It has both bite and weight, making it ideal for ballads, folk songs and classical guitar pieces. We captured many useful musical aspects, such as picked accompaniment, glissandos and vibrato notes. Our Kontakt script enables realistic solo lines as well as pattern playing. six-stringedluteguitar,madebyLevin.
Inthelate1800s,HermanCarlsonLevinspent
someyearsinAmericaandlearnedhowto
makeguitars.UponreturningtoSwedenat
theturnofthe20thcentury,hefoundedhis
ownluthierybusiness.Ourinstrumentwas
madebyLevinin1946andhasserialnumber
169178.
Theguitarismadeofsolidwood,witharoundbodyshapeandshortneck.Forthisrecording,itwas
equippedwithd’Addariofolknylonstrings.
Itisanidealinstrumentforballads,folksongsandclassicalguitarpieces.Wecapturedmanyuseful
musicalaspectsoftheguitar,suchaspickedaccompaniment,glissandosandvibratonotes.

Articulations
ThebuttonsselectthearticulationthatyouhearwhenplayingtheFolkLuteGuitar.Fourarticulationsareavailable,andtheyaremutuallyexclusive:
• NormalSustain:aclassicsustainedguitarsound,withthreeroundrobinsforeveryrecordednote.
• VibratoSustain:similartonormalsustain,butperformedwithgentlevibrato.
• Harmonics:bell-likeharmonicsperformedbylightlyrestingafingeronthestringtoaccentuateovertones.
• Percussion/Fretnoises:avarietyofmulti-velocitypercussivetaps(C2-B2inclusive)andfretnoises(C3-B6inclusive).

TheNormalSustain,VibratoSustain,andHarmonicsarticulationsaremappedfromC2-C6inclusive.ThePercussion/FretnoisesarticulationismappedfromC2-B6inclusive.Whenyouchangearticulations,theplayablekeysturnyellowontheKontakton-screenkeyboard.

WhenusingtheNormalSustainandVibratoSustainarticulations,raisingthemodulationwheelonyourMIDIkeyboardtemporarilyswitchesbetweenthesearticulationsforthenextplayednote.
So,whentheNormalSustainarticulationisselected,raisingthemodulationwheelswitchestemporarilytotheVibratoSustainarticulation.Correspondingly,whentheVibratoSustainarticulationisselected,raisingthemodulationwheelswitchestemporarilytotheNormalSustainarticulation.
WhentheHarmonicsorPercussion/Fretnoisesarticulationsareselected,raisingthemodulationwheeldoesnotaffectthearticulation.
! IfyouwishtodrawmodulationinyourDAW,thethresholdatwhichCC1switchesarticulationsis64.
Release
Level:setsthevolumeindecibelsofthestringreleasesamplesthatsoundwhenanormalsustain,vibratosustain,orharmonicnotestopsplaying.
Releasesampleplaybackhasbeentweakedtodecreaseinvolumerelativetothedurationoftheplayednote.Thisgivesarealisticeffect,wherebystaccatoplayingcreatesmoreprominentreleasenoises.
! Inlegatomode,releasesamplesaretriggeredintelligentlytosuittheplayingstyle.Legatomodeisdescribedbelow.

At0%,thevolumeofthesoundisunaffectedbyhowhardyouplay.At100%,thevolumeofthesoundisstronglyaffectedbyhowhardyouplay.
Stereo
Width:setsthestereoimageoftheinstrument.At0%,youheartheinstrument’snaturalsound,recordedinstereo.
Turningthedialcounter-clockwisetowards-100%narrowsthestereoimage,untilthesoundismonoat-100%.
Turningthedialclockwisetowards+100%stretchesthestereoimageforanextra-wideeffect.
Envelope
Attack:setsthetimeinmillisecondsforthesoundoftheinstrumenttoreachfullvolumewhenanoteisplayed.

• +/-2st:overlappingnoteswithinanintervalof+/2stareplayedusinglegatosamples.
• +/-3st:overlappingnoteswithinanintervalof+/3stareplayedusinglegatosamples.
• +/-4st:overlappingnoteswithinanintervalof+/4stareplayedusinglegatosamples.

Compressor
Threshold:setsthevolumeindecibelsabovewhichthesoundisreducedinvolumebythecompressor.Inotherwords,soundsoverthethresholdwillbequietenedbythecompressor.
Makeup:setstheamountindecibelsbywhichthevolumeisincreasedafterprocessingbythecompressor.Thisallowsyoutocompensateforthecompressor’sreductioninvolumeofsoundsthatexceedthethreshold.
Mix:setsthebalancebetweenuncompressedandcompressedsounds.At0%,youhearonlytheuncompressedsound,asifthecompressorwereoff.At100%,youhearonlythecompressedsound.
On/Off:enablesordisablesthecompressor.

Feedback:setstheextenttowhichrepetitionsgeneratedbythedelayarefedbackintothedelay,toproducemorerepetitions.At100%,thedelaycontinuesregeneratingindefinitely.
On/off:enablesordisablesthedelayeffect.
Tone:setsthehigh-frequencydampingoftherepetitionsgeneratedbythedelay,where0%providesnodamping,and100%providesfulldampingforadarkersound.
