QUICK HITTERS

A LOOK AT WEEK FOURTen C-USA teams are in action this week, with nine games spread over three days. One league game is on the slate, three games will be against the Ameri-can and three games will be vs. the Sun Belt.

UAB will play its third straight Thursday night game when the Blazers drive downstate to meet South Ala-bama in Mobile for the fi rst time (7 p.m. CT on ESPN). The UAB pass defense will be tested by a Jaguars squad that is sixth in the nation in passing off ense, averaging 342.0 yards per game through the air.

In a game that was not on the schedule until this past Saturday, Middle Tennessee will now travel to UTSA (7 p.m. CT on CBS Sports Network), as the Blue Raiders replace Memphis, which was unable to play due to COVID cases and quarantining. The Roadrun-ners have produced back-to-back C-USA Off ensive Players of the Week in sophomore RB Sincere Mc-

Cormick (the nation’s leading rusher) and junior QB Frank Harris (the FBS leader in rushing touchdowns).

A seven game Saturday begins at 11 am CT when Georgia State comes to Charlotte for the 49ers home opener (ESPNU). Redshirt junior LB Tyler Murray

(14) and redshirt senior S Ben DeLuca (16) combined for 30 tackles in Charlotte’s season opener and will lead the defense against a Panthers team that took No. 21 Louisiana-Lafayette to overtime last week.

FIU will open season number four under head coach Butch Davis when the Panthers make their fi rst visit to Liberty (12 p.m. CT on ESPN3). FIU will feature 15 new starters as it looks to knock off a Flames team that won at WKU last Saturday.

Longtime rivals Tulane and Southern Miss meet for the 32nd time, but the fi rst time in the regular season since 2013 when the Green Wave make the 100-mile trek up to Hattiesburg (1:30 p.m. CT on Stadium). Golden Eagles senior QB Jack Abraham is coming off a three touchdown passing performance in their conference opener last Saturday night.

UTEP will be looking to improve to 3-1 for the fi rst time since the 2010 season when it visits Louisiana-Monroe (2:30 p.m. CT on ESPNU). Miners sophomore WR Jacob Cowing has a nation-leading 19 recep-tions for 275 yards (second in the FBS).

Defending C-USA Champion Florida Atlantic is scheduled open its 2020 season by hosting South Florida (6 pm CT on CBSSN). The game will mark the debut of Willie Taggart as the Owls head coach as new-look FAU will have a lot of fresh faces in start-ing positions this fall as it faces the team Taggart coached from 2013-16.

Fresh off a thrilling last minute win at Southern Miss, Louisiana Tech will welcome Houston Baptist for its home opener (6 p.m. CT on ESPN3). Bulldogs fresh-man LB Tyler Grubbs was named the Athlon Sports Defensive National Freshman of the Week after re-cording 16 tackles in his collegiate debut.

Marshall held Appalachian State to 96 rush-ing yards, the Mountaineers’ fewest since 2014 (74 vs. Georgia Southern). Junior RB Brenden Knox ran for 138 yards and a touchdown on off ense, while senior LB Tavante Beckett had 16 tackles and a forced fum-ble for a Herd defense that has allowed just seven total points in two games.

(career-high eight receptions for 89 yards).

A SINCERE LEADER2019 C-USA Freshman of Year Sincere McCormick is off to a great start to his sophomore year, helping UTSA to a 2-0 start. In Saturday’s 24-10 win over Stephen F. Austin, he narrowly missed his second straight 100-yard game, rushing 19 times for 98 yards, while adding four catches for 47 yards. His 297 rushing yards lead all FBS rushers after three weeks.

C-USA BOWL SYNOPSISConference USA has announced the league’s bowl lineup that will span the six-year cycle from 2020-25.

The conference is guaranteed seven bowl ap-pearances in each year of the new cycle and will have associations with up to 16 diff erent bowls.

As part of the new bowl cycle, C-USA will annu-ally send teams to the Bahamas Bowl against a Mid-American Conference opponent, and to the R+L Carriers New Orleans Bowl, against a Sun Belt Conference school. The league has participated in all six Bahamas Bowls and has placed a team in the New Orleans Bowl 14 times in its fi rst 18 years.

As previously announced, the league will continue its relationship with the Radiance Technologies Independence Bowl. C-USA is guaranteed to send a team to the Shreveport, Louisiana-based bowl in 2021 and 2025, while holding a secondary agreement with the bowl in the other years of the cycle.

C-USA will also continue its long-standing relationship with the SoFi Hawai’i Bowl. The league is set to participate in the Honolulu-based game in 2020, 2022 and 2024.

The conference’s remaining guaranteed selec-tions in the cycle (either four or fi ve per sea-son) will include the LendingTree Bowl (Mobile, Alabama) or from among 11 games which are owned and operated by ESPN Events.

C-USA and the College Football Playoff

As a member of the College Football Playoff , Conference USA will be a part of one of the CFP bowls if it produces the highest rated champion from among the American Athletic, C-USA, Mid-American, Mountain West and Sun Belt Conferences.

The Playoff

During the 2014-15 season, college football entered a new era when postseason playoff s began. The format is simple: top four teams, two semifi nals played in bowl games, and a national championship game played in a diff er-ent city each year. Each semifi nal will be played during the New Year’s holiday with the national championship game in prime time on a Mon-day night at least a week later.

The Selection Committee

A selection committee will choose the four teams for the playoff based on their perfor-mance during the regular season, including, strength of schedule, head-to-head results, championships won, and other factors. The teams will be seeded so that No. 1 will play No. 4 in one semifi nal and No. 2 will meet No. 3 in the other, with the two winners advancing to the national championship game.

The Rotation

The semifi nals will rotate among six diff erent bowls, extending the experience to more fans. In the years when the bowls are not hosting semifi nals, the bowls will feature eight other teams in four compelling matchups.

For the 2020-21 season, the Goodyear Cotton Bowl (Dec. 30), Chick-fi l-A Peach Bowl (Jan. 1), PlayStation Fiesta Bowl (Jan. 2) and Capital One Orange Bowl (Jan. 2), will host its regular bowl games, while the Rose Bowl Game pre-sented by Northwestern Mutual (Jan. 1) and Allstate Sugar Bowl (Jan. 1) will host semifi nals. The College Football Championship will be held on Monday, Jan. 11 in Miami, Florida.
