LINCOLNTON — Lincoln-ton head football coach Scott Cloninger doesn’t dispute it — the Wolves are in a rebuild-ing phase. He also understands that expectations are going to be high for a team with a 59-15 record over the last five years with three conference champi-onships, a 2A state title in 2007 and a state runner-up finish in 2011.

The Wolves have been partic-ularly powerful in the last two years, with a 28-3 record. Clon-inger said this isn’t the first time he’s had to build a team from the ground up, but losing 23 seniors and 18 starters makes putting a team together even more diffi-cult.

That means that young play-ers, even some who start the season on the junior varsity squad, will have to carry the team through this year’s season.

“It’s nothing new — in high school athletics you’re going to graduate kids,” he said. “This one is a little bit more rebuild-ing than we’ve done before, with losing 23 seniors. Their replacements are very young, too. There aren’t many seniors on this team, and a lot of young people are going to be starting.”

Lincolnton has a 40-man ros-ter this year, with 17 seniors, 16 juniors, six sophomores and one freshman.

Junior Ketawn Ingram and sophomore Chavis Russell are competing for the quarter-back position in Lincolnton’s

double-wing, triple-option of-fense. Junior Justice Charles and sophomores Tyron Roberts and Darian Roseboro will share time at fullback when they’re not playing on Lincolnton’s 3-4 defense. Several players are competing for the starting job at Lincolnton’s wingback position. Cloninger said he is hesitant to name starters until just a couple of days before the start of the season.

“I want the competition,” he said. “No one is head and shoul-ders above anyone else. There are four or five wings who can start, and that’s a good thing. You can’t beat the competition.”

Cloninger did name his cap-tains — seniors Demetris An-

DENVER — The East Lin-coln Mustangs have 24 seniors on their 46-man roster; all of that experience has translated into a smooth offseason for the team as it prepares for the Au-gust 17 season opener at New-ton-Conover.

Quarterback Garrett Young returns for his senior season as the Mustangs’ signal caller and has several veteran wide receiv-ers, including seniors Jake Driv-er and Jesse Earnhardt, as op-tions for his passes.

The Mustangs finished in sec-ond place in the Southern Pied-mont Conference last year (7-5, 5-2 SPC). With all that returning talent, Young said the team was feeling confident in its ability to make things interesting in the conference this year.

“We all think we can do it,” he said. “I think we have a good shot, but it’s not going to be given to us. We have to go out there and work hard and get bet-ter at every practice. Even when the season starts, we’ll have to go out Monday through Thurs-day and get better and prepare ourselves for that week, or it doesn’t matter whom we play.”

The Mustangs graduated sev-eral members of their offense after the 2011-2012 season whom they will have difficulty replacing. Running back Mar-cus “Bubba” McDowell led the Mustangs in total yards, with 2,351 combined rushing and receiving yards with 38 touch-downs. McDowell and Ant-waine McLean were Young’s two favorite targets at receiver, with McLean leading the team with 47 receptions for 904 yards and 11 touchdowns.OFFENSE

East Lincoln runs a spread offense that takes advantage of Young’s passing arm and speedy running backs and receivers.

“The strength, offensively, has been our wideouts and our quarterback,” East Lincoln head coach Mike Byus said. “We have to find a couple more of-

fensive linemen to get the job done. We’re trying to get the combination of knowledge of the position and aggression put together at guard.”

The Mustangs have four se-nior offensive linemen, Caleb Campbell (6 feet 2 inches, 240 pounds), Derek Hilgert (5 feet 11 inches, 195 pounds), Co-lin Rohr (5 feet 10 inches, 205 pounds) and Colton Stortz (6 feet 4 inches, 290 pounds).

Driver and Earnhardt both add speed for the Mustangs at wide receiver, complimented by seniors Clay Hodges, Devin Douglas, Tyler Brock, Bruce Rohr, Jaquan Herbet and An-drew Yount. Byus also cited junior Billy Misenheimer as a

player who could make an im-pact at wide receiver.

Byus said the Mustangs will start senior Marquis Pharr at running back. Pharr, at 5 feet 6 inches and 155 pounds, is slightly smaller than McDowell, but still has the speed and agility necessary for the position, hav-ing carried the ball 34 times for 224 yards and two touchdowns last year.

“He’s very agile and his straight-ahead speed is good; his quickness is good,” East Lincoln head coach Mike Byus said. “He has to learn to follow his blockers and be secure with the football. He’s 100 miles an hour all the time. Sometimes

VALE — The West Lincoln Rebels have 11 starters returning on the varsity roster, and hope to improve on last year’s 4-8 fin-ish that closed with a first-round exit from the playoffs.

“We want to be on the winning side of the season,” head coach Tom Sain said. “There were a couple of games last year where I felt like I didn’t have the team prepared. I don’t think I had us mentally focused for some of those games. I’ll do a better job as a coach to get us more pre-pared to get in those games.”

The Rebels finished last year with a 3-4 record in conference play that earned the team a trip to the playoffs, where they were defeated in the first round by Shelby High School. West Lin-coln’s conference wins came against Highland Tech, Lake

Norman Charter and North Lin-coln. The Rebels had an 8-4 fin-ish in 2010, Sain’s first year as head coach.

Sain, now entering his third season as head coach, said he was happy with the work he saw from his team during offseason workouts and in the first weeks of official practices.

“We had a real good spring,” he said. “I was pleased with what we did during the spring and summer. I think we’re right where we need to be. We’ve been doing a lot of getting in shape, and the guys have been coming back and working hard.”

West Lincoln’s 30-man ros-ter includes 18 juniors. Sain said having a young team has its ad-vantages.

“We’ll have a few younger guys who will be stepping up,” he said. “I always like to play a few younger players. The year

we were 8-4, some of the se-niors that year were starters when they were 10th-graders. That builds a lot of leadership in those guys.”

West Lincoln opens the sea-son August 17 at home against Chase. The Rebels lost to Chase in 2011, but defeated them at home in 2010.OFFENSE

West Lincoln runs a wing-T offense that Sain described as “deceptive.”

“We try to use a variety of speeds and we have some guys who can run,” he said. “We try to give the ball to the back and use angles to avoid defenses and use our blocking to get us out in the open, instead of just running by the defense.”

The 5-foot-9-inch, 165-pound junior Corey Smith is this year’s

PUMPKIN CENTER — The North Lincoln Knights have a “fresh start” in the 2012-2013 season, according to first-year head coach David Maness.

North Lincoln has new of-fensive and defensive systems, a new playbook and some new players, with seniors in several key positions.

The Knights have a veteran quarterback in Cory Blake, last year’s starter, and he will be sur-rounded by other players who have already seen time on the field.

“It’s good that our quarter-back has some game experi-ence, even though it’s not expe-rience at the system we’re doing now,” Maness said. “But it does help that it’s not going to be his first rodeo.”

Blake, senior fullback David

Spinner and tight end Scott De-Luca make up the core of North Lincoln’s offensive threats, but Maness said he was going to have a young team in certain spots, like the offensive line, wide receiver and defensive back.

“We have a good looking group of young kids,” Maness said. “There are a lot of ninth- and 10th-graders. We’re go-ing to be able to stockpile some linemen down the road.”

The Knights have struggled during the past three seasons, and Maness is the fourth head coach in as many years. North Lincoln has not had a winning season since 2008, the final year under former head coach Matt Beam. Maness said setting the tone for the season in the first few games of nonconference play is essential.

“We understand our situation,

but we’re going to try to win as many as we can early,” he said. “If we can get a good start it will be very important for us.”

OFFENSEThe Knights run a double-

wing offense with Blake and his backup, sophomore Devin Cox, at quarterback, Spinner at full-back and DeLuca at wing. De-Luca was a wide receiver is last year’s offensive set, but Maness feels a move to wingback bet-ter suits both the player and the team.

“He has pretty good size, which fits our system,” Maness said. “He’s a tough kid and has adequate speed and a good atti-tude.”

Maness said the Knights won’t be sending many players to wide receiver, and will in-stead use more sets with a focus

starting quarterback, with junior Daniel Davila at fullback.

“Smith has been our junior varsity quarterback for two years,” Sain said. “He knows the offense and he’s fundamentally

as good as you would want him to be. Right now he just lacks a little varsity playing experience, but he’s going to get that pretty quick. (Smith) and Davila are almost best friends off the field. They work very well together; they’re a good tandem in there.”

Other running backs on the East Lincoln roster include ju-niors Domonique Smith and Malik Nixon, sophomore Dam-arius Valentine and freshman Torey Haynes.

Offensive Player to Watch: Garrett Young

Young first started at quarter-back for East Lincoln in the final four games of his sophomore season, and knows the position and the Mustang offense so well that Byus said “he knows what everyone is doing, too.”

Young completed 134 of his 213 pass attempts last year for 2,312 yards and 29 touchdowns with only eight interceptions.

He said he’s been ready for the start of the 2012 season since the Mustangs’ first-round loss in the playoffs last year to

derson, Danieko Givens, Aaron Brown and Hunter Cline. Clon-inger said those seniors are ex-pected to take leadership roles on the team.

“Those are the captains,” he said. “They’re the four seniors who have been with us. We’re expecting them to be our lead-ers because they’re our return-ing starters.”

Cloninger said Lincolnton fans will have to be patient with this year’s team as the coaching staff solidifies its starting roster with the best players for the po-sitions.

“We’ve been a little spoiled, including coaches, players and the community,” he said. “We’ve won as many games as anyone in the state over the last two years. We have to get back to the basics. It may be slow progress early, but we want to peak at the right time and get better each week. That’s our goal.”OFFENSE

Cloninger said Lincolnton’s double-wing offense is well-suited to this year’s personnel. Ingram quarterbacked the Lin-colnton junior varsity team, which also runs the double wing, and gained valuable expe-rience as a leader on that squad. Russell was a junior varsity run-ning back, but is now also vying

for a varsity quarterback spot. The Wolves will also have sev-eral strong options at fullback and wingback.

“The two quarterbacks are learning; they both have the tal-ent to run the ball,” Cloninger said. “Roberts, Roseboro and Charles all bring a different kind of dimension to the game at full-back. People are going to be sur-prised at how fast Roseboro is for his size. And no one is going to be surprised how many times Roberts wants to just run over them. If we can get the fullbacks into the secondary, I wouldn’t want to be the safety trying to tackle them. We’ve gotten them into the secondary during our practices and I’ve blown the whistle because I don’t want anyone trying to tackle them.”

The Lincolnton receiving corps includes senior starter Matthew Wray, at 6 feet 2 inch-es and 205 pounds, and senior Alonzo Mobley, at 6 feet 3 inch-es and 180 pounds. Givens, Brown and Cline are all offen-sive linemen.

The lack of experience in the offensive backfield has made the Lincolnton coaching staff amenable to looking for players in many different places.

“There’s a whole lot of learn-ing going on in the backfield,” Cloninger said. “They’re all working hard. They know the positions are open. That starter may not play as much as the sec-

Starmount.“There have been long nights

of staying up and thinking about the games since last year,” he said. “The time has flown by, and here it is.”

Young said he has only one goal that matters for the 2012-

2013 season — “win.”“The more wins, the better

my chances are of reaching my goals,” he said.

DEFENSEThe Mustang defense, play-

ing out of a 4-3 base, has veter-an players at line and linebacker and in the defensive backfield. Junior Coriyo Boyd (6 feet, 300 pounds) and senior Dallas Smith

(6 feet 2 inches, 300 pounds) make running plays through the middle of the defensive line a tight squeeze for the Mustangs’ opponents.

“We have good size up front,” Byus said. “If the other teams run right at us we’ll be alright, but people aren’t going to do that every single down.”

Seniors Trent Henderson and

Scott McMichael anchor the Mustangs at linebacker along with junior Justin Rhodes. Se-niors Devin Douglas, Misem-heimer, Hodges, junior Moses Boyter and sophomore Valen-tine will share the duty for the Mustangs at safety and corner-back.

Defensive Player to Watch: Scott McMichael

McMichael adds a big frame (6 feet, 220 pounds) for the Mustangs at middle linebacker, and the East Lincoln coaching staff expects him to have a good year.

The East Lincoln defense held opponents to just under 20 points per game last year, and allowed two touchdowns or less in six of its 12 games.

ond guy. If we put a substitute in at wing and he gets hot, he’s going to play. You play your hot hand.”

Offensive Player to Watch: In-gram/Russell

Cloninger said whoever earns the starting quarterback position will be a hugely important part of the Lincolnton offense. In-gram has more experience after starting at quarterback on junior varsity, but Cloninger said Rus-sell has also been impressive on the practice field.

“This is a quarterback-run of-fense,” Cloninger said. “You have to have someone who can make the correct decision quick-ly. Whichever one shines the

most and does the little things, he’s going to take us as far as we can go.”DEFENSE

Roberts, Roseboro and Fran-cisco Gutierrez make up the front of Lincolnton’s 3-4 base defense. Roberts is 6 foot 3 inches and 230 pounds and Roseboro weighs in a 6 foot 3 inches and 240 pounds. Guti-errez, a junior nose tackle, is 5 foot 11 inches and 190 pounds. Lincolnton has 11 players listed on its roster as potential line-backers, a position Cloninger said is still “up for grabs,” in-cluding seniors Wray and Jose Perez. Anderson, James Wakul-sky, Mobley and Kerin Magness make up Lincolnton’s seniors listed at defensive back.

“The defensive coaching staff

takes its time to find the right people at the right position,” Cloninger said. “It could be a few weeks into the season be-fore we’re settled in. The guys are going to prove it by playing. Coach Ledford Gibson will find the people on defense that will play the positions.”

Defensive Player to Watch: Darian Roseboro

Roseboro and fellow defen-sive lineman Tyron Roberts give Lincolnton a big, strong defen-sive front. Roseboro was named the defensive player of the game at last year’s state champion-ship game, and finished last year with seven sacks, 12 tackles for loss and 107 tackles.

“There are going to be people who run away from Roseboro,” Cloninger said. “When they run away from Roseboro, they’re going to run into Roberts. As an offensive coach, I can still remember telling my quarter-backs that there were certain players you didn’t dare run to-ward. I hope people challenge Roseboro, because I want to see what he’s going to do, and I feel like he’ll meet the challenge.”

on the tight end.“It makes sense from a stand-

point that you only get to play the hand you’re dealt,” he said. “Right now we have players who are better tight-end peo-ple than wide receivers. We’re not the fastest crowd around. It gives us a chance to utilize our personnel.”

The Knights were plagued by turnovers last year, and Maness said one of his goals is keeping the ball “out of harm’s way.”

“We’ve tried to emphasize keeping the quarterback out of tough positions,” he said. “We want to get them in situations

where they can be successful.”The Knights have several

linemen who saw playing time last year — sophomore Colton Beard and juniors Justin Knight and Chase Stehling — because their senior counterparts suf-fered injuries. North Lincoln has two senior offensive line-men in Henry Callaway and Wilson Capps.

Offensive Player to Watch: Cory Blake

Blake brings some very im-portant varsity experience to the North Lincoln offense. He has proven his ability to com-plete passes and carry the ball, and his offensive line will be a key to helping him have a pro-

North Lincoln has a 3-5 base defense, but Maness said he plans to throw in several differ-ent looks.

“Because of the way people play offense now, it’s difficult to say we’re only going to have one package,” he said.

“We won’t play a lot of man coverage but we’ll play a lot of cover-2, cover-3 and cover-4 with some split coverage. We have to take our chances blitz-ing but not hang ourselves out where we get caught trying to cover someone man-to-man.”

Defensive Player to Watch: Paul Regan

Paul Regan started last year for the Knights at linebacker and will have the same responsi-bilities in the upcoming season.

Clay Alguire and Miguel Corella, two players who made an impact for the Rebels at wide receiver last year, are back for their senior seasons.

The Rebels have only two se-niors listed as offensive linemen — Jared Swafford and Adam Helms.

Offensive Player to Watch: Daniel Davila

Davila, at 5 feet 7 inches and 170 pounds, has proven himself to be a leader for the Rebels dur-ing the offseason, in addition to returning as a starter.

“He’s had a great preseason here,” Sain said. “He’s tireless in whatever he does. The hard-er and tougher it is, the better he gets. That’s just the way he is, he’s a hard worker and he has a great attitude.”DEFENSE

The Rebels base their offense on a 3-3 stack, with Jordan Craig (5 foot 11 inches, 250 pounds) at nose tackle and Helms (6 foot 1 inch, 220 pounds) on the de-

fensive line. Senior linebacker Derrick Braun anchors the West Lincoln defense as the signal caller and leader on the field. Jay Harmon, a 5 foot 8 inch se-nior is also listed at linebacker.

“We can get in some different looks out of the 3-3,” Sain said. “A lot of people are throwing the football. We try to put our run stopper in the middle with a good sized lineman. Our tack-les have to be mobile because they have different assignments. They’re not enormous, but they have pretty good size.”

Defensive Player to Watch: Derrick Braun

Braun, as one of the primary leaders on West Lincoln’s de-fense, balanced a summer of football workouts in the morn-ings with American Legion baseball practice each after-noon. Saine said he is best suited at the inside linebacker position, as a three-year varsity starter.

“He finds the football,” Saine said. “He’s the coach on the field, he gets the alignments right. You have to have that per-son out there who is going to take that leadership role.”
