The traditional Costa Rica dish is called a “casado”: like a typical breakfast, the meal is a mix of items like black beans and rice or gallo pinto, fried plantains, a chunk of Costa Rican cheese, salad, and a meat item, usually fish, beef or chicken.

“Casados” are served with tortillas for wrapping. Other popular Costa Rica meals include black bean soup (sometimes served with a hardboiled egg), heart of palm salad, and seafood in any form.

American food

Food in the United States is as diverse as the geography and the people that live here. Each region has its particular style of cooking or special dish, and each dish has a history that intertwines with both the geography and people. When traveling throught the United States, it is important to remember that just beneath the surface is actually an enormous variety of foods and traditions.

Dinner is considered the main meal of the day, usually served after 5:00 p.m but before 10:30. Breakfast and lunch are usually light and/or rushed during weekdays, but during the weekends or special occasions, breakfast can be a much more elaborate meal consisting of cereal, eggs, toast, pancakes, coffee, and/or fruit juice. Lunch is usually served around noon, and an American lunch menu almost always includes sandwiches, soups, french fries and more. Full desserts (sometimes called "pudding" elsewhere) are typically only served after dinner, and become more elaborate for special occasions.

Eating out

The British have “imported” food from very different cultures, e.g. the Indian, the Chinese and the Italian.

One reason for the popularity of these types of restaurant is that they are often much cheaper than the more traditional British ones which serve a mixture of British and French cooking.

In the larger cities there is a great choice of restaurants. A good example of this are the vegetarian restaurants which offer a different type of food.

16

Page 17: Food

Take-away food Restaurants often have a take-away service in which you buy the food cooked and take it to eat elsewhere. The most common are Indian, Chinese and Italian pizza take-away and there are also the American fast-food restaurants. The original British take-away food is fried fish and chips (fried potatoes) and there are still hundreds of fish and chip shops. Self-service Another cheap way to eat out is to go to a self-service cafe where you serve yourself from a counter and pay for your food before eating it. Many self-service restaurants now offer a good range of salads and hot meals. Restaurants Restaurants are usually more expensive than fast-food restaurants or self-service cafes. Most restaurants show a menu outside the building so you can see the type of food served and the prices. Drinks such as wine and beer usually cost more in a restaurant than in a shop or pub.

Fast food or Traditional food?

It’s okay to eat fast food occasionally but fast food is high in calories. So, if you often eat a hamburger and chips you can easily become obese. You must eat homemade food because it is healthier. Everybody knows that fast food is cheap and quick. However fast food is not as tasty as homemade food. Young people prefer to eat pizzas, hamburgers and French fries but they should eat soup instead. Fast food companies spend lots of money to make people believe that fast food is cool. The average American eats three hamburgers with French fries a week. Is it surprising that 14% of American teenagers are obese? Health care is devoted to create new eating habits so that we can have a healthier generation. Obesity can lead to other diseases such as diabetes and heart strokes. This is why America is now starting to fight back against the fast food companies. They are stopping serving fast food in school cafeterias and restaurants serving traditional food are opening now.

Food Fright

Doctors in Britain are worried because British teenagers eat lots of crisps, sweets and fatty food. Most teenagers don’t eat enough fruits or vegetables and more than one million British school children are overweight. Some teenagers say that they don’t have time to eat good food, but kids who have a poor diet often have health problems when they are older.

Americans have been familiar with fast food for a long time< it was born there. American fast food is now a part of life far beyond the shores of the United States. McDonald’s, Pizza Hut, Burger King have restaurants all over the world.

No one can deny that the idea of fast food at a fair price has its place around the world. These establishments are popular simply because they are fulfilling a need within a particular country’s economy.

Page 21: Food

A steady diet of burgers, fries and soda may seem delectable, but it won’t nourish your body with the vitamins and minerals you need to stay healthy. Fast food lacks many important nutrients.

Some parents are criticizing the proliferation of fast food restaurants where people eat high-calorie foods of low nutritional value.

Now doctors are giving young people books and games about a good diet. Having a healthy, well-balanced diet can help you feel better and live longer.
