50 PICTURE THIS
T he Abruzzo region of central Italy is known as "the greenest region in Europe". But, let us show you how it
looks in red. The European Space Agency’s Sentinel 2A satellite has captured the agricultural structures in
Abruzzo. The satellite’s sensitive multispectral camera was able to grab the differences in vegetation cover
and chlorophyll content. This is visible through the varying shades of red and other colors across the entire image.
The brighter reds in the picture indicate more photosynthetically active vegetation. The lower left portion of the
image shows this as it documents the fields along the Roveto Valley Abruzzi mountain range. In the centre of the
image, a cloud and its shadow are visible over the plain. The central left side features an industrial area, while the
town of Avezzano is further north. The entire area in the centre is where the Fucino Lake used to be. Moreover, a
canal is visible running horizontally across the centre of the image.
