1 Foothills Piecemakers Quilting Guild Newsletter Greenville, South Carolina www.foothillsquilts.com October 2017 ~ Vol XXVII, No 4 Next Guild Meeting: October 5, 2017, at 7pm Grace Baptist Church Fellowship Hall 5020 Old Spartanburg Road, Taylors, SC Remember – Submissions are due to Gayle Brown no later than October 19, 2017 for the November newsletter. NOTE NEW EMAIL ADDRESS: [email protected] Happy Birthday in October! Linda Ligon 10/3 Janet Gregory 10/9 Theresa Wenstrup 10/11 Joanna Yost 10/14 Flo Rushton 10/15 Ruth Pollow 10/17 Kate Weston 10/17 Joyce Alexander 10/23 Refreshments If your birthday is in October, please bring an item for the Refreshments Table. Remember to indicate if it contains nuts or cinnamon. Membership We held our annual New Member Social at the September meeting. It’s a fun way to acknowledge all the people who have joined the Guild in the past 12 months and help them become more involved in the Guild and our many activities. The Guild membership has risen to 111, with 70 members in attendance at our September meeting. Our guests were Missie Coneybeer of Simpsonville, Merry-Beth Noble of Landrum, and Amanda Tyrpak as a guest of Gayle Johnson. Since our Member Directory will be published and distributed at the October meeting, the renewing and new members are only listed by name. All their information will be included in the new directory. Renewing members are Johnnie Parker, Pat Clare, and Darlene Morse. Welcome back!!! We also welcome our new member, Shirley Martin. Be sure to stop by the membership table at the next meeting if you have not picked up your membership card. Many quilt stores offer members a discount when you show your card prior to making a purchase. Membership Chairs Ruth Pollow & Dagmar Theodore President’s Message Pass it on! So, this weekend I drove to Tennessee where my kids grew up and live. I have two granddaughters, Victoria and Fiona, who I have been teaching, on and off, how to sew. Victoria is 27 and all grown up. Fiona is now 15 ½. The half is important to her. Anyway, Fiona made a quilt for the last FPQG quilt show. She was proud of her accomplishment and the ribbon she got. She was in the young people’s group, up to 15 years old. She gave the quilt as a Christmas present to her much younger sister who was 4 years old at the time and loves hot pink. There was some hot pink in the quilt. Little sister was much impressed with the present. Especially since “Sissy” made it for her. Some weeks ago I asked Fiona if she would like to make another quilt for the next quilt show we have in April. She immediately said yes. Then she said:” Can I please NOT be in the little kids’ group this time? Can I be in the adult group? “ “Yes, Fiona” I said, “you can be in the adult group now, you actually can’t be in the kids’ group any more.” “Oh, great!” she said. Oh, how the kids always want to grow up so quickly! I did too. But how appropriate that it should be the quilting group that first accepts her as an adult! It’s better than a lot of other choices. So, this weekend Fiona and I spent some quality time on starting another quilt. She had inherited my old singer machine when it was 25 years old. It was 30 this summer and broke down. She got a very inexpensive new one so she can still sew. Years ago I tried to get my own daughter interested in sewing while she was growing up, but she would have none of it. She still brings me her mending! But her daughter Victoria also has been taught how to sew by me, so I have had some success. Yeahh! When I think about the good times I have had with both of them, and the feeling of competency and accomplishment that they have gotten from finishing their projects, then I want to say to all moms and grands, ”Pass it on! “ Quilting and sewing is a great gift for you to give. And in giving you receive. Suzanne Brehm
