VIEW FROM THE

VICE

COMMODORE

Joe Coleman

In Retirement

As with every New Year, our resolution is to do more sailing this year. The club has a very active 2012 cruis-ing schedule which should make it very easy to keep that New Year’s resolution. However we all know that “things” will get in the way. We have already had to postpone our Bahamas cruise for another year because of some of those “things” that are in the way. I am not saying that “things” aren’t important or that they should be disregarded. I’m just saying, they get in the way.

Looking back over the years, I am reminded of some of the things that kept us from cruising - like work. I took care of that last year by retiring (which Karen had done a few years earlier). I can remember Karen saying that when she retired she was so busy that she didn’t know how she got anything done when she was working. Just about every retired person I know has told me the same thing. I didn’t want to fall into that trap with all the others, so I studied the whole retirement thing and came up with this simple answer: our standards change once we retire. That’s right, our standards, or what we will accept or not accept.

For example, while I was working, the garden on the right side of the house seemed just fine. Lilies popped up all the time and things were good. Now that I have retired, I have decided that I don’t like the way those lilies look after all and have begun digging them out. Before retiring I thought the louvered doors (of which we have 30 panels throughout the house) looked great. Once I retired I convinced myself that they all needed to be sanded and re-stained, so I have been busy doing that. I am not even going to mention the bedroom makeovers or the garage cleanup. I think you get the picture.

I have seen some retirees who appear to have this re-tirement thing figured out. The secret is that they don’t care what people think. So the house needs painting; who cares? If it bothers other people so much, maybe they should come and paint it for you. As for the yard, let it grow until the county comes and cuts it every three months. Yeah, they will charge you, but not as much as a weekly lawn guy. And who says green is not a be-coming color for a swimming pool? I must admit that Karen does not share my views here; these are strictly mine. So if I want “us” to go sailing more, then I need to keep her opinion in mind and modify my plan or go back to work. I’m all about compromise.

As promised in the last newsletter I have a quick sum-mary of the survey and what changes the board has made or considered. The overwhelming responses to

THOUGHTS FROM

YOUR COMMODORE

John Geraci

It’s Always Something

Last weekend, we had invited some friends over for a relaxing cruise out on the river, but before they arrived, I decided that my impeller and oil needed to be changed. Having a 37-year-old engine, I change the oil every 100 hours and I was 11 hours over my limit. So I went to fire up the engine to warm the oil to pump it out but there was no water flow out the exhaust. Uh-oh.

Usually, there is some buildup around the exit of the heat exchanger that I have to clear out and then the water flows with good volume out the back. This time, however, I decided that the impeller needed attention first, so I pulled the old one out and replaced it with a new one – holding my mouth just right to catch the slot for the key and get the vanes all pointing the correct way. After a quick trip to the local hardware store (it’s not a good job unless you make several trips), I applied the newly pur-chased gasket goo to the raw water cover and put it in place.

Reading the directions on the goo, I noticed that I had to wait an hour before cranking down the cover. Now my guests were due to arrive in a half hour, so I let it go as long as possible and then set the cover into position. When I turned on the valve for the engine water, water poured out of my pump! Now I’m thinking that I should have waited the full hour, so I shut off the valve, ripped off the cover and cleaned off all of the previous goo and applied more goo and waited the full hour. I cranked down the bolts, turned on the valve and discovered that water poured out even more!

Now I’m concerned – my guests (Bob Wiley and Robert and Cherie Baird) were now sitting in the cockpit while I checked out the situation. I had to make the decision that we were not going on that delightful cruise after all. Everyone retired to the patio while I went off to research the pump replacement.

I had determined that the water was pouring out of the vent holes in the pump body – clearly a bad seal. After searching all kinds of sites, I came across one that had a rebuild kit (they don’t make my pump anymore), so I an-ted up for that and when it arrived three days later, I was prepared. The pump was out of the boat and disassem-bled after many colorful metaphors.

At that point I realized that the bearings needed to be pressed off and I didn’t have that kind of equipment. Joe Coleman tried to help with a bearing puller, but we were not making progress. We headed over to Carp Industries where they pressed the new bearings plus the seal into the pump. I ran back to the store (of course) to get differ-ent goo that doesn’t take an hour to dry, rejoined the

Marlene Sassaman: It is my intent to make my first offshore voyage from Palm Bay to New York Harbor, returning via Bermuda. Weather permitting I will set sail on Memorial Day and return in mid July. My boat is a Marples 35 Tri. I have one crew for the hop from NY to Bermu-da and am looking for compatible crew for the other legs of the journey. This is my first long offshore cruise and I wel-come suggestions as I continue to up-grade my boat while plotting my course. [email protected]

Joe and Karen Coleman: Can’t go to the Bahamas? Don’t cry to your mamas. Join us on a cruise to St. Augustine in late March. We plan to leave on Wednesday, March 21st, stopping at Ti-tusville and Daytona, and arriving in St. Augustine late Friday afternoon. We will stay there until Wednesday and then head back to meet at Squid Lips for the club’s monthly cruise (March 31-April 1). If interested in joining us, contact Joe (321-223-6871) or Karen (321-795-5588) or email us at [email protected].

Mardi Gras

Cruise February 25-26

Bob Wiley

Plan on attending the Mardi Gras Cruise to Cocoa Village with us on the last weekend in February. Tickets are required to be in the parade enclosure for a close look at the floats and to collect beads. Tickets can be purchased in advance for $8.00 online following instructions at https://tickets.completeticketsolutions.com/CCB/Online/default.asp or at one of the businesses listed on http://www.cocoamardigras.com/index.php?page=tickets. If you wait until parade day, the price is $12.00 at the gate.

If you would like a slip at the Cocoa Village Marina, reserve early and be sure to let them know you are with ECSA. Ask for the club rate of $1.25/ft. If you anchor out, there will be someone to meet you at the dinghy docks at 5:00 p.m. to help you tie up and make the hike to the restaurant. Jerry Sansom has again generously offered to let members tie up at his dock at 225 Rockledge Dr. as an alternate (Google it to get a map).

There will be a group dinner at 5:30 p.m. at Nor-man's Raw Bar and Grill Restaurant, 3 Forrest Ave, Cocoa (http://normansbarandgrill.com/), prior to the parade, which should start at 9:00 p.m. A pot -luck breakfast is planned for 8:30 a.m. Sunday (26 Feb) at the Cocoa Village Marina Clubhouse.

Please sign up at the February ECSA meeting or call/email the host prior to 22 February so that we can have enough seats reserved at the restaurant.

what you wanted more of at meetings was social time with fellow sailors and some more interesting programs on boat matters and trips people take. The board has discussed these issues and will start having social nights instead of a program more of-ten. This will allow our program chairperson, Clay Bernichon, who has done a great job for us in the past, to find the kind of programs you want. As far as trip adventures, I ask each and every one of you who has taken an interesting boating trip to contact Clay and volunteer to give us a talk about your ad-venture. It doesn’t have to be fancy with power points, background music and dancing girls (although the dancing girls may add to the attend-ance) - just some pictures and your memories of the trip. Nothing gets people more interested in taking a trip than someone with a good story plant-ing the seed.

There are certain parts of the business meeting that we cannot cut from the program. We do try and keep them to a minimum. We plan to update the directory next year (too late for this year’s edition) to include more pictures of club members on the cruis-es, racing or other ECSA activities. The club has a very active cruising schedule this year which should allow for more participation by its members.

Some of the things that we can’t do are: move the meetings to Titusville, fix your boat, buy you a big-ger boat or increase your mate’s interest in sailing. What we can do is share our experiences and knowledge with you through club participation and sailing camaraderie. Hope to see you on the water soon.

pump to the engine and turned on the valve. I held my breath and looked for leaks – none! I cleaned out the heat exchanger exit (thoroughly clogged) and started the engine, and water was once again flowing out the back. Whew!

Now I still have to change the oil and, oh by the way, I have to repair my bow pulpit, my masthead wind transducer needs service, and our guest bath-room has flooded the house…

See you, eventually, out on the water,

COMMODORE’S THOUGHTS (continued from page 2)

Vero Beach New Year Review Karen Coleman

Once again a band of ECSA sailors made their way down the ICW to Vero Beach to welcome the New Year. We (Joe and Karen on Alibi) set off on Wednesday with Chip and Louise Worster (Chip Ahoy) and anchored off of Captain Hiram’s in Sebastian. Although I was prepared to cook supper on the boat, it took little persuasion for me to agree to dine ashore. It got quite cold that night and we had no heat at anchor, so it was hard to get out of bed the next morning, but it did warm up as we headed south. We checked into the City Marina and watched for others to join us. Others that came by boat were Al and Joyce Harmon (Seaduction), Bob and Adrianne Goldstein (Restless) and Robert LaLime, who now keeps L’Esperance there.

Vero Beach has much to offer cruisers. The facilities are clean and well-maintained. The neighborhoods near the marina are beautiful for walking or biking. I always bring my folding bike and it has come in handy for last minute visits to the small grocery store a couple of miles away. The free bus is wonderful – one stop has West Marine on one side of the street for the sailors, with Publix and TJMaxx on the other side for the ladies. There are plenty of places to eat. One morning some of us took the bus to eat breakfast at 20021, another morning we walked to the Lemon Tree for breakfast, yet another morning we took our traditional dinghy ride to a beachside park that serves breakfast on New Year’s Day (and also ice cream!). We spent our time in various ways with varied company, but we all met for New Year’s Eve dinner in the picnic area, joined by Kay Sparrow and Jacob. As usual, when it was dark we all thought it was much later than it actually was, and we ended up dispersing by 8 p.m. However Joe and I have been playing a lot of Rummikub lately and we kept playing “one more game” until midnight. It was the first time in a long time that we were able to stay up for the New Year and when we looked out we saw that we were the only ones who had done so.

On New Year’s Day Bob Wiley drove John and Lynda Geraci down to join us for dinner at the Riverside restaurant near the marina. We hadn’t made reservations and the restaurant was full of people staying put to watch the football games, so we ended up eating dinner in two shifts. That was our only disappointment in the whole trip. We knew the beautiful weather we were having would turn cold quickly, so Seaduction left New Year’s Day and Chip Ahoy and Alibi left at first light the next day, almost making it home before the front moved in. Only Restless stayed behind a few cold days longer. All in all it was another great cruise.

River Racing Update

For many years ECSA has run keel boat races, both a co-ed and a women's series, just north of the Eau Gallie Causeway and Dragon Point. Melbourne Yacht Club recently approached the ECSA Board and asked to take over the racing program. ECSA has agreed to allow the program to be run by Melbourne. If you are a racer or want to be, the Melbourne Yacht Club will continue the series format in the same area. In addition to the courses that have been run in recent years, Melbourne will be organizing a racing fleet for the cruising interests, to meet requests for longer courses and less "stressful" racing. They continue to have two series per year each for co-ed racing and wom-en's racing. The schedule, instructions and registration forms are at www.sail-race.com.

Please note that it is NOT necessary to be a member of any club to participate in the races or to win awards. Just complete the registration form for the upcoming series and submit it along with the modest registration fee. All of the information is on the website. If you have any questions call Lynde Edwards (MYC Fleet Captain) at 321-704-1413.
