GENERAL MANAGER'S MESSAGE

On behalf of the Chairman of QBE Insurance Sydney Football, Don Roach, and as your General Manager, I would like to state that I am very proud and pleased with what occurred this year in Sydney with all Sydney Football League games being played, a first for a number of years. ·

The increase on last year's record number of teams of 65 teams to 68 this year is testimony to the continued re-birth of football in this great city.

The Sydney Football Association Division II Grand Final at Whalan was a huge success with a record crowd witnessing the form side Penrith def eat reigning premiers Hawkesbury, while in the Under 20's the Merry/ands Club beat Heathcote.

The ultimate dream of every player and coach is to participate in a finals series and uliimately go on to he premiers, however on all occasions professional presentation and the game must he the winners.

To the North Shore and Baulkham Hills Clubs a special congratulations on having all three grades in the grand final A magnificent achievement in anybodies language.

Our game is a team game and individual honour is nice, hut the team always comes first, however congratulations to the Best and Fairest Winners. Phelan Medal David West, Saunders Medal Peter Taylor and Kealey Medal Peter Thiris.

September is the .time when a noticeable change of attitude takes place within players and staff at a club. As the weather improves so does the morale at trainin!J and tempo on the track. Players arrive earlier as they sense the chance to play in tlze big one.

Experienced sides at this stage endeavour to learn from past experience and take remedial action to overcome defzci.encies which may have let them down in the past.

Otzce the dye is cast with your team, it's up to the players and no one else.

The umpiring area of our game has seen a vast improvement in quality Ond quantity this year, thanks to David Levens, Max Henry and support staff.

To those who receive Grand Final appointments good luck and may you enjoy the day as we all will

My staff must he thanked on your behalf on the superb job they do, from the paid professionals to the honorary people, we are truely fortunate.

May the best team hold the premiership trophy aloft and the game he the winner.

N.B. Let it he known that any indiscretion, on and/or off the field, by officials and players will he severely dealt with by the League Administration.

ORDER OFF RULE FOR FINALS -' '

The Order Off rule, as applied during the season, will continue to operate during the Finals Series. The League has also decided that, where appointed, Emergency Umpires will have the power to order players from the field where necessary in addition to their normal reporting powers.

Umpires are, instructed to keep the game going or to restart the game when a fight/melee occurs. This action in most cases results in the disturbance breaking up, however should the incident continue after the field umpires have moved on with the play, the Emergency Umpire will be on the spot to take any appropriale action~ ·

The Order Off rule is briefly summarised below.

Sydney Football League - Seniors and Reserves Only (Option 1 ).

A player who is reported twice by Field Umpires for breaches of the laws of the game or who is reported for a serious breach will be ordered to leave the field for the remainder of the match. Such players can be replaced.

Serious breaches include interference with umpires, serious assault on another player or gross misconduct.

All Other Grades (Option 2).

Players who are reported, use obscene language or who generally create a problem for the umpires in controlling the game can be ordered from the field tor a fixed period of fifteen minutes. Such players cannot be_replaced.

NOTE:- The above description is a summary only.

All Clubs have been issued with a detailed interpretation of the Order Off Laws as they apply in the N.S. W.A.F.L.

A HAPPY HOOKER·

NORTH SHORE are justifiable favourites to avenge last year's grand final defeat, and Parramatta coach Ron Thomas agrees with that com-mon belief. ·

"We were well and truly beaten in the second semi and they have beaten us three out of four times this year," Thomas said.

"They've been the better side all year."

Norths' Rod Hooker is happy to hear that because he considers his side deserves to be favourites. The fact that they have easily beaten Parra three times this year, and especially the ease in which they did so in the second semi two weeks ago vindicates their favouritism.

Parra must stop Norths' running game and-their many speedy small ball gatherers.

A couple of vital contests at either end of the ground will go a long way in determining the result. The SFL's leading goalkicker Keg Foster will be marked by Stuart Carlaw. Carlaw restricted Foster to only the single goal in the second semi and if he can repeat that, Parra will struggle to kick enough to win. At the other end, Shane Salmon will take care of the equally tall Paul Drury. If Salmon can nullify Drury, Norths still have other options for goal, unlike Parra.

Parra need to shut down Tad Batty and Tony Loton on the wing and if Craig Lieschke plays as is suspected, Norths have a bonus from the semi.

Andrew Mills and Shane Robson are unlikely to play after injuries incurred in last week's preliminary final.

Hooker is confident Norths will be a better side this week than the one which played in the second semi.

This is the first time since they last won the premiership in 1985 that Norths have gone straight into the grand final from the second semi and Hooker thinks that is a good sign.

The big marking players like Mick Partridge for.Parra and Andrew McKindlay and Steve Smith for Norths will be important players.

On form and the number of fit players available, Norths have to be favoured, but Parra can not be disregarded, simply because they have so many good players who showed some gutsy courage last week in coming back from behind.

Parra will find it tough, but by no means will Norths have it easy in a four or five goal win.

I L ____ n_AL_MAI __ N_B_o_v_s_MA __ Y~c_R_Y ___ ___.I LOSING TO Baulkham Hills in the second semi two weeks ago was the best thing that could have happened to Ba/main according to coach Neil Briscoe. Ba/main came out a much stronger side in the preliminary final against Manly last week than they did against Baulkham Hills th~ week before,_ and Briscoe says this ensures Bau/ko won't repeat thelf second semi win.

"We wanted a tough game and we got one. We were going through the motions before, and losing shoved us back in our place. The boys are keen to make amends." Briscoe said.

An indescretion from ruckman Chris Parker almost cost them their grand final spot though. Parker was sent off half way through the last quarter for

- elbowing an opponent and subsequently received athreeweeksuspeAsion, -

From a five goal lead, with only 17 men on the field, Balmain plumette.d to only lead by five points with minutes to ~o. A late goal and so~e behinds put them safely 13 points clear, but not without a degree of panic.

Both Balmain and Baulkham Hills like running the ball, but Balmainhold a slight edge in the air and will try to exploit that.

Baulko ruckman and coach Doug Scholz holds the key for them. If he can provide the Baulko runners with plenty of ball to deliver to Shaun Myles and Peter Sheehan up forward, they are on their way to winning. With Parker out, Scholz's job in the ruck is made that much easier.

Both teams are young, but Baulko more so with 14 players 20 years old or younger.

This may count against them in the pressure of a grand final as the more experienced Balmain have been there done that. ·

Scholz says that Balmain were the pacesetters all year and ~he team to aspire to, but is confident his side has more than matched their game and will teach them a thing or two this week.

Baulko have picked the rigt time of the year to play their hbgbest football, and if their loss two weeks ago haqs woken the Balmain boys, this game should be a worthy grand final.

Baulkham Hills' skill and better running game will give them their first flag.

North ~agga a~e pretty strong f a~ourites to take the flag next week whoever they play having easily beaten Mango m last week's second semi by 43 points.

To add to an already strong side next week North Wagga will have Brett Page back from the Swans. ·

Mango are favoured to beatAriah Park to set up a replay of the second semi with a similar result likely. ·

North Wagga 's Paul Irvine won the Gerald Clear medal for the best and fairest in Farrer division One. · Division Two

· R~vc~ll Bushpigs around Australia rejoice as the pigs took the quinella last week wmnmg first grade and reserve grade premierships, their first in first Grade since 1978.

In previous years the pigs h~ve lost a lot of players to town clubs, but this year were able to keep many of their better players and quality players like David Grimmomnd, Neil L~ne anti- Simon Hicks staying at the college made a huge difference. They secured Billy Quirk from North Wagga as coach and he did an excellent job. The pigs beat Cootamundra 17.8.110to10.7.67 in first grade and South Wagga Tolland 10.8.68 to 7.4.46 in reserves.

Darren McDonald from Uranquity Ka.pookq, won the Allan Carrol memorial medal for Farrer II best and fairest.

LEISURE COAST

Shellharbour beat Nowra by 72 points in last week's first semi to set up this week's preliminary fmal against Bomadeny at Nowra. _ ·

The undefeated HMAS Albatross beat Bomadeny in 1the second semi by three - ' . goals in what was a close match all day.

1

Albatross are lo king certain to complete an undef eted season with a win in next week's grand final although Bomadeny could push them again if they get through Shellharbour this week

Adam Harris from Albatross won the Ray Tunbridge trophy for the best and fairest Leisure Coast player of 1991.

A DOUBLE HAT TRICK \ .

THIS WEEKEND'S two grand finals, in the Sydney Football League and Sydney Football Association Division One share a number of features, the most striking being that two clubs, North shore and Baulkham Hills have the opportunity to win all three flags in their competitions.

Norths have been there on a five occasions before, but could never win more than one flag on those days.

Baulkham Hills on the other hand are a young club and have developed with very impressive speed. Their juniors have always been one of Sydney's strongest, both playing wise and administratively, and when the junior club's. administration took. over the beleagured, and separate Baulkham Hills senior club in 1990, success was imminent.

In two years as the new club, they have all three sides in the grand final and the chance to be the first club since Manly in 1985 to take the hat trick. Sydney University had all three in in 1986, but their reserves went down to Sutherland by eight points.

If Baulkham Hill$ have any doubts over taking all three, they lie with their reserve grade.

This is probably North Shore's best chance of their six with a very strong reserves against a Parramatta forced to give up a number of their better players to the seniors, and perenially strong Under 19s against St George. their first grade, on form, must start favourites.

If they do win all three it would be disappointing for them that they go back to Gore Hill to an increasingly expensive, brand new but condemned clubhouse and must celebrate in their caravans.

All four coaches involved have an enormous amount of experience between them. Ron Thomas has played VFL football for Richmond, administered the Swans an·d has coached and managed a host of representative teams. North Shore's Rod Hooker had many years as a successful junior coach after moving to Sydney from Melbourne where he spent a lot of time with Essendon working with Kevin Sheedy.

Neil Briscoe at Balmain has over 1 O years experience in Sydney football including Balmain's 1983 SFL grand final side and a year at St George and Parramatta. Baulkham Hills' Doug Scholz, originally from Albury played for many years with Hills and won last year's Snow Medal in his first year captain coaching Baulkham Hills.

Congratulations to Phelan Medallist David West who with his form all year, and the size of the St George contingent and their cameras at the countshould not have looked so surprised ..

PARRA BOUNCE BACK

PARRAMATTA bounced back after their thorough beating to North Shore in the second semi to end Wests hopeful run, although it was done the hard way. Half way through the second quarter, it looked as though Wests could bundle Parra right out of the finals, but Parra found the fight they didn't have in the two games beforehand and struggled back strongly to win by 31 points.

Parra started off like lightning with Keg Foster kicking the first goal in 38 seconds followed by two quick goals to Andrew Mills and Parra seemed to be in for a big day. As in the first semi against Campbelltown, Wests took some time to settle down, but once they did, two goals to Chris Masterson and some poor kicking at goal put them .within two points at quarter time.

The similarities to the first semi continued when Wests settled into stride in the second quarter and six goals in the last 1 O minutes of the quarter put them 22 points up. A late goal to Parramatta bridged the gap to 16 at the break. That's where the similarities end, as Parra came back at Wests with a determination to at least give themselves a chance to defend their premiership .. A goal to Dale Laube and two to Foster gave Parra a two point lead within seven minutes, and they were never again headed.

Foster kicked another three goals in the quarter to stretch Parra's lead to 29 points at three quarter time.

In that third quarter, Matt Corbett swept across the Parra half back line and intercepted every Wests attack with largely uncontested marking. He was assisted by Michael Porta who dropped back and also acted as a sweeper. By the time Wests playing coach John Zelesco picked these moves up, Parra had run away with the game.

Two goals in the first minute of the last quarter sealed the game for Parra.

Making Parramatta's comeback even more creditable was the fact that half way through the second quarter they lost Andrew Mills with suspected broken ribs and Shane Robson with a bad ankle, and played the rest of the game without an interchange bench.

Coach Ron Thomas was for the first time in a while reasonably subdued and content at the end of the match, satisfied with the character his side showed in coming back from two defeats in a row and from 22 points down in the second quarter to score a confidence boosting win before the grand final.

A VERY BRIEF APPRAISAL OF WHAT LIES AHEAD FOR THE CLUBS NOT HERE TODAY. ..

WESTS Undoubtedly the improvers of 1991 after a vigourous off season recruiting programme.

They picked up a lot of talented and young footballers with the sudden luxury of money to support their recruiting. Their young players, if they can keep them will be better off next year for this year's experience, but they need more height and experience to improve even furthe1: \..

CAMPBELLTOWN Were predicted to slide at the start of the year ·and although not as far as many thought, they did slip and will probably continue to do so next year. Still relying heavily on Rod Podbury and Russell Matheson who. can't go on for ever and are only year to year propositions.

SYDNEY UNWERSITY Continue to improve and set some milestones this year beating Easts and Campbelltown for the first time, coming within one point of North Shore and beating def ending premiers and grand finallists Parramatta by a point in the last game. If they can pick up more students playing for other clubs should be able to continue that improvement. ·

STGEORGE

Saints started the year very slowly, but their win over arch rivals Campbelltown was a turning point and as their confui.ence grew, they improved markedly towards the end. They have the potential to get back into the four if they can maintain the momentum they had at the end of the year.

HILLS

Another disappointing year for Hills, but. Gus assures all that steps have been taken to ensure no such comment can be made again. Big steps need to be taken, because as Gus says all they need is to improve a few problem areas - the forward line, the backline, their on ball players and, centre line.

EASTS

The worst season in Easts history with all three sides taking the wooden spoon. Again they assure all that steps will be taken to. replace the quality footballers they usually depend on coming from the country and. settling in the eastern -suburbs

.; who didn't come this year. With no junior association to speak of they rely on the transient footballer, and will find it hard to get back up to their traditionally powerful selves.

THE OLD VERSUS THE NEW

TODAY'S GRAND Final features one of the original Sydney clubs ana the second newest in the league.

North Shore was formed in 1903 as one of the foundation members of the reformed NSWAFL, while Parramatta was only formed in 1962 and after a chequered but brief history was promoted to first division football in 1985.

In that period North Shore have won eight premierships and have been runners up om 11 occasions. Parramatta only took six years to win their first flag, in their first year in the finals, and are today going for number two.

Both clubs had interesting early days. Before the harbour bridge was built, the north shore was as isolated from the rest of town as Campbellton is today, and the only way to get across to the northern side was by punt across the harbour, making for a long day for an away game. Norths disbanded during the wars, but in their first year out of hibernation after WWI, the Bears, then called the Robins won the 1921 pren:iiership. In 1962, Aussie rules followers in the Parramatta area formed a first grade and reserves side playing as Parramatta at Mona Park, Auburn, The club's major obstacle was the apathy towards the strange game in the western suburbs at the time and they struggled. In 1964, they combined with Bankstown and Liverpool to form Southern Districts, virtually banishing Aussie rules back to obscurity in Parramatta.

In the 1970s, the Ermington side played in third division. This club was banned by the league for 'too much fighting and not enough football'. Current Parra mentor Ken Gray established the Paramatta club in 1980 with a lot of the Ermington lads and they played at ELS Hall oval in North Ryde in second division.

That year they won the wooden spoon, but as they did when they were promoted to first division it didn't take long for them to gather momentum and become a force. Oddly enough, they didn't win a second division premiership, running up in 1983 and third in 1984, the year before they were promoted.

North Shore have played a total of 1405 games, winning 723, losing 658, drawing 23 and one was abandoned.

Parramatta have played a total of 260 games, winning 112, losing 146 and drawing two.

North Shore have won 16 of the 20 times these two sides have played.
