Hi! I'mEddie Ellis. Tank-you or electingme two terms. In 2004, I promised to vote no

to a property tax increase, andan increase in zoning density. In 2008, again I pledged thosepromises, and "to work to keepFolly a laid back residentialcommunity". I kept my promises!

I re-elected, I promise the same. Tereore, I'masking or your vote on April 3. Please vote or me!

Serving entails more than simply voting no.I have provided scal responsibility and looked outor the taxpayer. In 2007, I reduced the propertytax increase by $114,000. I improved the sewernances by eliminating the $60,000 yearly PILO,which was draining our sewer reserves. Movingorward, I want to work to establish a utilitiescapital improvement plan, and an inrastructurereserve. I know the city nances, and Im condentI can serve to provide scal integrity, and workagainst property tax increases.

Legislation I introduced and passedPROHIBIS any urther CONDODEVELOPMEN, and reduces developmentdensity. Other legislation prohibits any urtherincrease in beachront commercialism, andlimits transient vendors in our business district. IREFUSE to let Folly be a CASH COW!

Eectiveness takes working with others.I opposed County Consolidated Dispatch, andworked to overturn it. It took perseverance andcooperation rom others to return our dispatchers.Im experienced, eective, and as a graduate o

MASC Elected Ocials Institute, Im educated. Most important, I can work with mayor, council, and sta. Tats what it takes - and your vote - soplease do! Contact : 588-9595 or [email protected].

I am Sandy Hickman, and I am asking you

or your support on April 3rd in my bid or citycouncil. I was born and raised on East Erie, where I currently reside with my husband, Ken.Both my parents, Marcia and Angus Smith, wereinvolved in the Folly community. My ather was aVolunteer Fireman and Civic Club member. My

mother is known by many as theBread Lady or the SandbarRestaurant. My daughter, VeronicaBolus, was also born and raisedhere on Folly and is active in thesurng community. I am a BoardMember o the Folly Exchange

Club where my, brother, Angus, is also currentlythe President. I am in the process o retiring so Ican devote more time to Folly.

I have seen many changes take place here onFolly Beach. Te present Council and Mayor aretaking Folly in the right direction. Folly Beach hasalways been a laid back town and I believe it shouldremain that way or years to come. In order or thisto occur, we all must be respectul and considerateo each other in our community as well as visitors.Te stress o the day melts away as I approach Folly.Teres no place like HOME! I am available tospeak to any and all o my ellow Folly Beachers.I can be reached at 437-0340 or [email protected].

    Letter to the Editor

    Honoring a 'Follyite'

    Dear Editors,

Te good-ole-boy government systemcontinues to have a decent oot hold onFolly Beach. No one is more aware othis than ormer mayor Bob Linville.

For years now, Mr. Linville has

enjoyed disregarding the public right-o-way midblock easement at his 510East Ashley Ave. property. Tis is a stripo land in the public trust, allowing orpedestrian access through the middleo a city block. In our case it is so thatbeach-goers can park on back streets andwalk, without obstructing the road tothe beach.

At mid 5th block East there is a very

nice dune walkover that directs you romthe beach to the midblock right-o-waybetween East Arctic and East Ashley. However, at this point a pedestrian isstranded along the busy trac o EastAshley due to a ence built across theright-o-way at 510 East Ashley.

Te Planning Commission recentlyrecommended to City Council thatthis and other right-o-ways be clearedor access. Tis Resolution 16-12died on the council chamber oorbecause neither council member normayor would second the motion. Tecomments by Mr. Linville rom thegallery reeked o sel-interest: Why areyou picking on these easements?

Well, Mr. Linville, in your case itsbecause you continue to break the law.Your stance clearly reveals your attitudethat the rules dont apply to you andapparently Mayor Goodwin eels thesame way since no code enorcement hasbeen issued or this case.

What was that comment MayorGoodwin made about everyone playingby the same rules? Its time or ourmayor to use the words o RonaldReagan and say Mr. Linville, tear thatwall down!

    Sincerely,

    Jim Crow

    520 East Huron Ave.

o Whom It May Concern:In an old lm, Te World of SuzieWong, a Chinese mother uses that veryaddress to send a letter o reerenceto God to accompany the soul o herinant son who died: o Whom It MayConcern.

Nancy Wilson died in her Sandbarapartment on Folly Beach last week.As a true Follyite, Nancy workedevenings at MUSC or years and spenttime at the Crab Shack. She was otensurly. She was an artist. She was ondo wine and in love with a guy namedRoy. And she was my dear riend ordecades.

During dicult times and acrossdistances wed oten console ourselves

that someday, as Rose would say, whenthe works all done, wed be twoold broads sitting in rockers and justwatching the ocean back on the 10thblock east (where our house was beoreHugo) and grumbling. Nancy wasjust 63. Nancys cousin and sister willbe on Folly this Friday to collect herbelongings. Later this spring, I hopeto be back home to release her ashesto the sea on the pier. I hope to hear

rom anyone whod like to par ticipatein that.

You should have seen her back in herBennington days. She was gorgeous--all legs and Farrah hair and otensurly. Ill bring a picture.

    2012

SECOND PLACE"Sunrise on the Pier," by Bill Noel

Simultaneously dramatic and peaceful and a beautiful image all aroundof Folly Beach, says Hunter, pointing out that the photographer took a clichimage and creatively gave it life. Justin was impressed with the timing capturingthe angle of the sun, and the ability to capture the right exposure.

    THIRD PLACE"Magical Kayaking," ByJan Bufngton

The judges were immediately moved by the proximity of thephotographer to the dolphin, giving them a feeling that theywere in the water with the animal. Its hard to capture that splitsecond when they emerge, and to get it while the sun is settingis impressive, says Lindsey.

HONORABLE MENTION"Tide Pool," by Raphael Koenig

You can tell the photographer was trying to be creative with viewpoints, layering the image, says Hunter. Koenig, a German exchange student whovacationed on Folly Beach with his host family, took the image before sunset onthe beach.

BEST SHOT BY A FOLLY BEACH RESIDENT

    FIRST PLACE

"St. Hildas Abbey, Whitby, England," by John Appleby

The judges felt that overall, this photograph told a story, between the sky,the castle, and the pond. You can see the wind. Theres a lot of depth,

says Lindsey. Theres color popping off of everything, says Justin. Hunterappreciated how the viewers eyes are led in a ow around the photograph.

    SECOND PLACE

"Dog and Kayaks," By Jim Crow

This gave me an emotion. Its a simple, nice idea, says Hunter.Justin liked the simplicity of the two kayaks, and liked that the boatswere solid colors without writing that would have taken away from thecomposition. It made Lindsey yearn for summertime.

THIRD PLACE"Sailors Delight," By Diana Joan Vincent

This is a tough picture to get, says Lindsey. The boat is exposednicely and the background isnt blown out.

HONORABLEMENTION"Prayers in the Wind,Japan," by DianaJoan Vincent

The judges foundthis photo striking andintriguing, partially dueto the mystery of whatthey were seeing.

Pulling up to an oyster bank, I polledmy guests.

    Who likes mud? I asked.

Hands rom Amy and Mona (9 and7 respectively) shot into the air. Oyster-covered plu mud banks cushioned theboats landing.

Weve got millions o oyster here inthe salt marsh, maybe billions, I told theolks on the boat.

Snails and oysters are mollusks,Amy stated.

    Wow, I thought. Smart kid.

Octopi are mollusks, too, she added.

Amy had me o balance. Uhyes, octopus are mollusks, class cephalopoda, phylum mollusca, I dredged up rom mycobwebbed memory.

    Dont you mean octopi?

YesOctopi, I repeated. Just aswith my students, I smiled and noddedapproval. A sheepish smile on the Dadsace turned wide. Next, we painted plumud onto our cheeks. Plu mud, madeup o clays, silts, and organics, settlesand deposits in the low-energy salt marshenvironment.

So...what lives in the water and whatdo they do? I asked.

Yes, kidsyou just put crab poop onyour aces.

A little later in the tr ip, Amy, nowascinated with plu mud, requested hal

a pail rom the exposed bank. I obliged.Soon, in beauty spa style, plu mudcaked both Amys and Monas cheeks.Plu mud also ound its way onto pantlegs, onto boat seats, and into hair. Imade available a hand-washing bucket ocreek water. Potential plu mud-printedcar seats and couches had the adultstalking confscation. Te plu mudbucket went ashore with Amy and Monaduring their Morris Island exploration.Ten it returned and rode back to themarina, nestled tightly at Monas eet.

At the end o our trip, I held myawards ceremony, bestowing the k idswith the coveted PLUFFMUDDERtitle and bumper sticker. Amy andMona, with partially dried, mud-cakedcheeks, graciously accepted their newPLUFFMUDDER statuses. Teir Mom,who never actually touched the stu, received the lesser award: Mother o aPlumudder. She still got a sticker.

Glancing up rom my boat cleaning, Isaw my departing guests walking up thegangway. Te plu mud bucket let withthem, still swinging on Amys arm.

What a winter! Or rather, whatwinter? Day ater day o unseasonablywarm weather has been an anglersdream. Our shery has remained activethroughout the last ew months andis building towards what should be anawesome spring.

    Redsh remain in massive schools

numbering in the hundreds as they tryto avoid dolphins and stay warm. Youllnd these schools on mud ats as wellas shallow bank s that provide cover. On sunny days, redsh are especiallydrawn to the ats as t he mud retains anextra ew degrees o warmth. Youll ndthe best shing tends to be around lowtide when these reds are balled up tighttogether.

Articial jerk shad lures are a verypopular option when casting to theseschools. Bigger 4-5 lures in darkertones that imitate the natural bait inthe water have been quite efective.Weve been particula rly lucky with greylures that have some sparkle or pearlwhite. I always pair these lures with autter hook, usually size 3/0. Te utterhook when combined with a loop knotprovides great action and really enticesthose redsh.

For trout acionados, this winter hasbeen a welcome change to the past twowinters that had very cold temperaturesthat pushed the trout bite back weeks inot months. Weve been catching troutin modest numbers and oten whiletargeting reds. It really eels li ke troutwill be ourishing in March a s opposedto May this year.

As trout become more active, popping corks cast along grass banks

and over oyster beds will be a good betpaired with mud minnows. I usually usea 18-24 leader and a size 1 circle hook. When working the popping cork, alwaystry to keep slack out o your line andwhen that cork drops just reel tight toset the hook. Youll nd that the circlehook will do most o the work or you.

Tis a great time o year or yshing. Sight shing abounds andstalking a school o a hundred plus shis so exciting you almost all of thebow with anticipation. Smaller ies indarker colors are working best and ablack clouser minnow is a ne example.Remember when the sh hits, resist thetemptation to lit your rod tip and strip

    strike instead.

No, Im not quite that old, butWoodstock did save me. Woodstock mydog that is, not my hippy experience.Okay, it was both, but lets start withcanine and d iscuss the hippy experienceanother day. (Te hippy stu willrequire a book, not a mere ar ticle.)

Between the times o earlyconsciousness until about ten years old,I had a giant German Shepherd namedWoodstock. Maybe he seems giant inmemory now because Im rememberingthrough the eyes o an adolescent, but

Woodstock was a strong, smart a ndprotective dog.

Like most dogs, he was deathlyscared o thunder, but oddly enoughhe also had a morbid ear o water, dueno doubt to my grandmother and herinamous garden hose. My grandmaused her water cannon on children andpets alike, laughing the whole time likeCruella de Vil. Woodstock oten ellinto her line o fre, probably becausehe didnt bother to try to outrun uskids, each o us scurry ing north, south, east and west when grandma camerunning with the water cannon. PoorWoodstock was oten let standing like a

    deer caught in headlights.

During a thunderstorm, Woodstockcould only be ound under t he shed, maybe under my bed i I managed tosneak him inside. I managed to sneakhim in during most storms. Maybesneak is a little misleading; mygrandparents were okay with him inside,as long as I got him in beore he got wet.Tey loved Woodstock too, but didntwant a wet dog in the house. He and Iwere the best o buds, hunkering undermy bed while the storms passed.

It was a sweltering evening in the

summer o 1970-something, and I wa seight or nine years o age. Woodstockand I were on the beach o Follyaround the East 4th Street access. Wehad jogged rom the East 5th Streetaccess and it was very hot, so I raninto the ocean to cool o. Woodstockdidnt ollow any urther than to theedge o the sur, but he hovered thereas I splashed in the waves. I triedto encourage him to join me in therereshing waters o the Atlantic, buthe was more interested in simply layinghis belly on the cool sand and watchingme rolic. Suddenly, a big wave sentme head-over-heels and then pulledme some distance out to sea. It was anout-going tide, but not quite a rip-tide.

When I gathered my bearingsand started treading water it was abrie respite. Another massive wavehit me and I was again in a tumble.Fortunately, this wave pushed metoward the shore and I swam as hard asI could, catching the churning backsideo the wave, but still fghting the

current. Soon I had my ooting and wasstaggering inland, into a big sandbarpool created by the out-going tide.Tats when Woodstock attacked.

He came plowing through thepool like a bull and l atched onto myswimming trunks. He began to dragme away rom the ocean, and despite

my protests, he wasnt taking no oran answer. I was fghting to keepmy trunks on, but by t he time wewere on dry sand I had managed toregain some control o the situation.Woodstock maneuvered bet ween meand the Atlantic as I d ropped to thesand. I pulled my trunks back up andcleared my head o saltwater. He wasstanding defantly between me and theocean and had a very intent look on hisace. I knew I was not allowed backin the water. And that was okay withme. I had ocean water, sand and shellsup my nose, in my ears, and in place sunmentionable. We watched the skybecome deep purple and trotted back

    home.

Te second time Woodstock saved mewas almost thirty years later.

Tis Woodstock was a rescue I oundon Wadmalaw Island. I was 38 yearsold then and looking to get a dog. Iwanted a Boykin Spaniel, but decided togo with a rescue. A good riend told meo a sweet hound that his neighbor hadbeen eeding and said that I should givethe dog a look. So I went or a countrydrive to look.

    My riends neighbor had been

eeding her or a week or so, leaving adish o ood out or her at night. Shewas very nervous and he had dubbedher Skinny Minny. Skittish Minnywould have been a better description, because she would have nothing to dowith humans. Some nincompoop hadabused her, not just through neglect

but by keeping too tight a chain or ropearound her neck. Tere was a scabbyline around her slender neck, devoid ohair. She was a survivor, though, havingslipped her noose. She was ree butalone. I quickly discerned that she wasnot just hungry or ood, but or kindness

and love. I was ready to give her both, knowing I would get a return o both inabundance. Besides, she had the sweetestbrown eyes and big, oppy, hound ears.I was already doing dog talk with thissweet yet tough puppy, having yet to eventouch her.

I had visited the Piggly Wiggly on theway to Wadmalaw and had some porkchops in my truck. Ater making riendswith the pup with a ew bite-sized pieceso pork, tossing them to a sae distancebetween us, I placed a whole pork-chopon the ground a ew eet away, securingit to the ground with a tent stake. Ten Isimply reclined on the ground and wa ited,

ignoring her. She vigilantly snied andcrept around, very suspicious. Her hungergot the best o her. As she gingerly tuggedat the pork-chop, I rolled over and nabbedher. She weighed all o 20 pounds and Ijust pulled her into my chest. It was easy, especially since she immediately wentinto a submissive position. She was just apup, an abused one at that. And she washungry. I handled her with kid-gloves.

I had come to Wadmalaw Islandexpecting to maybe take a dog backwith me, so I had blankets piled in thepassenger seat o the truck. I wrapped herin the blankets and she was as quiet as amouse--shivering like one too. I tossedthe pork-chop she hadnt eaten back intothe cooler and drove home. Hal an hourlater she was in my living room atop the

same blankets and chewing on the pork-chop with gusto, sneaking grateul, yetguarded glances at me.

I decided to name her Woodstock orthree reasons:

    1. She looked like my earlierWoodstock: the same color coat (blondwith streaks o black) with our white eetand two big soupy eyes.

    2. She reminded me o the bird inCharles Schulzs Peanuts. You know,Snoopys best riend, always there tolisten, non-judgmental, and ready orany adventure. Is Woodstock a male or

emale? Does it matter?3. Woodstock is just a cool name.

Ive been riends with this Woodstockor about seven years now, and she hassaved my lie by enriching it. She hastaught me responsibility, much as anine-year-old child might. Tats aboutas ar as dogs get: a silly, inquisitive littleknuckle-head adolescent. In dog years

she is in her orties, but in reality sheis less than nine. I oten awake to fndher soupy eyes and wet nose inches rommy ace. I gotta pee, she is announcing.Well, I gotta also, so I get up.

She is still a little sk ittish, but nowherenear what she was. I take her to all thebars on Folly that will allow her, and evento some that dont. She takes it all instride, nervous at frst, but warming-uppretty darn quick. Normally I tether herleash to my chair, but i the bar is rowdyI remove the leash and let her ramble. She seems to do better the drunker thepeople are, ironic as that seems. I guessshe fgures a drunk wont be able to catchher. She never loses track o where I amthough, returning oten to confrm mypresence.

I took her to the Sur Ba r one nightand had her tethered to my chair. Terewas an untethered young Rottweilerunder a nearby table that kept snappingand growling at her. I wanted to get the

owners attention, but couldnt fgureout just who the heck the owner was.Woodstock slunk under my chair asusual, but ater a ew minutes she didsomething very unusual. She came outand stood tall. She bolted to the limitso her leash and unleashed a 400 -poundbarking right in the Rottweilers ace.Im not sure what she said, but it wassaid with passion. I was proud.

Te outside deck o the Sur Barmomentarily went silent ater her readingo the riot act. Te other dog retreatedwith a whimper. Woodstock promptlytook a seat at my eet and turned hersoupy eyes up or my approval. She gotquite a ew pats on her knuckle-headthat night. Tose darned nine-year-olds,sometimes they cant share the samesandbox; sometimes the bullies get their

    comeuppance.

Between the two Woodstocks, Ivealways had a pet when I could, and theyare all silly nine-year-olds. Well, maybenot cats. Cats are silly too, but they arear too independent to be too silly. Catsallow us to share their world. Sometimesthey want to share our world; sometimesthey want us to share theirs. Sometimesbeing the operative word. Dogs, however, are all-the-time wanting to share.

I you dont have a silly nine-year old,you should. Tey will take you o center, keep you somewhat responsible and will

always entertain you. Adopt a pet andenrich your lie.

Tey are always glad to see you comehome, always glad to be invited onto thecouch or into your lap, and certainlyalways glad to go or a W-A-L-K on theshores o Folly.
