FOODBANK SA IS A NON-PROFIT, NON-DENOMINATIONAL ORGANISATION. WE ARE PART OF THE NATIONAL FOODBANK MOVEMENT, FIGHTING HUNGER IN SOUTH AUSTRALIA, NEW SOUTH WALES, VICTORIA, WESTERN AUSTRALIA, QUEENSLAND, TASMANIA AND NORTHERN TERRITORY.

OUR MISSION IS TO DELIVER NUTRITIOUS, HEALTHY FOOD TO PEOPLE WHO ARE EXPERIENCING HARDSHIP.

OUR FUNDAMENTAL BELIEF IS THAT NO ONE SHOULD GO HUNGRY.

OUR KEY AREAS OF WORK

Community Foodhubs

Not having money to buy food for your family is a devastating feeling. Not being able to go to a supermarket and choose the items you want strikes right into one’s dignity and it is one of the many issues related with Food Insecurity. We developed the Foodhubs to provide those who are in need with a dignified experience of visiting a general store environment that offers choice and provides much greater value for money. Individuals are assessed by welfare partners who issue them with a voucher. This voucher allows them to access and shop at our Foodhubs in Bowden and Edwardstown. A new Foodhub along with the existing ones will continue to be supported thanks to a State Government grant in the years ahead.

Core Staples

Sourcing Core Staples is the basis of Foodbank’s work. Core staples are the items that everyone should have in their pantries. Those long-life shelf products that we all grew up with: baked beans, rice, pasta, pasta sauces, breakfast cereal, long life milk, tinned fruit and veggies. We source our Core Staples through a number of different ways:

• our relationship with the local and national Food Industry, retailers and producers enables us to get donations;

• individuals, schools and workplaces run Food Drives;

• cash donations from companies and community groups which are used to buy much needed staples;

• a nation-wide Key Staple Program puts together a number of different companies to manufacture specific products;

On top of that we buy a considerable number of items at discounted rates to make sure that we are able to offer healthy and nutritious food to those who otherwise would go without.

Country and regional outreach

South Australia’s extensive geographic area poses some logistical and operational challenges to reach those in rural and outback communities that need food relief services. Our regional branches in Mount Gambier, Berri and Whyalla support their respective regions. We also supply the stock for a regional food hub in Port Pirie. Developing our regional reach is one of the key strategic goals for the year ahead as we look at innovative solutions to expand our outreach.

School Breakfast Programs

When you are hungry, you can’t be at your best. Going to school hungry affects a child’s ability to concentrate, to learn and to achieve. This can lead up to dire consequences throughout their lives. A key area of Foodbank’s work is to source and acquire food items to support 240 School Breakfast Programs across Adelaide’s metro, regional and country areas. Common items available are Breakfast Cereal, Long Life Milk, Spreads like Jam and Vegemite, Tinned and Fresh Fruit and Yogurt. Through a partnership with organisations like Kick Start For Kids and Red Cross the items are delivered making a difference to their lives – and ensuring a better future for all of us.

Fruit and Veg for all

Through an innovative partnership with the Adelaide Produce Market established in August 2013, we were able to secure a 1,000m2 warehouse which became the symbol of our commitment to offer a healthy choice to our welfare partners. At our Foodbank’s Fruit & Veg Centre we source donations from fresh produce wholesalers to distribute via our warehouses and foodhubs. We go even further by nurturing relationships with growers and packing sheds in the Riverland, Adelaide Hills and Virginia regions to source produce straight from the farm to our Fruit & Veg Centre. At Foodbank, fresh produce is distributed at no charge. In 2013/2014, more than 375,000 kg of local fruit & veg came through our doors straight to welfare agencies, community kitchens and schools. Our aim is to expand the Fruit & Veg program to provide 1 million kilos of Fruit & Veg to those in need each year.

A word from Greg Pattinson Foodbank SA Chief Executive

In August 2014, I had the privilege to succeed Richard Pagliaro as Chief Executive Officer of Foodbank SA. Under Richard’s leadership, we increased our activities to the point where we are now the largest supplier of food relief in the state. Our standing and awareness within the community has been enhanced, particularly amongst food providers, welfare agencies, businesses and government. We are now operating under a sustainable business model, with access to appropriate resources to be able to meet future demand.

Some of our key achievements across the year included:• Establishing Community Food Hubs in Bowden, Port Pirie

and Edwardstown • Increasing fruit and vegetables volumes into the community• Maintaining our ‘fruit and veg is free’ policy• Launching a facility at the Adelaide Produce Markets with

the objective of growing fruit and vegetable volumes to one million kilos over the next three years

• Increasing our School Breakfast Program to over 240 schools• Introducing a successful trial program to provide free weekly

fruit and vegetables to schools • Supporting the development of APY indigenous food

organisation Mai Wiru to become a financially self-sustaining social enterprise providing lower cost healthy food to remote communities

• Raising $1 million in tied and untied fundraising • Gaining $1 million in support over four years from

State Government• Gaining $360,000 in support over three years from a

philanthropic group• Strengthening our relationship with Port Adelaide Football

Club and providing a basis for maintaining the relationship for the next three years

• Establishing robust financial controls and reporting• Launching new national branding

Our objective in 2015 is to build on the foundations established over the past year. We will increase the volume of food delivered by broadening our geographic footprint utilising both permanent and temporary facilities. We will aim to strengthen and further develop our partnerships within the SA Food Industry in order to secure locally produced food. We will also seek to enhance the opportunities for volunteers in all areas of our operations and ensure that their experience with Foodbank SA is rewarding.

Along with the SA management team, I am excited about the future of Foodbank SA. We remain committed to achieving our goal that no person in SA should be hungry.

This year’s Annual report signifies something very different in the history of Foodbank SA.

It’s the first report since our inception that hasn’t been written by Stephen Gerlach. After 17 years of outstanding leadership, Stephen has stepped down as Chair.

Stephen has helped to build an organisation that is now South Australia’s largest food relief agency. Since 1997, our ability to meet the needs of hungry people across the state has been transformed. We now work with a greater number and diversity of welfare agencies that rely on Foodbank as the primary source of food for their relief operations, and we do this from a significantly expanded base of outlets in metropolitan Adelaide and rural communities.

Stephen has been passionate about finding a lasting way of ending hunger in our community. He leaves an impressive legacy; he and all South Australians should feel justly proud of his achievements.

The past year has also seen the departure of our Chief Executive Officer, Richard Pagliaro. Having originally served as a director, Richard injected a great deal of life and creativity to our operations. He encouraged us to think imaginatively – whether in finding new sources for the donation of food, raising money or involving welfare agencies in the delivery of relief.

Richard initiated our ground breaking relationship with the Port Adelaide Football Club. It’s a relationship that has, like Port Power’s recent success, gone from strength to strength.

Richard oversaw the growth in our school breakfast program with our key service partners and he also took charge of community food banking as a new approach to food distribution to those in need.

We have been fortunate in securing the services of Greg Pattinson to replace Richard and help Foodbank through our next period of growth and change.

I would like to thank all Board members for their invaluable contribution throughout the year. The personal commitment of Board members has enabled us to strengthen our fundraising and helped build our operations in regional South Australia. Their contribution was also instrumental in us opening an exciting new venture with the Adelaide Produce Markets as we strive to achieve our target of securing one million kilos of donated fresh fruit and vegetables. I would like to extend my gratitude too for those who have been generous with their time to maintain our growing regional operations in the Riverland, Mount Gambier and Whyalla.
