easier to find your new dream home. “The Parade of Homes is the perfect time to visit the best new homes in the Richmond region,” said Craig Toalson, HBAR CEO. “Mark your calendar now to tour the 62nd annual Home Building Association of Rich-mond’s Parade of Homes to see how your dream can become a reality.”

Recruiting new members to HBAR, HBAV, and NAHB is an activity recognized and rewarded through the Spike Club. Those who participate are called Spikes, and they are among the most valued members of the association. Member-to-member recruit-ment and retention efforts are the largest source of growth for the association and the NAHB federation. Spikes bring grassroots growth and stability. These efforts lend to the development of the general membership and our leadership pipeline, keeping the face of the federation true to that of our industry and the scope of interests we represent. Spikes are the membership leaders of
HBAR, building the voice, power and influence on every level.
