FSSC 22000: Certification for Food Packaging Material manufacturing The safety of food packaging materials is integral to the delivery of safe food! The food industry is dependent on safe
and innovative packaging and packaging materials to ensure the transportation, storage, supply and delivery of food
and food ingredients. Food packaging manufacturers are an important constituent of the global food supply chain, and
as such are subject to the increasing demands of customers, consumers and legislation.
Developed to meet the needs of the global supply chain, FSSC 22000 delivers a GFSI benchmarked certification scheme
which incorporates the requirements of the ISO standards and pre requisite programs (ISO 22000, ISO 22003, ISO/TS
22002-1 and PAS 223) for the certification of food safety management systems in the manufacture and provision of food
packaging.
The Role of the Global Food Safety Initiative (GFSI)ISO 22000 provides the specification for an international
management system for food safety across the supply chain,
PAS 223 was developed to specifically address food safety
issues in the manufacture and design of packaging materials
by a Steering Group, consisting of leading global packaging
and food manufacturing companies.
FSSC 22000 provides the specifications required to meet the
standards set by GFSI Guidance Document version 6.
The PAS 223 – ISO 22000 combination alone DOES NOT meet
the GFSI requirements1. However when used in conjunction
with FSSC 22000, the combination achieves the requirements
of the GFSI benchmarked standards. Packaging manufacturers
that already hold an ISO 22000 and PAS 223 certificate can
upgrade to a full FSSC 22000 certificate. The only step that
needs to be taken is for the FSSC 22000 licensed certification
body to validate whether the previous ISO 22000 and PAS 223
certification meets the FSSC 22000 requirements.

1 The GFSI Guidance Document and the ISO 22000 standard are written and constructed differently. The Guidance Document is not a standard by itself, but sets out the mini-mum requirements for the delivery of conforming schemes and full compliance by the scheme is required to achieve GFSI benchmarking.
