society, Foothill College offers programs and services that empower students to achieve

2020-2021 PRESIDENTIAL SERVICE LEADERSHIP AWARDAbhiraj Muhar, Class of 2021

ACHIEVEMENT AWARDSDean’s Award recipients wear a gold cord and have achieved a cumulative grade-point average of 3 .5–4 .0 at Foothill College .

Honors Scholars have completed a minimum of seven honors courses or 23 units of rigorous courses through the Foothill College Honors Institute . See page 24 .

The President’s Medal is awarded at the annual commencement ceremony to first-time degree recipients with a 4 .0 GPA in all college coursework, including 60 resident units at Foothill .

The President’s Service Leadership Award is given to a graduate who has exemplified the highest qualities of leading in the service of others, locally or globally . The award comes with a $500 scholarship .

STUDENT SPEAKERS

TEREZA KOPCILOVA | Class of 2021 | Foothill College

Tereza Kopcilova is an international student from the Czech Republic . She is graduating with a business administration degree and will be temporarily transitioning to the workforce for one year of Optional Practical Training to gain more experience in her field . Tereza has served as an Associated Students of Foothill College marketing commissioner and co-chair on the Marketing Committee, worked two years as a student employee at the Financial Aid Office, and participated in the Business Entrepreneurship Club as the vice president of finance .

Tereza found her passion for student advocacy at Foothill College, and she has proposed new ideas that will benefit students for years to come .

“I want to thank Foothill’s faculty, staff, colleagues, mentors, and my family and friends for always supporting me in everything I do, believing in me, and encouraging me to follow my passion and heart .”

PABLO LASSO | Class of 2021 | Foothill College

Pablo Lasso is originally from Chile . Pablo is a percussionist of Afro-Cuban rhythms and plays instruments like the djembe, cajon and bodhran at the Stanford Catholic Community and with a jazz combo called Tuesday Noons . Pablo also composes hip-hop songs with social impact .

Pablo is graduating with an associate degree in music technology and is excited about his future as a music producer . “I am a little person and have Morquio Syndrome . I have overcome many hurdles in my life in order to be here, therefore this is a great milestone for me to graduate,” Pablo says . “I am beyond thankful to Foothill College .”

In his free time, Pablo likes to row at the Bair Island Aquatic Center at the adapted rowing program or outdoors on the water and hike in the California and Chile mountain foothills .

CLASSIFIED SPEAKER PAULINE BROWN-UILI, M.A. | Supervisor | Family Engagement Institute

Pauline Brown-Uili is a second-generation Samoan American, born and raised in East Palo Alto, and the oldest of seven siblings . When she was nine, Pauline volunteered with the Foothill College Counseling Department and Pass the Torch . She fondly remembers how Dr . Jean Thomas and her team greeted every student with a smile . Pauline attended Eastside College Preparatory School and studied cell molecular biology at the University of California, Merced . She was the first in her family to receive her bachelor’s degree . Recently, Pauline received her Master of Arts in leadership from William Jessup University .

Pauline is dedicated to the work of serving students . She has coordinated many college and community events, emceed student government and FEI events, advised the People of the Pasefika (POP) student club, and mentored countless students . She has also served as a recorder, facilitator, and classified staff member on the Revenue and Resource Council and is an active member in the Asian Pacific American Network (APAN) . Pauline enjoys spending time with family, laughing with friends, and serving as a mentor to the youth in her community . She is honored to speak at this year’s commencement and wishes all the graduates a huge blessing on their future endeavors .

FACULTY SPEAKER TIFFANY RIDEAUX, PSY.D. | Instructor | Psychology

Tiffany Rideaux has been a full-time instructor in the psychology department at Foothill College since fall 2014 and is currently an Umoja co-coordinator and a faculty mentor in the Humanities Mellon Scholar program . She earned her bachelor’s degree in Italian studies from Stanford University and her doctorate degree in clinical psychology from the PGSP – Stanford PsyD Consortium program at Palo Alto University . Prior to teaching, she worked for the San Francisco non-profit Institute on Aging, conducting in-home cognitive assessments and published research with colleagues at the VA Palo Alto Healthcare System . She is passionate about psychology and helping students use mindfulness and meditation skills to manage their social and emotional experiences .

THE BACHELOR’S DEGREEToday marks Foothill’s fourth graduating class receiving a bachelor’s degree in dental hygiene . In 2015, Foothill was one of 15 California community colleges selected to offer a baccalaureate program . Students acquire the necessary skills, knowledge and practice in their field for a fraction of the cost of a four-year university or college . Foothill’s dental hygiene program has received accolades from the California Community College Chancellor’s Office for the attainment of post-college outcomes in employment, earnings gains and regional living wages . Students may enter the job market immediately or choose to pursue a graduate degree upon completing board exams and licensing requirements .

THE ASSOCIATE DEGREEEarning the associate degree represents more than an accumulation of units . It symbolizes the successful completion of established patterns of learning designed to develop capabilities and insights . Among these are the ability to think and communicate clearly; use mathematics; understand the modes of inquiry of major disciplines; be aware of other cultures, eras and places; gain insight into ethical problems; and develop self-understanding . In addition to all these, the student focuses on one field of knowledge in sufficient depth to contribute to lifetime interest . Additionally, the associate degree for transfer guarantees the student admission with junior standing to the California State University system .

ACADEMIC REGALIAIn the 12th and 13th centuries, when universities were under the jurisdiction of the church, students wore habits, or cloaks with hoods, which were designed to provide warmth in unheated buildings . The more colorful modern academic costume originated at England’s Oxford and Cambridge universities in the 1300s, and has been used continuously in the U .S . since colonial days .

The mortarboard represents no particular degree or school, except that the short, gold tassel is worn only by holders of the doctorate degree . The tassel may be worn on either side of the cap .

The gown itself is usually black for all holders of baccalaureate or higher degrees . Bachelor’s and master’s degrees styles differ little, but doctorate gowns are faced with velvet panels and velvet bars on the sleeves .

Only the hood itself shows by its length and colors the distinction among degrees, academic majors, and colleges or universities that conferred the degrees . The higher the degree, the longer the hood and the wider the velvet facing that outlines the hood . The color of the velvet facing denotes the academic area in which the degree was awarded . The colors of the satin lining in the hood are the colors of the school where the degree

was awarded (e .g ., Stanford University colors are cardinal and white; University of California, Berkeley, colors are blue and gold) .

In 1957, founding Superintendent Dr. Calvin C. Flint surveyed the 122-acre site that would soon be transformed into one of the nation’s preeminent community colleges. He envisioned a campus that would foster innovation and academic excellence. As Foothill celebrates our 61st annual Commencement Ceremony, we renew our commitment to that legacy of innovation.

From our first graduating class of 37 students in 1960, Foothill has grown to serve approximately 13,000 day, evening, and online students each quarter. Foothill is a nationally recognized leader in educational excellence. This recognition is due to the exemplary work of our dedicated faculty and staff and the talents of the extraordinary students who graduate each year.

This year, we also celebrate the fourth cohort of students who will receive a Bachelor of Science degree in Dental Hygiene. Foothill College is one of 15 community colleges offering baccalaureate degrees in the State of California.

Service leadership is Foothill College’s vision for educating students and preparing them to be leaders. Students participate in service leadership projects in and out of the classroom, locally and internationally. Projects take place throughout the year and culminate in the annual Research & Service Leadership Symposium, which takes place each May.

Founded on the principle of educational opportunity for all, Foothill College provides quality education with an equity focus. The physical beauty, architectural integrity and hilltop location of Foothill College symbolize the distinction and innovation that are the essence of the college’s academic programs and services.
