Head Coach Joe Walton18th Season - Pittsburgh ’57

At the forefront of the football renaissance at RobertMorris University throughout its 18-year history is JoeWalton, who has built the Colonials from a fledglingprogram into one of the top Football ChampionshipSubdivision (FCS) teams in the region.

The one constant associated with the program,Walton was named the first head coach July 27, 1993. Hestarted the program from scratch, completing every-thing from hiring assistant coaches to purchasingequipment to recruiting student-athletes for theteam’s inaugural season in 1994.

Walton’s fingerprints are all over the football pro-gram, and to prove that, RMU has played its homegames since 2005 in a stadium that bears his name.

During his tenure, Walton has led Robert Morris to the first NortheastConference championship in 1996, guided RMU to a perfect 10-0 season in 2000and in 2010 helped lead the Colonials to the NEC’s inaugural bid to the NCAA FCSPlayoffs with their league-high sixth regular-season championship.

“It’s hard to believe,” Walton speaks on how fast time has elapsed. “I’ve said thismany times before, and I mean it when I say that this situation is one of the bestthings that has ever happened to me in my life. It happened at the right time. Before this position became available, I felt I was too young to quit coaching, but Iwasn’t anxious to get back into pro football. When this came along, it was the per-fect fit. This situation was the perfect opportunity for me to continue to do what Ilike to do, and I’ve loved every minute of it.”

Under Walton’s tutelage, the Colonials have claimed outright NEC regular-sea-son titles three times (1997, 1999, 2000) while sharing three others (1996, 1998,2010). Walton led Robert Morris to back-to-back ECAC Bowl victories in 1996 and1997, and in 1999 and 2000 he guided RMU to a pair of NCAA I-AA mid-majornational crowns according to Don Hansen’s National Weekly Football Gazette.

In 2010, Walton added to his legacy by engineering the Colonials on an eight-game winning streak for a share of the NEC regular-season title and the NEC’s firstbid in the NCAA FCS Playoffs. In the process he picked up his 100th career victoryin the collegiate ranks.

Joe Walton Stadium (Attendance: 2,104) - Defensive lineman Cory Nolton partially blocked a 28-yard field goal by Monmouth’s Eric Spillane with six seconds to play to help Robert Morris to a17-16 victory over the Hawks.

Spillane’s field goal attempt after being partially blocked by Nolton hit the crossbar and fellshort, capping a wild final two minutes of action.

The Colonials held a 17-10 lead at halftime, and the score remained that way until the fourthquarter, when an eight-yard touchdown pass from Kyle Frazier to Chris Hogan capped a 15-play,88-yard drive that used 9:35 off the clock. Last RMU GameThe Tale of Turnovers - Dating back to the 2010 campaign, Robert Morris willlook to snap a five-game losing streak Saturday @ Moonmouth, and limitingturnovers could go a long way in determining a winning outcome. In RMU’sfinal five games of the 2009 season as well as the program’s first nine gamesof the last season, a stretch in which the Colonials finished 13-1 (.929) andclaimed a share of the 2010 Northeast Conference regular-season champi-onship, Robert Morris posted a turnover margin of +21, an average of 1.50 pergame. Experience Counts - Freshmen Justin Brooks and Duane Mitchell will eachhave a veteran offensive line to work with in 2011, which could help aid in thedevelopment of the duo. Despite junior Nate Hargraves earning his firstcareer start at right tackle @ Morgan State (9/17), the other four members ofthe offensive line have combined for 71 career starting assignments. Theleader of the group is senior right guard Brad Rodgers, who owns 25 careerstarts on the line, including 23 straight. Seniors Brian Bevilacqua (LG) andLogan Miles (C) own 19 and 18 career starts, respectively, while sophomoreA.J. Dalton (LT) has been in the starting lineup nine times.

Many Happy Returns - Senior Anthony Coleman has been a rock for RobertMorris on special teams throughout his career, as the wide receiver entersSaturday’s game @ Monmouth owning Robert Morris career records for kick-off returns (81) and kickoff return yards (1,692). Thanks to his consistency onspecial teams, Coleman owns 2,602 career all-purpose yards, which rankseighth all-time at Robert Morris. Snapping a Streak - Junior quarterback Jeff Sinclair, who tied an RMU single-seasonschool record with 22 touchdown passes last season, completed his first touchdownpass of the 2011 campaign with a nine-yard strike to sophomore tight end VinceMongelluzzo in the fourth quarter @ Liberty (9/10). For Sinclair, it snapped a streak of80 passing attempts without a touchdown dating back to the 2010 campaign, thelongest drought of his career.

An Important Position - While junior quarterback Jeff Sinclair snapped one streak @Liberty (9/10), the recipient on the other end of his touchdown pass was sophomoretight end Vince Mongelluzzo, who recorded his first career reception. One of the mostimportant positions in head coach Joe Walton’s offense, Mongelluzzo is the 18th dif-ferent tight end in the 18-year history of the program to post a touchdown catch. Infact, Mongelluzzo is currently one of four tight ends in school history whose only catchis a touchdown, joining junior Tyler Digby and former Colonials Jeremy Wise (2002-05)and Sean McElhinny (2007-10).

Home Sweet Home - Slowly but surely, Robert Morris has learned to protect its hometurf at Joe Walton Stadium. Thanks to a 42-24 win over Central Connecticut State(11/6/10) that clinched a share of the 2010 Northeast Conference championship, RMUstretched its winning streak at “The Joe” to eight games, the longest winning streak atthe facility since opening the stadium in 2005. Despite a 19-13 setback to Dayton (9/3)in the 2011 season opener that snapped the eight-game surge, overall Robert Morrisowns a record of 17-15 (.531) in seven seasons at Joe Walton Stadium.

King of Queens - Senior tight end Shadrae King has already moved into the top five all-time at Robert Morris for career receptions after leading the Colonials in 2010 with 43receptions for 531 yards and seven touchdowns. King owns 12 receptions through thefirst three games of the 2011 season, pushing his career total in receptions to 106. Thattotal ranks third all-time at Robert Morris. King enters Saturday’s 2011 NortheastConference opener @ Monmouth just seven receptions shy of eclipsing the schoolrecord of 112 held by former wide receiver Tyjuan Massey (2002-05). Ranked secondall-time at RMU is former tight end Rupert Rickards, who posted 107 catches from2002 to 2005.

Foot Joy - One of the most important aspects that junior Jeff Sinclair brings to thequarterback position at Robert Morris is his versatility. In RMU’s season openeragainst Dayton (9/3) at Joe Walton Stadium, Sinclair scored the first touchdown of theyear for the Colonials with a five-yard run with 10:43 to play in the second quarter thatgave RMU a 7-6 advantage. In 21 career games, Sinclair has already rushed for ninetouchdowns. To put that in perspective, prior to Sinclair becoming the starter undercenter at RMU, quarterbacks combined for 16 rushing touchdowns in the first 156games of the program’s history.

Saturday Night Lights - Robert Morris traveled to Lynchburg, Va., and dropped a 38-7decision @ Liberty (9/10) in the second week of the season in a game that kicked off at7:00 p.m. It marks just the sixth time in the 18-year history of the program theColonials played a game with a kickoff after 5:00 p.m. RMU owns a record of 1-5 (.167)all-time in night games, with all six of the previous contests coming on the road. Thetilt against Liberty is one of two games on the 2011 Robert Morris schedule that is anight game, as the Colonials will host their first night game in school history when theytake on Saint Francis at Joe Walton Stadium in a 7:00 p.m. kickoff Saturday, Oct. 8, aspart of the University’s Homecoming festivities.
