The  Beginnings    Food  photography  like  all  s8ll  life  photography,  it  has  its  origins  from  s8ll  life  pain8ng.  Although  as  it  evolved  over  8me  in  turned  into  a  commercial  genre  used  to  adver8ses  and  sell  food  products.  In  recent  years  the  idea  of  photographing  food  has  been  taken  on  by  the  consumer  side  of  the  market  in  the  blogging  world  and  by  those  on  social  media  plaDorms  such  as  Pinterest  and  Instagram.      S8ll  life  pain8ngs  of  the  17th  century  draw  aHen8on  to  food  as  having  a  natural  beauty.  The  genre  of  s8ll  life  pain8ng  with  food  can  be  traced  back  to  the  16th  century  but  it  wasn’t  un8l  the  17th  century  that  it  became  well  know  through  out  Europe.

Vanessa  Rees  Vanessa  Rees  is  a  food  and  lifestyle  photographer  who  works  out  of  Brooklyn.  Vanessa  has  work  for  such  as  Ralph  Lauren,  Food  and  Wine  Magazine  and  Crane  &  Co.      Vanessa’s  food  photography  is  mostly  loca8on  based  with  a  combina8on  of  over  head  and  side  on  shots.  The  over  head  shots  will  usually  consist  the  food  item  along  with  the  ruminants  of  the  making  process.  Some  of  these  though  look  as  if  it  could  have  been  photographed  in  a  studio.  Many  of  the  side  on  shots  show  the  food  item  along  with  a  small  part  of  the  background  so  that  it  hints  at  loca8on.

Tim  Hill  Tim  Hill  is  a  commercial  and  stock  food  photographer.  From  going  through  his  online  porDolio  I  have  no8ced  he  prefers  to  have  a  loca8on  built  up  around  the  food  item(s).  Its  hard  to  say  whether  his  photos  have  been  taken  using  ar8ficial  light  or  natural  light  from  a  window.  If  the  photos  where  done  with  natural  light  then  I  believe  a  reflector  must  have  been  used  since  the  ligh8ng  is  coming  from  more  than  one  direc8on.  If  its  ar8ficial  ligh8ng  then  mul8ply  lights  can  be  used  to  get  an  all  around  effect.

Carl  Warner  Carl  Warner  crates  images  from  food  for  commercials  and  other  pieces  of  work.  For  much  of  his  work  Carl  Warner  will  set  a  camera  up  and  work  from  the  perspec8ve  of  the  camera  to  create  an  image.  Of  course  unlike  Vanessa  Rees  and  David  Lo\us,  Carl  work  is  studio  based.    Carl  Warner  has  done  adver8sing  work  for  Uncle  Ben’s  and  Colman’s.  Along  with  his  photographic  work  Carl  has  also  done  TV  adverts  for  Glenfiddich  whisky  and  BeHy  Crocker.

David  Lo\us  David  Lo\us  is  known  for  his  work  with  TV  chef  Jamie  Oliver.  Along  with  his  professional  level  work,  David  uses  Instagram  as  plaDorm  to  present  himself  on  the  go.  From  going  though  his  photo  gallery  on  his  main  website  and  his  Instagram  profile,  I  have  no8ced  that  he  o\en  photographs  food  in  the  same  way  whether  using  a  camera  or  a  phone.  David  Lo\us’s  most  preferred  angle  of  approach  is  above  the  food  and  with  even  ligh8ng  to  show  all  aspects  of  the  food.      For  over  20  years  David  has  photographed  over  100  books  including  Jamie  Oliver’s  interna8onal  best  sellers.  David  published  his  own  book  called  “Around  The  World  in  80  Dishes”.
