When it comes to baseball the last name Coleman is most commonly associated with Vince, an outfielder famous for stealing bases with the St. Louis Cardinals in the mid 1980s.

In Anthem kids growing up playing baseball will learn about a different Coleman.

On Sunday, during a ceremony attended by players and coaches from High Desert Little League what was formerly known simply as Little League Field One was renamed Coleman Field.

STAFF REPORT

The Desert Foothills Land Trust and the Town of Carefree came together to permanently conserve 60 acres of Sonoran Desert in northern Carefree last month.

The Town of Carefree used Open Space Development Fees totaling $280,000 to fund the acquisition of 30 acres of land, the landowner granted 10 acres to the Land Trust and another nearby landowner, Paul Van Weelden, donated an additional 20 acres to the Town.

The new preserve, dubbed the Carefree Heritage Preserve, is situated along a rocky wash and features sensitive archaeological resources, significant wildlife habitat and the open, rugged landscape characteristic of the

Upland Sonoran Desert. “The Land Trust had

the expertise to identify an appropriate property for Carefree’s first open space preservation purchase,” Carefree Mayor David Schwan said. “It was a pleasure to watch these two dedicated organizations as they worked to accomplished this significant acquisition.”

“The permanent protection of this important cultural resource has been a Land Trust goal for more than 20 years,” said realtor Mark Hazelton of Russ Lyon Realty, a longtime Land Trust advocate.

and members of the Daisy Mountain Fire Department. Board members from the Anthem Community Council also were in attendance.

“We’re here to celebrate Bill Coleman, for his 20 years of service and to celebrate the service of those just like him,” Boates said. “He epitomized courage and selfless concern for others.”

With the new scoreboard reading Coleman Field lit with Bill’s badge number, #0977 behind Boates, the Anthem Community Council president asked MCSO Captain Rich Burden to help unveil the memorial, a plaque which will be placed near a sidewalk leading up to the field.

The plaque reads, “Welcome to Coleman Field. Dedicated in honor of Maricopa Deputy William ‘Bill’ Coleman, who gave his life on January, 8, 2012 while serving and protecting Anthem.”

Toward the bottom it reads, “In valor there is hope.”

“I’d like to thank all of you for coming on this monumental occasion,” Burden said. “What a great day, a great gesture and a great community to make this happen. Bill will be here watching over us and America’s greatest of pastimes.”

Burden said in talks with Beth, she relayed that the couple spent plenty of time at Anthem Community Park watching their son, Connor, play soccer.

“He was a dad that was involved in his children’s activities, whether it was their

school work or sports,” said Burden in relaying a conversation he’d had with Beth. “He encouraged not only his own children, but other to find something of interest to be active with, to have fun with, but also to learn life skills from.”

Burden described Coleman as a man who loved his family and his community and someone who had a zest for life.

“He lived life for all it was worth,” Burden said. “He was a man you wanted in your corner. He never backed down and would consistently step up when things were tough. He was a mentor to a great many.”

In concluding his statements Burden predicted how Coleman would have reacted if he were present to watch Sunday’s ceremony.

“Bill could be loud and boisterous,” he said. “I can almost here him. He’d be saying come on now, that’s enough. Wrap it up and lets play ball.”

Following the unveiling Boates presented Beth with a replica plaque and then served as catcher as both of Beth’s children and then Beth got to throw out a ceremonial first pitch to christen the newly named field.

In concluding the ceremony Boates said he felt part of something special.

“Being able to do something like this makes me feel blessed to be part of this community,” he said.

STAFF REPORT

Two men and a teenage girl have been arrested in connection with a stolen car chase that began in Phoenix and ended nearly 20 miles away near Black Canyon City on Feb. 27 .

Phoenix police say 22-year-old Ryan Tsosie and 19-year-old Shane Johnson are being held on suspicion of auto theft while a 17-year-old girl was booked into a juvenile detention center.

They say Tsosie also is facing charges of felony flight, aggravated assault and numerous felony warrants.

Police say the yellow Honda Civic was reported stolen Feb. 26 in Tempe. It was spotted by police about 4 p.m. on Feb. 27 and a chase began.

The coupe diverted off Interstate 17 to avoid spike strips and took the Bumblebee exit, travelling along a two-lane dirt road until it slid off into a ditch.

Sonia Perillo, the Executive Director for the Desert Foothills Land Trust said Carefree contacted the land trust early in 2012.

“They had funds set aside for open space and came to us and asked about identifying some priority areas,” she aid. “It’s a pretty remote, rugged area, with steep slopes, a wash, lots of wildlife habitat as well as archaelogical resources. A lot of things made it an ideal area for preservation and the pieces all fell into place.”

The late Grace Schoonover, a supporter of the Land Trust and local conservation efforts, was also an early champion for the designated site. She shared her extensive archeological knowledge with Land Trust staff and volunteers over more than two decades.

The property is difficult to access and environmentally sensitive, so public access is not currently feasible. However, the Town of Carefree and the Land Trust are jointly developing plans for future guided access, and are working together

on a long-term stewardship and management plan for the property.

The Carefree Heritage Preserve joins the existing network of conservation lands in the North Valley, including a total of 660 acres protected on 21 Land Trust preserves.

“This new preserve, and the partnership between Carefree and the Land Trust, is truly a remarkable conservation legacy for our communities,” Perillo said.

The Desert Foothills Land Trust works with landowners, communities and partners to protect the most special and

important natural areas in the Arizona communities of Carefree, Cave Creek, north Scottsdale, north Phoenix, Anthem and New River. The Land Trust has permanently protected 660 acres on 21 preserves, many of which are open to the public for exploration and passive recreation. In 2010, the Land Trust was awarded accredited status by the national Land Trust Accreditation Commission – a mark of distinction in the land trust community. When Cactus Shadows senior catcher Taylor Decker surveys the field from behind the plate this season she probably can’t help notice how many new faces are looking back at her.

Decker, who has signed a letter of intent to play next season at Canisius, an NCAA-I program in New York, is one of only two starters back from a season ago and one of only three returners total.

A year ago Decker hit .484 with 16 RBIs for the Falcons. The .484 mark was the second highest on the team.

“She’s definitely somebody we’re going to lean on for leadership,” Falcons coach Danica Gianni said. “We’ve got a lot of young players that have club experience, but they need to adjust to the high school level. Taylor works real well with our pitchers. She’s also a strong kid, who will hit in the No. 3 or No. 4 spot in our lineup.”

A year after the program earned a state tournament victory during a 20-9-1 campaign in 2011, last year’s squad took a step backward, going 11-18 and missing out on the postseason.

Gianni said she is optimistic this year’s team will have a different attitude.

“I want them to play to win rather than play not to lose,”

the 11th year coach said. “I don’t want them to pull back because they’re worried about messing up. They should play for themselves and their teammates and not for me.”

Cactus Shadows senior Rickilee Niemeyer, is one player Gianni said she’s confident will be playing the right way.

After playing for Gianni early in her club career, Neimeyer elected not to play in high school during her first three years, before deciding to play as a senior. Despite missing the last three seasons, Gianni said she views Niemeyer as the team’s leadoff hitter.

“She’s been a pleasant surprise,” the coach said. “She’s looking good. She can slap. She can bunt well. She’s really fast and can play the outfield well.

You can tell she is out here because she loves the sport.”

Beyond her two seniors the coach returns Katie Paoli as her primary pitcher. Now a sophomore, Paoli won 10 of the team’s 11 games last year. She once again figures to see the bulk of the innings in the circle for the Falcons, but Gianni is pleased that this year she has some pitching depth as both sophomore Rachel Lowe and junior Katelyn Salmon had some success in the team’s season opening tournament in Tucson, which saw the Falcons split four games.

“Katie has the speed that the other two can’t match, but they both did well in Tucson keeping batters off balance,” Gianni said. “With multiple people to choose from I’ll have a chance to look at different strategies for getting through a game.”

Defensively Gianni said the

MARC BUCKHOUT MANAGING EDITOR

The Boulder Creek Jaguars are looking to a youth movement to restore some vitality to the softball program.

After a 4-17 season in 2010 Evah Taylor stepped down as the varsity coach. Tony Hamilton led the program the last two years, going 3-25 and 6-16-1 in 2011 and 2012 respectively.

Taylor, who is back leading the program thinks the drought since the last winning season, a 12-8 mark in 2008, is due to come to an end despite a roster that has only one senior and two juniors on the 12 player roster.

“I like this group,” she said. “They’re young and ambitious. The last few seasons the program has been down talent wise, but this group has talent, drive and heart.”

In the season opening Dorado Classic the Jaguars showed some of that promise by finishing fourth in a 28-team field last month.

On Saturday the Jaguars (6-6) followed up that strong showing by taking second in their own tournament, the 16-team Sun Blast Tournament, which ran Thursday – Saturday.

Before falling to Xavier 12-2 in the championship game, the Jaguars won four games in dominant fashion defeating Skyline 7-1, Window Rock 9-3, Cactus Shadows

10-0 and Bradshaw Mountain 10-3. It was the first time in the tournament’s history the Jaguars made it to the championship game of the event.

In getting off to a 6-6 start, they’ve already matched last season’s win total.

Leading the way has been freshman pitcher Brianna Binns.

“She deserves kudos,” Taylor said. “She hit her spots. She has a good energy. Even when things are tough she doesn’t get rattled.”

The veteran coach said Binns does a great job mixing up her pitches.

“We have fun messing with batters together,” she said.

The freshman agrees.“I love my changeup,” she

said. “When it’s working it

makes people look silly.”The freshman, who said she

came into the season simply hoping to make the varsity team, estimates her changeup is as much as 16 miles per hour slower than the speed of her power pitches.

And the freshman said she’s really excited about the team’s offense.

“You don’t feel stressed if you give up one or two runs, because we have girls that can really hit the ball,” she said.

Taylor said her team is averaging better than seven runs per game.

Sophomore Brice Phebus will be counted on to be a catalyst for the Jaguars offense.

“I think we have a really good young team,” she said.

Boulder Creek softball off to strong start

Marc Buckhout/The Foothills FocusBoulder Creek is looking for freshman Madison Daigneau to set the tone as the Jaguars leadoff hitter. Daigneau has used her speed to consistently get on base in the season’s early going. To view photos from Friday’s game go to facebook.com/thefoothills.focus.

Way Park on the west side of Anthem, the modification of the amphitheater in the Community Park, the addition of a lower level as well as racquetball courts to the Community Center. Although the dog park option in the Community Park was nixed a second option to put a dog park at Parker Court just east of I-17 off the Daisy Mountain exit remains on the table.

Before rendering their decision the council heard from numerous residents.

The one project that received the most comments was the dog park.

Sue Natale, who founded Anthem Loves Dogs, spoke in favor of a dog park in Anthem’s Community Park although she said estimates of more than $276,000 seemed well out of line.

“In my opinion the consultant’s assessment is inaccurate,” she said. “We got a fencing quote. It should be $25,000 and we’ve found people willing to donate fencing.

Our organization didn’t ask for all these extras of water fountains and benches. We just want a simple place to exercise our dogs.”

Natale, who received a rousing ovation from fellow supporters, concluded that members of her group had no interest in the Parker Court location.

Of the members of the public that came forward to speak Natale was in the minority. Anti dog park responses came in many forms aside from the exorbitant price. One was the presence of Jackass Acres, the dog park located on the frontage road east of I-17 between Anthem and New River.

Donna Gloshen reasoned that perhaps 99 percent of resident that would use a dog park in Anthem would drive to it.

“If that’s the case we have an award-winning dog park two miles from here,” she said. “I think there are a lot better ways to spend our money than duplicating something that is already here at the expense of some of these projects where we have vacancies of opportunities.”

Roger Willis pointed out that in 2005 Anthem Pets came to the council looking for land for a dog park and was rejected. They then regrouped and came up with an award-winning dog park on their own, free of public funding.

“It’s marginally inconvenient, but my dog seems to enjoy it,” Willis said. “We don’t think a dog park is necessary. If you elect to build a dog park it should be self sustaining with all costs covered by user fees, without the use of enhancement funds. It must have proper fencing and the ACC must be made safe from potential law suits. No group is entitled to amenities just for being persistent.”

Donna Kublin said the vacant space in the northeast corner of the park by the lake, which would become the dog park, would be a loss to many who enjoy the park.

“My husband San and I have lived here in Anthem for 11 years and my dog has been in Anthem for seven years, but we strongly oppose the area by the lake becoming a dog park,” she said. “It’s a nice quiet, relaxing area. It’s really the only adult

area in the park. A dog park would completely destroy the ambience that exists there. To build the dog park there would be taking away something we cherish, something that has been there since the beginning.”

The other project to get voted down was the play area near the skate park and roller rink at the northwest side of the park. While the project was relatively inexpensive compared to the other projects at just under $69,000 board member Holly Matson made the most compelling argument that it shouldn’t be a priority.

“The games that would go in here are going to be part of the updates at Liberty Bell,” she said. “There is no need to duplicate them when we haven’t even seen if these amenities would be used.”

With the remaining projects the council asked staff to work with the Fiscal and Resource Management Committee as well as the Planning and Community Development Committee to review and analyze the operating and capital cost estimates for the proposed projects and

impacts on property owner assessments and the balance of the Enhancement Fund. That analysis is expected to be brought before the board at the next council meeting, which has been rescheduled for 6:30 p.m., April 4. Meetings are at the Anthem Community Center, located at 41130 N. Freedom Way in Anthem.

Falcons infield looks solid up the middle with Decker catching and sophomore Hanna Caban at shortstop. Caban saw limited time on the varsity as a freshman, but the Falcons coach sees her stepping into a big role this season.

“Hanna has a gun at shortstop,” the coach said. “Offensively she has some power, so we’ll probably have her bat in the number four spot quite a bit.”

The corner infielders are a pair of freshman in third baseman Catherine Pierce and first baseman Emmerson Allen.

Pierce was injured in the team’s first game of the Sun Blast Tournament in Anthem on Friday, but the coach said she has potential to be a strong contributor both defensively and as the team’s fifth hitter.

The second base position figures to see a combination of Salmon and sophomore Abby McLean.

Joining Niemeyer in the outfield will be freshman Barbra Werner.

Overall the coach said she’s stressing teamwork and confidence.

“I’m looking to see some communication on defense,” she said. “We need to be aware of situations and be less robotic, be more instinctive. If

you have a chance to leave your feet and make a play do it.”

After opening the season with a 2-2 performance at the Canyon del Oro Tournament in Tucson the youthful Falcons struggled to a 1-4 mark in the 2013 Sun Blast Softball Tournament, which finished Saturday.

In looking at the player’s goal for the season the coach noted that very few tied their definition of success to stats.

“The main thing was to have fun together, have no drama and then win some games,” Gianni said. “We’re going to practice with game-like intensity. We don’t want things to be too fast when we get to the games. We won’t dog it between the lines. If you make a mistake pick yourself up and make the next play.”

After playing at Goldwater on Tuesday (results unavailable at press time) the Falcons were set to remain on the road, taking on Paradise Valley on Thursday. They play at Moon Valley in Phoenix on Tuesday before their home opener March 13.

Falcons home games are at 4 p.m.To check the Falcons complete schedule

“It’s raw, young talent, but we’re coming together.”

Phebus, who has already recorded a pair of highlight reel catches, one at shortstop and one in right field, said her two main goals are to try to be a leader for a squad with four freshman and five sophomores and to help the team get to the state tournament.

“It would be nice to build the program back up,” she said. “I think we’ve got a good mix on this team and we’ve got the coaching to lead us too.”

Joining Phebus in the middle of the lineup will be sophomore catcher Aubrey Ledbetter as well as Hillary Stewart, a corner infielder who can also pitch.

That trio figure to have a chance to drive in freshman Madison Daigneau regularly.

“She’s very fast,” Taylor said. “She’s a good slapper. A lot of times she’s down the line before the defense can even get to the ball.”

Sophomore Morgan Smith, the team’s number two hitter, has proven versatile.

“She can play the short game by bunting Madison along, but she also hit a grand slam home run in the tournament,” Taylor said.

Overall the coach said she’s looking for her team to bring an aggressive mindset to the field each day.

“I want them to take risks,” she said. “You can’t be a successful team if you’re scared to fail.”

Up next for the Jaguars are a pair of home games, as the Jaguars face Pinnacle on Friday and Mountain Ridge on Tuesday. Boulder Creek plays its home games at 3:45 p.m.

To follow the Jaguars softball team go to maxpreps.com/high-schools/boulder-creek-jaguar-(anthem,az)/softball/schedule.htm.

Marc Buckhout/The Foothills FocusBoulder Creek freshman Brianna Binns’s pitching led the Jaguars to a 4-1 showing in the Sun Blast Tournament. Hailed by critics as “a grand departure from the usual,” the Manhattan Piano Trio will perform at 4 p.m., Sunday at Pinnacle Presbyterian Church in Scottsdale.

The Trio has performed for audiences in more than 30 states, Australia and South Africa, in venues such as Alice Tully Hall, Merkin Hall, and the prestigious Ravinia Festival.

The Manhattan Piano Trio is an ensemble that embodies the borough that provides its namesake. These three musicians represent starkly different backgrounds, and yet connect on a fundamental level.

Wayne Lee, violinist, is originally from San Francisco; the group’s cellist, Dmitry Kouzov, grew up in St. Petersburg, Russia; and Milana Strezeva, pianist, is a native of Chisinâu, Moldova and a naturalized American. Dmitry and Milana are founding members of the group; Wayne joined The Trio in 2008.

In addition to their rigorous concert schedule, the members of The Trio are soloists and recitalists who have performed

internationally. They are also devoted teachers. Milana and Wayne maintain private studios in New York and Miami, and Dmitry is professor of cello at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. opinions and letters

The Foothills Focus encourages submissions from the public for the editorial page. Respond to the columnists, fellow letter writers, or let us know about something all to-gether different making an impact in your community. Submissions should be kept to less than 400 words. Send letters to [email protected]. If e-mail is unavailable, fax to 623-465-1363 or send them by mail to 46641 N Black Canyon Hwy, New River, AZ 85087. Include your name, your city and a phone number where you can be reached.

Notice to residents of the Desert Hills community, with Town of Cave Creek water service: If you have “livestock”, a pool/fountain, or solar panels, you will be receiving a letter informing you must install a Backflow Prevention Assembly or your water will be turned off.

This will cost our community millions of dollars.

The assembly is a poor design, subject to damage from the elements, traffic and vandalism. Copper theft is on the rise and with little street lighting in our community vandals could go nearly undetected through an entire neighborhood in minutes; turn off your water, cut out the copper; and it will be your responsibility to fix it. Installation, repair and annual inspection of these devices will cost our community millions of dollars, with no benefit. Basic installation of

a single unit is $500-$1000.Additional annual fees for

inspection begin at $80. In addition, you will be required to maintain and repair this unit.

Most of us should be completely exempt from this under the regulations they are quoting. R18-4-215 states that, “Unless a cross-connection problem is specifically identified, the requirements of this section shall not apply to single-family residences used solely for residential purposes.”

They are using the tactic of divide and conquer, by starting their assault on new residents in your neighborhood.

Now they are targeting livestock owners. Then they will come after you if you have a pool, fountain, or solar panels.

Next, they could target you for simply having landscaping.

We are not residence of Cave Creek, so we do not have a vote

or voice on their City Council. We must come together as a community to stop this.

Please join us at Peaks and Valleys Restaurant (711 E. Carefree Highway) at 6 p.m., Thursday. Representatives from the Town of Cave Creek Utilities Department will be

there to address our concerns and hopefully work with us on alternate solutions.

Please pass this information to your neighbor. This affects all of us. Until then, please note that they cannot turn off your water. They must prove that you have been properly notified

and given adequate time to

comply. These letters are not

sent by certified mail,

therefore they can not prove

that you have been notified.

They are hoping you will simply

cave in to their threats.

Barbara Middleton, Desert Hills

Can this marriage be saved?

From Maine comes this dispatch from a historian friend of mine, Alan Ginsberg, who, like many of us, has become discouraged by the wall-to-wall squabbling that has dominated Washington: “The rhetoric daily seems to grow more bitter, even destructive. The incessant arguing over money, money, money sounds like a bad marriage that is coming totally apart.”

Of course, he is right. The Great Public Squabble

of 2013 may not be helping the nation. But it is manifestly hurting the Republican Party. In the most recent Wall Street Journal-NBC News national poll, one original question captured that fact: “Based on what you have seen, heard or

read recently, do you feel that (fill in the blank) is emphasizing unifying the country in a bipartisan way or emphasizing a partisan approach in a way that does not unify the country?”

A plurality of Americans, 48 percent, believes that President Barack Obama is “emphasizing unifying the country in a bipartisan way,” while 43 percent see the president “emphasizing a partisan approach.” Not spectacular marks, but impressive when compared to the failing grades these same voters on the same question give to the Republican Party.

Consider these two numbers: More than one out of three (34 percent) of those polled self-identified as Republicans, but barely one out of five of the total (22 percent) feel that Republicans are acting in a bipartisan fashion to unify the country. That’s right, not even two-thirds of Republicans give their own party positive grades. By an

almost 3-1 m a r g i n i n s t e a d , some 64 percent of respondents see the GOP as following a partisan course “that

does not unify the country.”Republicans also trailed

Democrats on a whole series of questions about which party could better help the middle class or handle Medicare to which could better deal with the economy, immigration and taxes.

(Out of 12 issues asked, Republicans were given the edge on just three — reducing the federal deficit, controlling government spending and ensuring a strong national defense.)

Democratic pollster Fred Yang, who collaborated on the Journal-NBC News poll with Republican pollster Bill

McInturff, referring to the Oscar-nominated movie, observed that “Republicans don’t need a silver lining. They need a whole new playbook.”

This marks the end of good news for the Democrats. Compared to Republicans who currently suffer from the political equivalent of terminal halitosis, the D’s may not look that bad. But compared to themselves from four or even 12 years earlier, today’s Democrats look really bad.

In a 2001 Pew Research survey, the Democratic Party had a 60 percent favorable rating from voters. Eight years later, some 62 percent of those asked rated Democrats favorably. Yes, today only 33 percent rate the Republican Party favorably, which is awful. But in the most recent Pew poll, the Democratic Party gets favorable remarks from only 47 percent of voters, a significant 15 percent drop from 2009.

Disappointment and discouragement with Washington is followed by continued loss of confidence in the national government and its ability to be wise in policy, practical in action and prudent with the public purse. The climate in our capital city reminds me of what Grantland Rice, the wonderful sportswriter, once wrote: “For when the One Great Scorer comes to write against your name, He marks not whether you won or lost — but how you played the Game.”

But in the current atmosphere of political recrimination, bickering parties and diminished trust, Rice’s quote would read differently: “For when the One great Scorer comes to write against your name, He marks not whether you won or lost — but who gets the blame!”
