2011 SCHEDULE
RRuusssseellllvviilllleeGolden Tigers
This time of year every high school foot-ball team is ready to cash in on the hothours spent in the August sun by strap-ping on their helmets and hitting an oppo-nent.
That is especially true for Russellville, which hasn’t faced another school sincelosing to Hartselle in the third round of theplayoffs.
Instead of playing in a spring jamboree, the Golden Tigers held an intra-squadscrimmage.
New head coach Michael Jackson isalso eager to see what his players can doagainst another team.
Jackson said the team has made sever-al improvements since spring practice andthey are ready for the season to begin.
In addition to its opponents, Russellvillewill also be facing several critics when theseason begins. The Golden Tigers werenot ranked in the preseason poll andmany football fans across northwest
Alabama expect a lackluster season fromRussellville.
In a reversal of fortunes, the GoldenTigers are looking at the polls as out-siders while region rival Muscle Shoals isenjoying the No. 9 spot in Class 5A.
The drop from the polls is not withoutreason. Russellville lost several playerswho were key in putting together threeyears of deep playoff runs. Three of thoseplayers will be playing on Saturdays thisfall after signing Division I scholarships.
Despite the loss of those players,Jackson is confident his team can contin-ue the tradition of success at Russellville. The Golden Tiger faithful are also eager tosee what this team can do.
The last time everybody expectedRussellville to fail — the 2008 season —the Golden Tigers reached the statechampionship game. Fans want to know ifthe 2011 Russellville football team canpull off the same magical run.

2011 SCHEDULE
PPhhiill CCaammppbbeellllBobcats
Last season the Phil Campbell footballteam was an experienced squad featuring 16seniors, but the Bobcats will not have thatkind of leadership when they take the field in2011.
This year’s team has only five seniors, butthat doesn’t worry head coach Bo Culver, because the juniors are entering their thirdseason in his system.
“The juniors were freshmen when I gothere,” Culver said. “I’m excited about whatwe’ve got.”
The Bobcats will have the challenge ofreplacing a potent passing attack. Gone arequarterback Corey Alexander and receiversDylan Rice — an All-State HonorableMention last season — as well as Jake Dilland Jordan Benford.
Tyson Sumerel takes over at quarterback.Culver said Sumerel has a good understand-ing of the offense after backing up Alexanderlast year and that should help the offense
click. Jamie Dorroh is projected to be theBobcats’ top receiving target. Culver said hepossesses good speed and is a playmaker.
The only skill player returning that account-ed for a good chunk of the offense last sea-son is running back Craig Saint.
“He’s as strong as an ox,” Culver said.“When he wants to, he can bowl people over.”
Anchoring the offensive line will be centerTrevor Allison, who missed most of last sea-son with an injury. Culver said Allison is eagerto get on the field during his senior season.
Defensively, the Bobcats will also have torecover from heavy losses.
Dorroh will provide some experience in thesecondary, but Colton Vickery and Kody Ortizare first-year players.
Brady Whitten, which Culver describes as ahard-nosed, tough-as-nails player, is a three-year starter at linebacker.
Austin Mercer will help anchor the defen-sive line.

COACH
2011 SCHEDULE
TigersRReedd BBaayyRed Bay football coach Dale Jeffreys said
there are several reasons for fans to get excit-ed about the Tigers’ 2011 season.
The team has a starting quarterback withtwo previous years of starting experience andthe defense will be in the second year of a sys-tem that put up impressive numbers in 2010.
“Last year we were four plays away from fin-ishing 9-1,” Jeffreys said. “We have a lot moreplaymakers this year who can make thoseplays.”
While the Tigers have some playmakers onthe roster, there is one area they must avoid tohave a good season — turnovers.
“We can’t make mistakes and turn the ballover,” Jeffreys said. “That is what killed us lastyear.”
While the Tigers lost a couple of runningbacks, there are several experienced playersreturning to the offense.
Hunter Childers will be quarterbacking RedBay for the third straight season while juniorMatt Bellue will be the feature running back.Childers will have a trio of speedy receivers to
throw to in Dmitri Humphrey, Taylor Ozbirn andAustin Humphries.
Seniors Ethan Blanton and Chance Wootenwill anchor the offensive line.
Defensively, senior Bradley Patterson andBelue will give Red Bay a pair of strongdefense ends. The linebacking corps is alsoexperienced with juniors Steven Wood andJustin Payne along with senior Kyle Robbins.
Humphrey and Ozbirn will also play in thesecondary for the Tigers.
The experience Red Bay has will be crucial ifthe Tigers want to extend their playoff streak to13 years.
While there is quite a bit of experience,Jeffreys said there would not be as many play-ers seeing time on both offense and defense. That means there will be some young playerson the field for Red Bay, but that does notworry Jeffreys.
“We’re playing more kids, who have beenplaying since they were younger,” Jeffreyssaid. “We are looking forward to seeing whatthey can do.”

COACH
2011 SCHEDULE
TThhaarrppttoowwnnWildcats
Usually the second year of a coach’s tenurewith a program is a little smoother than the firstyear. Players have had a year to absorb thenew system and are more familiar with whatthe coach expects.
Tharptown’s Bill Smith faces a tough situa-tion during his second season with theWildcats. Tharptown lost 10 seniors from lastyear’s team, and will only have 18 varsity play-ers in 2011.
“The numbers are not good,” Smith said. “Butwe’ve got good kids and I expect a lot out ofthem.”
One of the problems many fans will notice isthat most of the skill players from last seasonare gone. Multiple threat players such asJacob Parker and Brandon Cothrum will nolonger be suiting up for the Wildcats this fall.
Kelby Hallmark, Nick Long and TimothyBryant will all take turns at different positions togive Tharptown the best match-ups eachweek. While there will be some quality athletesat the skill positions, Smith said there is onearea of the offense that he is unsure about.
“The question is the line,” Smith said. “Theoffensive line wasn’t strong last year.”
William Washington and Brian George willbe the anchors on the line.
With only 18 players, Tharptown will have toplay many members of the team on offenseand defense, so the line could be a problem onthat side of the ball as well.
The Wildcats gave up several long runs toopponents last season, a problem that led tosome lopsided losses.
“We hope to improve on defense this year,”Smith said.
Hallmark will be in the secondary to protectagainst the pass and Bryant will be at line-backer to try and stop the run.
Smith is hoping the defense will cometogether by the opening game against Meek,a team that had several long runs against theWildcats last year. The summer workouts didnot go as well as Smith would have liked, buthe is pleased with the effort in fall camp.
“The players are out in the heat workinghard,” Smith said.

Red DevilsBeing one of the smallest public schools
in the state can present a few problems, especially when you are trying to puttogether a football team.
Vina is feeling the crunch this fall, as theRed Devils have only 15 varsity players. Ithurts even more that Vina lost seven sen-iors from last year’s team.
Head coach James Pharr is making thebest of the situation though and is notallowing the players to use the small ros-ter as an excuse not to work hard.
“We’ve got to count on our seniors andskill players to do something,” Pharr said.“When called on, they have to make aplay.”
Fortunately for the Red Devils, many ofthe skill players from last season areback. Quarterback Nick Schmittou andwide receivers Adam Pharr and ClayPierce, as well as running back EthanPharr, give the Red Devils quite a bit ofexperience.
The biggest holes Vina needs to fill are
along the offensive and defensive lines, but Pharr has faith in the players he hasand said Casey Poores, Blake Townsendand Adam Wilson will do a good job on thelines.
While the low numbers do present achallenge — Pharr decided not to play afall jamboree game to reduce the likeli-hood of injuries — Pharr said he seessome good signs in his team.
“They are coachable this year,” Pharrsaid. “They are also in better shape thanlast year.”
Pharr said being in shape will be the keyto Vina’s success this season and a goodway to prevent injuries. The Red Devilsget a good dose of conditioning drillseveryday at the end of practice to makesure they are fit when the season starts.
Pharr said he likes the effort he hasseen from his team this fall.
“They are few in numbers, but they looklike they can play,” Pharr said. “I am proudof them.”

Lions facing challenge in depleted GSCDepending on your point of
view, the University of NorthAlabama’s road to a GulfSouth Conference title in2011 has never been easier— or more difficult.
After all of the Arkansas-based members of the confer-ence left, the GSC is barelyhanging on with five membersplaying football.
With the Lions having to playfewer conference games, itwould be easier for them to goundefeated in the GSC andearn the title.
Unfortunately for UNA, twoof the conference’s bestteams — Delta State andValdosta State — are still inthe GSC.
The Lions were chosen inthe coaches’ poll to finish sec-ond in the conference.
UNA will have an experi-enced quarterback leadingthe offense in Lee Chapple,
but he will not the big-namereceivers he had last year.Even so, UNA coach TerryBowden thinks the passingattack can be potent.
“I like the possibilities evenwithout the great big-nameguy,” Bowden said.
Relieving some of the pres-sure from Chapple will be run-ning backs Wes Holland, whoranked eighth in rushing in theGSC last season, andDemetrius Goode, a transferfrom the University ofAlabama.
There are only two returningstarters on defense — line-backer John Ware and defen-sive back Rod Woodson.
Just as in previous years,Bowden has boosted theteams needs with Division Itransfers. He brought in for-mer Florida defensive backJanoris Jenkins to help out inthe secondary.

32The Game Plan
Alabama’s title hopes could rest on defenseLast year Alabama was so close to
posting a third consecutive undefeat-ed regular season.
Yes, the Crimson Tide lost to SouthCarolina, LSU and Auburn, but thosethree losses were by a combined totalof 18 points.
Ask any member of the defense andthey will be quick to tell you the prob-lem the Tide had last season was fin-ishing games. The loss that stung themost was the 28-27 loss to Auburn inwhich the Tide let a 24-point lead slipaway.
Members of the defense will also tellyou that not finishing games will notbe an issue in 2011.
“As a defense we didn’t finish in thatAuburn game,” said safety MarkBarron. “Never again will we go outand not finish like we did in thatAuburn game.”
Linebacker Dont’a Hightower alsothinks this year’s defense will not onlyfinish games, but will also go down asone of the best defenses in Alabamahistory.
“We have one of the most athleticdefenses that’s been throughAlabama,” Hightower said. “Last year,we lacked the speed part, gettingafter the quarterback. This year, Ithink it’s what our defense is about.”
The defense will have to play strongfor Alabama this season since theoffense lost several key componentsof its recent success.
Heisman Trophy winner MarkIngram is gone, as is the potent pass-ing combination of Greg McElroy andJulio Jones.
The Crimson Tide’s offense is notentirely depleted — running backTrent Richardson is back, and he isgetting early talk about being aHeisman favorite.
“I love all the expectations,”Richardson said. “At the end of theday I want to live up to that.”
If he does live up to the expectationsand the defense plays as well as theyare capable of doing, Alabama fansmight just get what they want this fall— another national championship.

33The Game Plan
Auburn loses many starters, still optimisticUsually winning a national champi-
onship brings a lot of perks to yourprogram. You get a boost in recruitingand you typically get a high rankingin the polls at the start of the nextseason.
While Auburn has not had muchproblem drawing in recruits in theGene Chizik era, the Tigers did notget much love from poll voters tostart the 2011 campaign.
Auburn is ranked No. 19 in the USAToday Poll.
The biggest reason for the drop inthe poll is the perceived drop in thetalent level in Auburn. HeismanTrophy winning quarterback CamNewton and Lombardi Trophy win-ning defensive tackle Nick Fairley areboth in NFL training camps right now.
But they are not the only membersof the national championship teammissing — Auburn lost 18 startersfrom last year’s squad. The Tigerslost eight starters on offense, eighton defense and two on specialteams.
Defensive tackle Nosa Eguae, oneof the three returning starters ondefense, said people are overlookingAuburn.
“I think a lot of people in the media, they get misconstrued that beingyoung is a lack of talent, and it’s notat Auburn,” Eguae said. “We have alot of talent, and come Sept. 3 we’relooking to show off that talent on astage.”
Tight end Philip Lutzenkirchen saidit does not bother him that peoplethink the Tigers will have a bad sea-son.
“(The off-season workouts) aregood like last year. People are under-estimating us. It’s where we want tobe,” Lutzenkirchen said. “I wouldrather prove people wrong thanprove them right.”
The Tigers have a lot of work to doto challenge for the Western Divisiontitle, let alone a conference or nation-al title. But one thing Auburn provedrepeatedly last year is that the Tigerslove the role of the underdog.

34The Game Plan
200910-3 overall, 6-2 in the SEC – Second in
the SEC Western Division
Projected finishThird in the Western Division
BrieflyThe Razorbacks are coming off their
first trip to a BCS bowl game and arepoised to return to another in BobbyPetrino’s fourth season at Arkansas. Those hopes took a hit in fall practice asrunning back Knile Davis suffered a sea-son-ending injury.
Key players returningGreg Childs (WR), Joe Adams (WR),
Jake Bequette (DE) and Tramain Thomas(S). The Razorbacks return 15 startersfrom last year’s team.
Key lossesRyan Mallett (QB), D.J. Williams (TE),

Key lossesMike Pouncy (C), Ahmad Black (S),
Janoris Jenkins (CB) and Justin Trattou(DE). The Gators lost 12 starters fromlast year’s team.
Coach says“I think more than anything, if it’s not
broke, don’t fix it. Urban (Meyer) did aphenomenal job, he and his staff. They
did some great things that we’re going tocontinue to do. There were some thingsthat were very good at Florida. Whychange ‘em if they are working?
“But obviously from a scheme stand-point, we feel a little differently defen-sively, do a little different offensively.Special teams, there will be a lot of con-tinutiy”
Will Muschamp
Players say“(Coach Will Muschamp) is very
intense. You’ve seen him on highlights atTexas, chest bumping his players. He’s agreat coach, great defensive coach.Great intensity and he’s brought that tothe team. We needed that, that giddyup.”
Quaterback John Brantley
“I think everybody has a chip on theirshoulder. We want to be our best everySaturday and get back to Atlanta.”
Defensive End William Green
You might not knowFlorida holds the national record for
consecutive games scoring a touch-down on a pass. The Gators scored apassing touchdown from Oct. 1, 1992through Oct. 4, 1997 – a span of 62games.
Coach says“We obviously will try to build on last
year. Very proud of last year, but we dounderstand that this is a new team.We willhave to find out a lot about ourselves aswe get started practicing here and find outwhat is going to make us the type of foot-ball team that we were a year ago.”
Bobby Petrino
Players say“I wouldn’t say our preseason expecta-
tions have changed. We’ve had the samegoals for two years now. We are comingback with the same goals we had last yearand that’s to play for an SECChampionship and to play for the NationalChampionship.”
Wide Receiver Jarius Wright
“On defense we have made a lot ofplays, but we know that we have so muchmore to achieve. We’re just going to per-fect what coach (Willy) Robinson has instore for us with the game plan.”
Defensive End Tenarius Wright
You might not knowArkansas has played in the three
longest games in NCAA history. It tookseven overtime periods for theRazorbacks to defeat Ole Miss 58-56 in2001 and seven overtime periods todefeat Kentucky 71-63 in 2003. TheRazorbacks lost to Tennessee 41-38 in sixovertime periods in 2002.
201010-3 overall, 5-3 in the SEC – Fourth in
the SEC Western Division
Projected finishFirst in the Western Division
BrieflyExpectations are high for the Crimson
Tide in 2011. Two years removed from anational championship, Alabama isfavored as the best team in the SECdespite losing several important playerson offense.
Key players returningTrent Richardson (RB), Barrett Jones
(OL), Dont’a Hightower (LB) and MarkBarron (S). The Crimson Tide return 18starters from last year’s team.
Key lossesMark Ingram (RB), Greg McElroy (QB),
Julio Jones (WR) and Marcell Darius (DL).The Crimson Tide lost seven starters fromlast year’s team.
201014-0 overall, 8-0 in the SEC – First in the
SEC Western Division, beat SouthCarolina in the SEC ChampionshipGame, beat Oregon in the BCS NationalChampionship Game
Projected finishFifth in the Western Division
BrieflyThe Tigers are coming off a national
championship season, but much of the tal-ent that earned Auburn its first title in morethan 50 years is gone, including HeismanTrophy winner Cam Newton and LombardiTrophy winner Nick Fairley.
Key players returningMichael Dyer (RB), Brandon Mosely
(OL), Nosa Eguae (DE) and Neiko Thorpe(CB). The Tigers return six starters fromlast year’s team.
Key lossesCam Newtown (QB), Darvin Adams
(WR), Nick Fairley (DT) and Josh Bynes
(LB). The Tigers lost 18 starters from lastyear’s team.
Coach says“So the journey from this point in time
last year to now has been incredible for us.But...the minute our plane hit the ground inMontgomery on Jan. 11, we had movedon. We have been focused and locked insolely on the 2011 football season.”
Gene Chizik
Players say“I don’t think the numbers will go down
this year, especially in the passing game. They should go up, the rushing yardsmight go down, but if you look at GusMalzahn’s offense over the six years he’sbeen a college coach, his teams scorepoints.”
Wide Receiver Emory Blake
“I think a lot of people in the media, theyget misconstrued that being young is alack of talent, and it’s not at Auburn. Wehave a lot of talent, and come Sept. 3,we’re looking to show that talent on astage.”
Defensive Tackle Nosa Eguae
You might not knowOf the opponents on the 2011 schedule,
Auburn has a losing record to only two ofthem. Auburn is 34-40-1 against Alabamaand 20-24-1 against LSU.
Coach says“We’ve had a very good off-season. We
have a little bit more maturity, a little betterleadership on this team, a little more expe-rience in a lot of ways.”
Nick Saban
Players say“I love all the expectations. At the end of
the day, I want to live up to that. I want tobe able to say like ‘Hey, I did that’ or ‘Wedid that.’ At the same time, it’s hardbecause you’ve got a big target on yourback, but that’s nothing to be scared of.”
