PUPILS TAKE THE CLASSROOM OUTDOORS

Our students took the classroom outdoors just before lockdown when they

planted trees donated from the Woodland Trust. The school successfully

applied for a pack of hawthorn, rowan, blackthorn, silver birch, hazel and

common oak trees from the Trust after hearing about the scheme online.

‘This scheme has been a great opportunity for students to play their part in

habitat restoration and carbon offsetting. It also gives them a chance to

deepen their interest in nature and ecology at the same time as getting their

hands muddy. The teamwork shown by the students made us very proud.’

Mr Carthew

M

The planting scheme has created two outdoor

classroom spaces so on future sunny days learning can take place

in the shade of native trees. The outdoor classrooms are connected by a

winding path and the whole scheme is surrounded by a cross country route.

Last summer we also collected a huge amount of wildflower seeds which will

be sown to form a meadow area between the sports fields and the new

woodland. Over the next few years we hope to see it fill with wildlife and

we’re sure it will be enjoyed by Hayle students for generations to come.”

Life Skills As a part of Owen’s life skills lessons he has been learning about Orienteering and

Bird watching. He started to put his life skills into practice earlier this year.

He started the day by reading and orientating his map to navigate from Hayle

Academy down to the plantation, where he learnt a bit of history about Henry

Harvey’s work on the plantation and reconstructing the paths and tracks. We

continued along Hayle Estuary ending at the RSPB Bird hide. During our time at

the bird hide Owen spotted many species including Canada Geese, Curlews,

Shelduck and was lucky enough to see a

Grey Heron fishing. Mrs Thomas-Mclean

POETRY, PROSE AND PLAYS

Back in February I had the privilege to take nine students to LGBT gathering at Penair school.

The students joined in workshops and completed musical performances and poetry, which they

shared with other schools. All students participated by reading poetry, singing , playing

instruments and sharing their thoughts.

The day was very moving and it gave students the ability to voice how they feel and the

confidence to share with others . Here are two pieces of poetry which where written by our

students.

Pride

Do you know what its like, every morning to wake up and look in the mirror?

To look and see and wish the image would clear,

If so make your perception clearer

So you wouldn’t have to hear that monster, Looking at “cha”,

Telling you your shoulders belong to a man, or

That some fake tan would make you look pretti-er.

Do you know what its like

To walk around in the afternoon aimlessly.

Wondering what you’d be if you could grow up and be,

What they say you could be

Coz they said you could be whatever you want-ed to be,

But now things spiral endlessly, With you wondering about your legacy,

Will you be that one kid who they never got to see, not truly at least.

Have you ever even thought about what its like, to cry rivers in the evening

Curled up in a little ball of un believing

Bawling at the smallest suggestion of placing and being placed,

Into prom dress and ballet, or into football and suits

Or growing up and getting married into life of heterosexuality

And oppression and being a diligent caring mother or a hardworking father

Your life was planned out, and you know it.

Because of thread of a little ribbon is placed on each of us when we are born.,

Blue, or pink. Labelling us for the monochrome

life they want us to live.

But why should we stand for ribbons of grey,

when we have seas of flags,

Flags which are purple, yellow, pink and red,

flags that are rainbows,

The kind of rainbows which light up our lives

more than even those in the skies.

Why sit with grey, when you can stand with

pride.

Unfairness

Our love is strong, an infinite bond

Where no one can tear us apart.

But we aren’t treated equal

We’re like freaks on the wall,

So here my sequel will start.

We aren’t allowed to love, we can’t even play

Yet they want us all to act the same way.

We don’t even exist, even though we are mixed

Our gender's don't separate us, we own it like papers.

Its all over the place , they’re up in our face

Just wanting to get a response

So we retaliate, the strikes in place

Yet they are still asking why?

Our hearts don’t stop, we won’t even drop

To our feet or our knees

For we are used to it

But we will make it in the end.

I swear for all we want is to treated as an equal

This is fair

‘The Great Hayle Bake Off’ Charity Fundraiser

Hayle Academy decided to support one charity this year with a series of non-

uniform days and potential other fundraisers. Red tie students nominated and

shortlisted charities and then students voted for the one charity we will support.

The chosen charity this year is Macmillan Cancer Support.

We have had two non-school uniform days before lockdown and in total they have

raised a massive £780.65.

In addition we held a cake sale to raise funds for our Duke of Edinburgh Students

to enable us to invest in new kit. A total £141.90 was raised.

Fantastic effort!

Our DT Teacher has been busy during

Lockdown

volunteering with Cornwall Scrubs.

Cornwall Scrubs was launched in April 2020 in response to the COVID-19 crisis.

‘For the love of scrubs’ was formed by Ashleigh Linsdell. Ashleigh was an emergency nurse, who identified a short-age in supply for scrubs to frontline NHS staff.

Cornwall Scrubs, led by Annie Lucas along with a team of volunteers, now has sewing volunteers across Cornwall who are all working towards ensuring that the NHS staff and healthcare workers have access to scrubs if PPE has not been provided.

Mrs Treloar joined the team as a volun-teer and has been doing the amazing work of making scrubs that will be used in the local hospitals and hospices to help with PPE.

What a fantastic thing to do. Thank you

Mrs Treloar and all the volunteers!!

Just before the nation was gripped by

the current pandemic and ‘lock down’

started, Hayle students treated local

audiences to three performances of the

Queen musical ‘WE Will Rock You’.

The show opened on Wednesday 11th

March and finished with a

sell-out-performance on Friday 13th

March.

“It was a great show to be a part of and the

students clearly enjoyed performing it.

There was a real feeling of solidarity

amongst the cast and everyone was quite

sad when it ended” Mr G Graham (Director)

This high energy, comedy musical proved

to be very popular with the cast. Ethan

Faithful and Rose Golay, who played the

lead characters ‘Galileo and Scaramouch’

had audiences laughing and singing

along to iconic hits from start to finish.

‘I am so proud of everyone involved, this was the

best show, with the best cast, that I’ve ever worked

on. We faced many challenges but overcame

them together as a team. For some of our year 11

students WWRY was the end of their last full

week in school and what a week it was!

We made fantastic memories and had the most

fun. I am very proud to be Hayle.’

Young People's Art Prize.

Well done Roxie, Nafisa, Amelia and Elizabeth in year 10 who all created art pieces for a competi-tion at The Exchange in Penzance.

Judging of all the entries took place and any shortlisted

students would have

had their artwork up for a few weeks for visitors to see. Sadly the gallery won’t be open for visitors but we are still very proud of those who were shortlisted and also entered.

The shortlisted stu-dents were Nafisa, Elizabeth and Amelia – well done!

Year 11 Art

Kyan in year 11 enjoys focusing

on creating artwork using spray

paints which is a real passion of

his at the moment. Since his

work was featured on the cover

of the Hayle Academy

newsletter last year he has de-

veloped his style.

Kyan is currently documenting

the journey of his spray paint

work in his A3 coursework folder

and sharing his changes as an

artist. We are impressed and

proud of his hard work and en-

thusiasm in the department and

at home.

THANK YOU

NHS!!! Hayle Academy students have been taking part in this wonderful art challenge.

Cornwall College has been calling upon children aged between 4-18 to create a

portrait of a really valued member of the NHS to say a massive THANK YOU!! The

portraits will be hung in a very special collection at the Royal Cornwall Hospital!

Culture Camp – Awards Ceremony

Both students recently received their Bronze Arts awards at the awards ceremony held in the even-ing at Porthmeor Studios. We wanted to congratulate Kayleigh and Kati on their hard work during their holiday and also for meeting all of the awards criteria. Kati shared her feelings about the project: 'I had a really good experience working with the St Ives School of

painting’ the Tate and Leech Pottery at half term. My favourite time was working in Leech Pottery modelling and firing work. It was al-so interesting seeing all of the old chambers that they use to fire work in. I’m exciting to get my Bronze Arts award’.

Kati and Kayleigh in year 11 spent 5 days involved in the art project Culture Camp.

Culture Camp was organ-

ised by The St Ives School of Painting who have made links with Leech Pottery and the Tate for workshops that took place over the week. Kati and Kayleigh were able to explore painting, ceramics, recording ideas on the beach and also work in Porthmeor studios. 'I had a really good

experience working with the

NYT is a world leading youth arts charity. They have been centre stage for over 60 years, inspiring young people and audiences alike in the

importance of live theatre.

The NYT offers free and affordable opportunities both onstage and back-stage to young people aged 14-25 across the UK providing life-changing Experiences. Students have the opportunity to work with some of the UK’s leading profession-al directors, writers, producers, designers and stage managers. Back in January I took a small group of Year 9, 10 and 11 students to a workshop run by the National Youth Theatre at Pool Academy. Following the workshop they were invited to audition for the NYT. Zoe (along with several other students) accepted the challenge and prepared a monologue which she performed at the audition. Jump forward to May where Zoe received an email to say she has been accepted!

This is a massive opportunity for Zoe as very few students are accepted nation-wide and we are all very proud of her. I hope this makes you smile as much as it did me . What a fantastic achievement. Mrs Rule

Maths & Science

Maths Challenge

30 Year 9 students sat the

United Kingdom Mathletics

Trust (UKMT) Intermediate

Maths Challenge.

The Intermediate Mathematical

Challenge is a 60-minute, multiple-

choice competition aimed at students

across the UK. It encourages

mathematical reasoning, precision

of thought, and fluency in using

basic mathematical techniques to solve

interesting problems.

The problems on the Intermediate

Mathematical Challenge are designed

to make students think. Most are ac-

cessible, yet still challenge those

with more experience.

The students who did the challenge

worked hard throughout their 60

minutes, tackling the problems well,

working through each question. They

had to be careful, as answering some

questions incorrectly meant losing

marks. This meant that they also had to

use strategy to work out which ques-

tions they should answer.

The students completed the challenge

and the results were sent off. Confirma-

tion has come in that the students hard

work paid off, with all students getting

good marks, with three students gain-

ing certificates. Two bronze certificates

have been awarded to Chloe V and

Gemma A and a silver certificate to

Daisy Y. Daisy also passed the mark to

be eligible for the next challenge,

known as the kangaroo.

As this competition is across all schools

in the country and is sat by students up

to year 11, I think these students did

exceptionally well, Congratulations to

all of those who participated.

UNTIL WE MEET AGAIN…..

We asked members of staff a couple of questions and also what they have been getting up to during Lockdown:

1. What are you enjoying about the lockdown?

2 . What are you most looking forward to about returning to School?

I hope this all makes you smile and how lovely it is to see some familiar faces!

I am really enjoying being in the garden

and have just

realised today that courgettes make beau-

tiful flowers. I have also re-discovered

Shaun The Sheep. I love it so much that I

am styling my hair like Shaun too.

I am Looking forward to returning and

singing with choirs again. I have some

new arrangements to try.

I have been trying to listen to a different

band/musician each week. Use this time to experience some of the great music out there. Stay safe.

Mr Graham

I find it really hard being on my own all

day but I have enjoyed going out for daily

walks with my dog Skamp.

I really miss the interaction with both my

colleagues and students. I’m a people person

so am looking forward to being back, sup-

porting students face to face.

I hope you are all ok and staying safe. I look

forward to the day when we can return to

some form of normality. Take care x

19

I really enjoying having time to do things at home, gardening,

DIY, cooking -I am even

Re-discovering knitting after a period of many years.

Hearing the hustle and bustle of school life - our 'social' circle in

this current period of lock down has been very limited so I am

looking forward to mixing with people again.

We, the staff are looking forward to seeing you all again.

Mrs Watson (Admin)

There are so many things I enjoyed about the lockdown including the wonderful weather and having

a bit more time in the mornings. Probably the best thing has been exploring the area I live much more

and finding out just how beautiful and tranquil it is.

What I’m most looking forward to the return to school is chatting to

students who can’t escape from me as I supervise the lunch queue! It’s been

really strange having so few students in school over the last few weeks. At

first the idea of a school without students seemed quite attractive, the school

was certainly calmer! However, as the weeks have gone on I’ve really missed

the buzz and energy of you young people. I hope you’re all well, that you are

keeping up with your learning and that we will meet again soon.

Mr Mather

It is great not having to rush from place to place every day - I do not miss

having to do two school runs before I get into work and I'm really not miss-

ing playing taxi taking my children to their after school clubs!

It is nice to have my evenings back, especially with the lovely weather we have been having. It is lovely

to see so much of my children and to do things we don't usually get time to do

during term-time - we have even managed a camp in the garden!

It has also been lovely getting to know the area where we live, exploring areas

we've not walked to before.

These three photos give a glimpse of my lockdown - my reaction to Lego tipped

all over the floor (note the headphones so I couldn't

hear the arguing!); out for a walk near home; and

watching the sunset from my garden. (I have

also LOVED seeing all the rainbows everywhere!)

I'm just REALLY looking forward to seeing everyone. I hope everyone is

well and not missing their friends & teachers too much.

What I have enjoyed the most is spending extra time with my

son and daily adventures on our exercise walks. I am most

looking forward to talking to staff and students, whilst

seeing their smiles and all the lockdown haircuts!

Mrs Leech

What am I most enjoying about lockdown is having

time to do some things that I never seem to have time

for, the garden is looking really good now.

I miss school, the routine, the children and staff, Mrs

Clark’s laugh, I miss everything about school, even the

drive. Just getting back to life would be great. I really

miss my grandchildren

You need to make the most of this situation and time,

possibly never again will you have this opportunity to

learn a new skill, be kind t

o each other and see the best in everything.

Mrs Truscott

I am enjoying spending more time with my family and our miniature daschund, Sid. He is certainly

enjoying having us at home as well as our daily walks along the Hayle Estuary, especially watching

the beautiful sunsets over the beach.

I have been in school on a weekly basis but it is just not the same without you all - students and staff.

It is too quiet and strange without all of the hustle, bustle and 'buzz' from our learning environments.

I'm most looking forward to our 'face to face' (although socially distanced) interactions - communi-

cating on the phone, via messages and virtually on screen just aren't the same!

Well done to everyone for their hard work and effort whilst learning at home as well as your support

and care for each other. Your teachers are very pleased with the work that has been submitted, which

shows your resilience and perseverance in these challenging times. We understand that learning from

home is not the same as learning in the classroom. Don't forget that your teachers and tutors are here to

support you - please let us know if we can help by messaging any questions, such as questions about

the work or how to submit work online, via Show My Homework. Keep going and stay safe.

I have been enjoying spending unexpected time with my son and I am most looking forward to Seeing

colleagues and students and back to some sort of “normal” teaching .

Please look after yourselves and enjoy this unexpected time with your families.

Mr Chippett

I am enjoying most - not having to get up so early every morning and only having to get as far as

my kitchen to start work! Not feeling like I am in a rush all the time...

I am looking forward to being able to catch up with all my lovely colleagues in school - everyone is

always so supportive and although this has continued in 'lockdown' it's not the same as seeing every-

one 'face-to-face'...

Mrs Hickson (Student Reception)

Captain Hayle!! Hayle Academy has their very own superhero. Mr Irons decided to make some fun fitness videos on YouTube for staff, student and parents to enjoy to promote the benefits of exercise not only physically but mentally.

“I have made these videos as my niece and nephew wanted something different compared to Joe wicks so

I said I'd do something similar but fun!

Making it was fun and people asked for more.

So.....I made more! They've really helped me both mentally and physically, so it needed sharing!

My plan is to make 2/3 a week for everyone to enjoy!

Mr Irons

I am enjoying spending more time with my 3 year old son then I ever thought

I would (don’t get me wrong, sometimes it is a testing time, but it is absolute-

ly worth it). I am also enjoying exercising every day, I feel healthier and that

must be a good thing.

I am honestly looking forward to seeing you lovely students again; brilliant

tutor group especially.

Make the most of this extra time you have everyone. Get good at something,

try new things, learn some new phrases in a language, and exercise.

Ode to Edenred

This week I’ve sat and scratched my head

I haven’t slept when I’ve gone to bed I’ve tossed and turned and worried sick About a website and the dreaded ‘click’.

For two weeks now I’ve tried so hard

To order up an eGift Card One for each of our hungry bunch

So they could have their FSM lunch.

I’ve sat for hours and lost the plot All I see is the whirring dot

It’s been in the press and on the news I’ve read reports and expressed my views!

Our parents and carers deserve much more:

I tried to go to the local store – but ‘sorry they said, they ‘can’t help’ me

the most I could have was a measly three!

But now at last I’m glad to say the vouchers are finally on their way! I am starting to feel a bit more chilled,

the order bar now shows ‘Fulfilled’!

Thanks to all who have played a part Packing food, delivering boxes, making calls,

and that’s just the start. Our parents and carers, students too for your patience and good spirits –

A big Thank You! Poem by Mrs Halsey
