References: Education (Early Childhood Services) Regulations 2008 Licensing Criteria for Early Childhood Education and Care Centres 2008 Ministry of Health Protection manual for early childhood education and care centres, 2011. Policy 1. Each kindergarten will develop a procedure that ensures that food is provided in such variety, quantity and quality as to meet the nutritional needs of each child. 2. Drinking water will be available at all times for children. 3. Children shall sit while eating and will be supervised at all times. 4. Infant milk formula given to the child under the age of 12 months must be of a type approved by the child’s parent. Infants under six months or children unable to drink independently must be held semi upright while being fed. 5. Food is prepared and shared in a hygienic environment. 6. Appropriate health and hygiene practices are adhered to in the cleaning of all food and drink utensils. 7. A separate area will be available for the consumption of food and drink. 8. There will be no food or liquids in the sleeping/resting area while children are resting or sleeping. 9. If parents/whānau are asked to provide food for their child, they are encouraged to provide healthy food at all times. Teachers will reach a shared understanding with parents/whānau, taking into consideration the socio-cultural background of each family. Children will not be denied food supplied to them by their parents.

10. Self-help skills in eating and drinking are encouraged. 11. Children are encouraged to follow health and safety routines before, during and after the

consumption of food and drink. 12. The programme will incorporate positive attitudes towards healthy food. 13. Teachers will keep a log of food provided by the kindergarten e.g. any baking experiences

offered. 14. Teachers will provide for the requirements of children with special dietary / health needs.

Procedures: Teachers will develop written procedures specific for their kindergarten around the provision of food and drink.
