Outstanding transfer reputatiOn

Over the past 50 years, Foothill and De Anza have consistently

ranked among the top two-year colleges in the U.S. for outstanding academics and successful transfer to world-class universities. Because our programs parallel requirements for the first two years of university study, more than one-third of all American students earning a bachelor’s degree now start at a community college. In fact, your chance of being accepted by a prestigious university for your third year is much greater if you start at a reputable two-year college, like Foothill or De Anza, recognized for academic excellence and preparation.

Thanks to special articulation and transfer admission

agreements, as well as Transfer Center assistance, our students transfer to highly selective universities such as UC Berkeley, UCLA, USC, Stanford, Cornell, Columbia, NYU, Santa Clara and many more.

getting started is easy

We give all students an opportunity to earn a great

education. Our admission policy is flexible. If you have completed secondary school

with average results and have at least a 500 TOEFL (173 CBT/61 IBT) or 6.0 IELTS score, you can start your university education at Foothill or De Anza. No SAT or high grade point averages are needed. Foothill and De Anza are sister colleges that have the same high quality of instruction and services, and are just six miles apart. You can check out both campuses and apply to the one with the environment you like best.

affOrdable tuitiOn

The average tuition cost per year for international

students is around $6,000 USD. By completing two years of general education and lower-division major requirements at Foothill or De Anza, you can complete a bachelor’s degree at half the cost because you can transfer the academic credit

for these courses to any campus of the University of California (UC), California State University (CSU) and to many other public and private universities across the U.S., such as the University of Southern California, the University of San Francisco, Pepperdine and Santa Clara.

“It’s California! The weather is awesome. Foothill is so beautiful and green. There are a lot of gardens to study in, so you’re not just stuck in the library. Everything around you is helping you to succeed. School can be intimidating, it can be hard, but it’s just amazing how Foothill is here for you. It’s a dream come true. Heaven!”

nearby headquarters of Apple, Yahoo!, Google, HP, Oracle, Cisco, eBay, Adobe and many others that maintain close working relationships with both colleges. The multi-ethnic mix in the San Francisco Bay Area blends many heritages — Asian, Middle Eastern, Latin American, African and European.

Inexpensive bus, train and light rail serve Silicon Valley

and the colleges. With 300 sunny days and an average 21° C year round, we offer a truly Californian lifestyle. The varied geography and climates of Northern California invite students to enjoy both Pacific Coast beaches and mountain sports within easy driving distance. Located within a 3–5 hour drive are such jewels of America as Yosemite National Park, Los Angeles and Hollywood, warm beaches of

Southern California, Napa Valley and Lake Tahoe. If you are a sports fan, you can cheer for our popular professional teams — the 49ers and Raiders football, Giants and A’s baseball, Golden State Warriors basketball and Sharks ice hockey. The metropolitan city of San Francisco features unparalleled art and museum venues, fine restaurants and exciting nightlife.

“ De Anza represents the San Francisco Bay Area because it’s a diverse place in terms of people, food, places, religion, and new ideas. At De Anza, you can experience all this in a peaceful place. You can enjoy all the world here!”

fOOthill cOllege Life is quieter and

more reflective on the Foothill

campus. The parklike setting and award-winning architecture encourage close relationships between students and faculty. Recent news includes California

Professor of the Year award and creation of the nation’s first VMware Academy.

Built in 1961, the campus is located on 122 acres or 49 hectares in Los Altos Hills, a comfortable upper middle-class community near Stanford University.

The American Institute of Architects has twice honored Foothill for its outstanding design. It has been called “the most beautiful community college ever built.” Quarterly enrollment averages 18,000 students.

In 40 years De Anza College has educated more than 700,000 students.

More than 60 buildings are located on a beautiful and busy 112-acre or 45-hectare campus in Cupertino, and are a blending of Spanish and modern architecture.

Our students receive local, state and national honors for exceptional achievement. For instance, recently our math students scored No. 1 or No. 2 in the nation in the Student Mathematics League Competition. De Anza is a place for students to

excel. Quarterly enrollment averages 24,000 students.

On-campus suppOrt at bOth cOlleges

Our International Student Programs have multilingual,

caring staff on each campus to help you achieve your goals and make your experience in California as successful as possible.

Orientation & Guidance Program You will join other international students and participate in a required weeklong orientation course approximately one month before the start of your first quarter. During this week, you will get to know the

international staff who will conduct a comprehensive orientation covering issues from personal adjustment to planning for transfer to registration for your first quarter of classes. The friendships you develop during orientation week will provide you with support and companionship during your entire stay in the United States. Orientation attendance is mandatory.

English as a Second Language Program If you need to improve your English skills, each college offers a comprehensive English as a Second Language Program at six different levels of proficiency. You will focus on speech communication, grammar, reading skills, composition, listening comprehension, pronunciation and conversation. Generally, we require that you achieve a 61 (IBT) or 173 (computer-based

test), or 500 (paper-based test) TOEFL or 6.0 IELTS score to gain admission to either college. If your TOEFL score is between 475 and 499, you are eligible to participate in our Summer Intensive English Program during July and August. Upon successful completion of this program, you will be guaranteed admission to either college in September. This program is available only to students who intend to begin their studies at the start of our Fall Quarter.

Academic Counseling You will meet frequently with one of our international student counselors to ensure that you are making progress toward achieving your educational goal. These counselors are experts in their field and work exclusively with our international students.

Tutorial Services Our on-campus Tutorial Centers can help you achieve academic success by providing individual and group tutoring at no charge. Faculty-recommended tutors provide assistance for students enrolled in most subjects. There are also content-based workshops led by professional staff that provide additional instruction in many subjects.

Page 13: Foothill-De Anza International Programs

11 www.international.fhda.edu

Health Services On-campus Health Centers are staffed by a team of trained, qualified medical personnel who provide general health care services. Purchasing comprehensive health insurance that is available through the colleges is mandatory. Fees will be collected each quarter to pay for this coverage.

Computer Labs As you might expect in Silicon Valley, technology on both campuses is cutting edge.

Our computer labs feature hundreds of individual work-

stations offering both PC and Macintosh platforms, and all are networked with fiber optics for high-speed Internet access. The labs are open during day, evening and weekend hours so you can complete class assignments, and every student has free access to the Internet.

Housing Foothill and De Anza, like most community colleges, do not have dormitories. Students live either in homestays with local families or in apartments near the campuses, which they share with other students. We urge most students to think

seriously about living in a homestay for their first months in the United States. In addition to providing an affordable private room and meals, the program gives you the unique opportunity to immerse yourself in American culture by living with a host who is supportive of your educational goals. Foothill and De Anza work closely with International Student Placements (ISP), a private company, which provides placements with carefully screened local families. ISP can also arrange airport pick-up services. For details, access ISP online at www.isphomestays.com. ISP can also provide support in finding apartments. And, the on-campus International Student Programs Office provides lists of apartment complexes frequently used by our international students.

Additional Opportunities & Support Services Our colleges offer you a comprehensive selection of

support services to facilitate your success. These services include University Transfer Centers, Career Centers, Disability Resource Centers, Honors Institutes, Libraries and Media Centers; extensive online and video-based Distance Learning Programs; Math and Writing Centers; Pass the Torch Peer Study Teams; Student Success Centers; internships and other partnerships with many Silicon Valley companies.

Exclusive services for international students range from extensive staff support, with six full-time international counselors on each campus to monthly coffee hours, free tickets to Celebrity Forum, International Night and Lunar New Year celebrations, ice-skating and field trips around the Bay Area, International Student Graduation Reception, and more.

“ The counselors develop an educational plan, give you good advice and tell you what you have to do to stay on the right track.”

At Foothill and De Anza, we believe that your college

experience should also be fun! Joining a campus club, participating in student government, or playing on one of our athletic teams is a great way to enrich your academic experience, develop leadership skills, build achievements for a university transfer application and professional resume, and make lasting friendships.

Join a Campus Club There are more than 60 clubs on the campuses, including

Alpha Gamma Sigma Honor Society Asian Pacific Islander Club Black Student Union Business Club Environmental Action Club Film & Television Guild Gay-Straight Alliance Hong Kong Connection Indonesian Student Club International Connection Japanese Club Latino Club Muslim Student Association One World Society Phi Theta Kappa Honor Society Taiwanese Student Union Vietnamese Student Association

In addition, there are many clubs that focus on specific sports and other interests.

Be a Leader Demonstrating leadership on campus will make your university transfer application stand out from the competition. Our student government leaders are some of the hardest working groups of student leaders in California, and on our campuses top positions are often held by international students. From lobbying for the interests of college students throughout the state and nation to helping local charities and civic causes, participating in student government is a valuable experience.

Play a Sport If you’re interested in casual recreation, you can enroll in one of our many physical education classes or participate in the intramural program. Our athletic facilities are world class, it’s a great way to meet people, and it’s fun. If you want to play on a college team, you can pursue inter-collegiate athletics. We have men’s and women’s teams in almost all sports that are available on any American college campus.

Foothill and De Anza award the Associate in Arts (AA) and the

Associate in Science (AS) degrees in more than 100 fields of study. One-half of these degrees are earned by students who transfer into the third year of study at a university, while the other half are degrees in vocational fields earned by students who plan to go directly into the job market. More than 90 percent of international students on our campuses are completing the first two years of requirements for transfer to a university.
