2. Remember... Cultured Music is written, theorical, it requires years of study to be performed, is led to an specific public... 3. On the contrary... Popular Music: is aimed at all audiences, has a comercial purpose, musicians are often not professionals, is not written... 4. we distinguish two types of popular music.... Depending on the FUNCTION of the music, 5. 1) Traditional/Folkloric Music It has a SOCIAL function, because is performed at the important events in the community. It has a COMMERCIAL function, because it is made to be consumed for a public. 1) Urban music 7. Other differences between Traditional Music and Urban Music are... 8. Traditional Urban The author is unknown, Written and sung by is performed by amateur 'professional musicians' musicians. Is spread mouth by mouth Is spread by the media 9. TRADITIONAL / FOLKLORIC MUSIC 10. Ethimology The word FOLKLORE comes from the english words: Folk: people (pueblo) Lore: knowledge (conocimiento) *This word appears in the XIXth century, when the interest for the popular traditions appears. 11. Ethnomusicology Musicology: Science that studies the music Ethnomusicology: Part of the musicology dedicated to the traditional music 12. Thus, every country has its own folklore, but we are going to study the Spanish Folklore. 13. Traditional music in Spain is huge. We have lots of musical forms... extended through the whole country, ROMANCE JOTA and others typical from each community. Mueira (Galicia) Sardana (Catalua) Danza Prima (Asturias) Seguidillas Sevillanas Etc... 14. ROMANCE Lyric: Narrative song telling historic episodes, love stories or social events. Romance del Conde Olinos Music: Strophic song, that repeats an only Theme (melody). 15. JOTA Although the most famous jotas are from Aragn y Navarra, we can find many kinds of jotas in all the regions. 'Jota' comes from 'Xotar' (saltar) The Jota is a song to dance in a ternary rhythm with instrumental accompainment, usually performed in a 16. Acitivity 1: Ask your parents, grandparents, neighbours... about traditional songs. -1)Prepair a small questionary: - About the interviewed: name, age, profession - About the song: title, how did he/she know about it, function and way to sing it (with dance, with instruments...) -2)Ask the person to sing the song and record it -3)Select three recordings and make an exposition to your class. 17. Folkloric Instruments 18. Many instruments come from other cultures and are then accepted in the cultured music: Guitar, Lute, Rabel... come from the arabic music. Sometimes, the people take the objects from the cotidian life: Pan, bottles, mortero... 19. We can see some of these instruments in the 'tuna' (click on the picture) 20. Is influenced by the syncopated rhythms of the ragtime and uses the militar bands wind instruments. *A short documentary about the Jazz origins 27. Rock & Roll It originated from the mix of Blues, Country, Electric guitar and Drums. It appeared in 1954 withthe song Rock around the clock. Soul Is the black vocal music Aretha Franklin Ray Charles Other movies: Cadillac Records The Supremes 29. FOLK The american folk comes from the Blues and often uses the harmonic and the guitar. One type of american folk is the Country, that has irish influence. 30. POP Melodic lines from Folk + Electric guitar from Rock 31. ROCK Critical lyrics + Distorted guitars 32. Other styles born from Pop, Rock and technologies are Heavy Metal Punk *Heavy metal develops in many styles * Punk presents very critical lyrics and a very simple melodies and harmonies, with fast rhythms. 33. Grunge Hip hop *Kurt Cobain, from Nirvana, became an icon for his generation. *Hip Hop is not only a music, is an urban style (rap, breakdance, graffiti) 34. Electronic Music The appearance of the synthesizers, the beat boxes and the samplings from funk songs resulted in several styles like electro-funk and techno.
