    BUILDING A LEGACY OF SUCCESS

  • Message from the PresidentContact Rachel

    Colleagues and Friends of FLC,

I am proud to present the Folsom Lake College 2014-2015 annual report to the campus and the community. This is the first annual report during my presidency, and begins a new tradition of highlighting the accomplishments of our faculty and staff, and the achievements of our students. It offers an abridged reflection of the colleges progress during the past year, and serves to acknowledge the tremendous growth of this young, but rapidly maturing, college.

Last fall, the college celebrated its tenth anniversary as an accredited institution with an Open House for the community. Over 2,000 college staff and community members toured the main campus and shared nostalgic stories of the colleges earliest days, filled with portable buildings and more than a few rattlesnakes. The year continued with a plethora of firsts youll note throughout this report, evidence of Falcontude, an innovative spirit, and a commitment to student learning.

The coming year will leverage these distinctive characteristics and further FLCs vision to inspire excellence and provide educational opportunities to enrich and empower students. Following years of budget reductions and enrollment cutbacks, fiscal pressures have now lessened. Although funding levels have not yet returned to their prerecession levels, new legislation coupled with concomitant funding has provided for multiple new programs dedicated to improving outcomes for underprepared students.

As we begin the 2015-2016 year, I am so proud of FLCs commitment to students. Educating students, preparing them for futures yet defined, opening pathways to opportunities, and challenging minds - this is our calling. This is FLC.

As Malcom X once said, Education is the passport to the future, for tomorrow belongs to those who prepare for it today.

    Dr. Rachel RosenthalPresident

    A Message from the President

  • English Professor Yvonne Price traveled to London as FLCs first participant in the Globe Education Academy. She was part of a cohort of eleven other middle school, high school, and community college teachers in the United Kingdom to learn techniques for bringing Shakespeare alive in the classroom.

Michaela Kwoka-Coleman, editor for the colleges online news publication The Talon, sat on the live debate panel. At the Debate Watching 101 seminar, Student Senate president Jonathan Rogers presented a strong student perspective alongside other distinguished panel members.

Folsom Lake College faculty, staff, students, and supporters kicked off the academic year and gathered for a special 10th Anniversary commemorative group photo on the Quad at the main Folsom campus.

  • 2014-2015 was a groundbreaking year for the Folsom Lake College Foundation.

The Presidents Circle: Our new giving society contributes unrestricted funds to continue the legacy of excellence and enable the Folsom Lake College Foundation to respond to the students and colleges greatest needs, including student scholarships, textbook scholarships, and vital student support services. Its inaugural year met with phenomenal success with 20 new donors, and over $27,000 in donations!

Scholarships: The Foundation awarded 24 scholarships for the upcoming academic year, with 19 deserving recipients awarded a total of $24,300! One 2015-2016 recipient wrote: The scholarship helped lighten my financial burden - which as a single, working parent and full-time college student can be overwhelming at times - and allowed me to focus on my educational goals of becoming a teacher. I plan on becoming a positive, supportive teacher, and without the financial assistance from this generous scholarship, I might not have been able to continue my studies. Thank you Folsom Lake College Foundation and Los Rios Community Colleges for this incredible opportunity. I will not let you down!

The Faculty and Staff Campaign for the Annual Fund: Launched this past spring, the new drive to increase faculty and staff donations to the Annual Fund resulted in new donors and increased payroll deductions. These gifts are used to directly support Faculty and Staff Mini-Grants. Last spring the Foundation awarded ten mini-grants totaling nearly $6,500 for initiatives developed throughout the campus community.

Remember when you give, we give back!
