From the Chronicler!

Hello my wonderful readers,

We started this month off with Spring War and the Great Southern

Gathering. At the end of September Stowe-on-the-Wowld began fighter

practice at Parramatta Park on Saturday afternoons and has been running

nicely. For more details check out the information listed later in Folia Roani.

This month we hear from our new Captain of Archers, Ulric Johansson. We

also have a profile of our Southern friends in Okewaite.

Lately I’ve heard quite a few ladies mention they want to make a German

piece of garb. Many of them haven’t done German before. A while back I

found a wonderful article about German (female) garb for beginniers written

by Lady Gillian Brampton. I have included the first part of this article, with

the second part being in the December edition.

Coming at the beginning of November we have the upcoming Spring Crown

held by House Radburne, Dubbo. Hope that as many of you as possible can attend to make it a glorious event. I

unfortunately cannot attend so I’d like if people could give me some feedback to report in next month’s Folia Roani.

The same goes with any event, drop me an email and give me feedback on all our wonderful events so that the rest of

Rowany can find about our wonderful groups within the Barony. You can contact me at:

http://rowany.lochac.sca.org/?page_id=93&officer=chronicler

Yours faithfully,

Dragana Rózsa

From the Seneschal

It’s been another busy period with fun been had at Spring War and various

people ready to compete in the ultimate tournament for the ultimate prize of

Crown of our great Kingdom.

In the world of organisation we have a number of messages and things going

on.

In the various halls we hire we must make sure we obey the hiring

rules. Usually meaning no Ball Games or Pets. I am aware that I was

one of the people playing ball games in a hall and have slapped my

own hands

We have a new Herald. Nikolaus of Teubarum has a number of ideas

and plans and we look forward to his input and energy Picture D. Rózsa. Spring War 2011

We have had tournaments happening in central Rowany with good numbers.

Yule will take place on the first Saturday of December at Petersham and will be awesome.

Next meeting (which will be on Tuesday 8/11/11) we will discuss various ideas on promoting and

marketing our barony to the world and how to look at the type of people we want.

We need an Acquisitior. Please apply to me if interested

We need a Constable. Please apply to me if interested.

We are looking into a new Marquee for the barony

We are looking at running an event for the 30 years of festival.

If you have anything you want or need or if you have great event ideas come see me at the numerous places i

am at.

Good luck to everyone going in crown.

Photo D. Rózsa Baronial Changeover July 2011

From the Baronage Greeting all, With much pleasure we send tidings to the populace of the Barony, we have had a hectic mundane month and have missed most of this month. We are however looking forward with much anticipation to the month of November. Our most excellent house Radburne, defending our southern borders, prepares to dazzle the kingdom its many abilities as it hosts November Crown. I hope as many of the greater Barony can make it to the event as possible. To be to say “I was

there when…” The fair College of St Ursula will be having its celebration of its Saint and her many martyrs.

We hear tell of how we will be hosted in the splendour of Grecian style. Also there is rumour that the house of Casa Celi is planning a spectacular for Yule. However only time will tell, maybe the Sun on a Stick Players will make an appearance. Closer to this month we hear Theodulf organised the most recent Thursday tournament, it is pleasing to see this become a fixture in our day to day calendar. I look forward to competing in the next one.

Faithfully Baroness Anora and Baron Loyola

Photo D. Rózsa Baronial Changeover tourney July 2010

From the Captain of Archers

Want to fight better in wars? We have the solution for YOU! Ever been shot in the head by that archer you didn‟t even see? Realised that

you‟ve been gut shot by a pike because the shield wall opened when you

weren't watching? Had a heavy wander up behind your unit & wipe it out

because no-one saw him coming? A warfield is a big, nasty place, and if

you keep dying over & over, you‟re probably doing something wrong. We

can help you to survive, fight better & even get some kills of your own!

War fighting uses a different mindset & set of skills from tourney fighting.

It also requires practice, communication & teamwork. In a shield wall, do

you know how the fighters on each side of you fight? Can you rely on them

to protect you, & do they trust you to protect them? Here‟s your chance to

learn, along with the opportunity for more fighting time.

Rowany needs a good war unit for Festival & beyond, and that requires

training & practice. Therefore the Barony will be running regular War

Practices on dates & locations to be announced on the Rowany website &

the Rowany list. War practices will be run by the new Rowany Captain of

Archers, Ulric Johansson of House Drakkar. Come along, bring your

weapons & armor, including mesh, for the chance to learn how to stay alive longer, fight better & be more effective for

your Barony.

Also, if you are interested in taking up archery, authorizing in combat archery, or just have any questions, feel free to send

a message at http://rowany.lochac.sca.org/?page_id=93&officer=archery

A Beginner’s Guide to 16th Century German Women’s Dress –

How to look like a Frau. By Lady Gillian Brampton

Part 1:

Hans Holbein – Portrait of a woman in a

yellow dress

There‟s no doubt about it: the German woman had an individualistic way

of dressing compared to that of her English or French counterparts. For the

most part, there were no corsets or support skirts (farthingale), no

outrageous headwear (that is, the gable hood) and a conservatism of fabric

that would have had an English woman dying of shock. For the purposes of

today‟s discussion, I‟ll be concentrating mainly on what is known as the

Landsknecht style.

The Landsknechts were professional soldiers, employed to recruit and train

both local men and Dutch refugees to fight in the wars in the Low

Countries – as Holland and Flanders are now called. These German

speaking mercenaries and their women came from Bavaria, Tyrol, Swabia,

and other parts of the Western Holy Roman Empire.

Their brightly coloured clothing was "flashy" even by the standards of their

own time. Sumptuary laws which kept the English from wearing clothing

above their station did not apply to Landsknechts.

The Emperor Maximilian was infamously quoted as saying the lives of the

Landsknechts were so miserable and short that they deserved so wear

flashy stuff.

As with any outfit from period, there are several layers to consider if you

want to look like you just stepped out of a Cranach painting. Let‟s go from

the inside out, starting from the layer closest to the skin, the hemd (or

chemise) to the various accessories that always add the finishing touches to

any outfit.

Source: http://www.st-max.org/costume-female.htm

The Hemd (chemise)

In period, this would have been made from linen, or silk if

you were really well off, and always white. Why bother

having a coloured garment that no one would see for the

most part; the colour would only fade eventually because

this was the layer that was most often washed and period

dyes weren‟t necessarily as colourfast as our modern dyes.

Coloured banding, a braid of some kind or embroidery

around the neckline and smocking was an option for a

more fancy pants look.

Sleeve length would have been long sleeves which could

be tucked up under a shorter sleeved gown (I‟ll get to

those later). A good length for the hemd is to the knees.

Any longer and it would get too dirty too quickly (think of

the dust at Festival) and probably stick to your hose; any

shorter and your knees would get cold.

Page 6: FOLIA ROANI - rowany.lochac.sca.org · A Beginner’s Guide to 16th Century German Women’s Dress – How to look like a Frau. By Lady Gillian Brampton Part 1: Hans Holbein – Portrait

6

For us, an alternative to linen is cotton voile; it‟s light and cheap and will stand up to repeated throws into the

washing machine. Personally, I prefer to have fewer chemises made of linen than loads made from voile as

linen, even though it can be a heavier fabric, is actually a lot cooler to wear against the skin than cotton.

The Underskirt/Petticoat/whatever it’s called in German.

Depending on the look you‟re after, this can be either made as a rectangular tube gathered into a waistband or

as trapezoids gathered into a waistband. For the most part, the typical decoration was guards, or strips of fabric

in rows running horizontally around the hem. In some instances, there were triangles or even patchwork in

earlier periods, but simple guards were the most popular and generally two or more.

End of Part 1….

(Part 2 To be continued in the December Folia Roani)

WELCOME TO OKEWAITE!

The name for the group is “Okewaite”, made up of name elements from the English Midlands. It means “watch tower in an oak tree”. Okewaite is situated in Goulburn, NSW - ideally placed between Sydney and Canberra. We're a small group of vast interests, from cooking and recipes to dying and spinning, sewing, beading, jewellery making and of course archery, rapier and heavy fighting. . There aren't many of us, so we tend to wear multiple hats, do a bit of everything, and pitch in - it's great for trying new things.

We meet every Tuesday (except the second Tuesday of the month) at the Girl Guides hall, and weather permitting there may be some fighter training as well. Every third Sunday of the month sees the Okewaite Revel - with a class of some sort in the afternoon and a garbed pot-luck gathering in the early evening.

For further information see the web site: http://okewaite.wordpress.com/ or contact the Seneschal, Honore Corbaut ([email protected] ) with any queries. So to recap our activities: Tuesday night - 7:30pm - weekly A&S and fighter practice

Monthly Revel - 3rd Sunday - 3:30pm to 8:30pm - garbed gathering,

competitions, classes and potluck dinner.

Both are held at Goulburn Girl Guides hall, Victoria Park,

Faithfull St, Goulburn

Unto the Populace of the Kingdom of Lochac, greetings.

The SCA is an organisation that works because we work together ... to achieve feats, to create wondrous items and to

inspire great acts. It is in the power of every member of the Populace to let the Crown know who has helped, amazed or

inspired you. Recognition comes from the Crown, yet the Crown must rely on Their people to provide details so that the

worthy can be rewarded.

With the Spring Crown Tournament approaching, and the next Coronation not far away, now is the time to let the

Crown know of the great deeds done by those around you.

Think of someone who you believe is worthy of recognition. Have they been recognised recently? To check, it is a simple

visit to the Canon Lore website - http://lochac.sca.org/canon - and check against their SCA name.

If you believe the person deserves an award they do not have, use the "recommend for an award" link at the bottom of

the page. If they do not have a page, then perhaps they have even missed out on an Award of Arms - in which case,

email [email protected] and politely let the Crown know about this oversight, and why that person deserves

recognition.

It is my honest believe that one of the things this Society does well is have a robust system to recognise achievement in

all the many ways people contribute. Alas, one of the things we don't do (as well as we could) is make use of that

system. If we don't lift up our fellow travellers to be recognised, who will?

In service to the Dream

Tunic Making Gatherings at the Marrickville Hall

Posted 19th

October – Rowanites list

We started making the Hospit tunics last night, so that there's enough for Festival next year (a.k.a. 'two weeks away').

Thanks for Baroness Annora and Lady Juliana we had more sewing machines than sew-ers, but we got two finished and

about ten more cut out. Thanks too to Lady Ameline who donated the fabric we've been using so far!

We'll be spending the next few Tuesdays finishing off these tunics, so if you'd like a hand making tunics for yourself, or if

you'd like to lend a hand to help out, you'll be most welcome. If you're looking for some company while you complete

your project, come on down.

And if you're interested in de-stashing and adding a few more colours of fabric to the hospit pile (so they don't all look

like Gryffindor supporters), that would be most welcome, too!

The Tuesday Baronial meet is much quieter than Thursday Fighter Practice, and there's loads of cutting and pinning

space. The hall also has a few power points (although bringing a power board is a good idea).

Once we've finished these tunics, we'll move on to the next Baronial project - watch this space (or make your

suggestions)!

I hope all who braved the weather at Spring War, last week end, enjoyed the event. Due to illness, we were unable to

announce the results of the two Arts and Sciences competitions during the event, so here is the information. In the

Barony of Mordenvale our Arts and Sciences competitions are outcome based, with all entrants striving to produce an

entry of suitable complexity to become a Contender for the Mordenvale Baronial A&S Championship. Rather than one

winner, all entrants have the potential to become a Contender.

Campsite Improvement

Alexous of Uri again reached the status of Contender, with her entry of a coil formed cooking pot, fired in the Dark Ages

encampment during the event.

A Brew fit for a King

First, it is our pleasure to acknowledge the high quality of all the entries. Two entrants have also become

Contenders: Wulfwine o' Grimwald for his Sahti and Jalkijuana, and Elenale Bruestere for her Ypocras. The other entries

were just a few points chasing, so, well done to all.

Thanks,

Heilwich Gheerts

Baronial Senate Meeting 11th October 2011

Rowany Baronial Senate Minutes

Meeting held: 11 October 2011.

Meeting opened: 7:13pm

## Item Action

1. St Augustine

International Night Market made a surplus

and increased exposure (interest shown from four

people!)

Business cards could still be useful

Contacted Macquarie University‟s equivalent

group and informed them about upcoming events

Seneschal to get cards to

Maximillian

2. Arts and Sciences

Mini-ball successful

Next Mini-ball tentatively scheduled for 18 November

A&S has been happening on Tuesdays and Thursdays, variable attendance

Del considering running semi-regular dance classes. Proposed second Tuesday.

Looking for ideas for what to do on the 4th

Tuesday of the month (since the first three

are now booked).

3. Baron and Baroness (in absentia re marriage)

4. Captain of Archers (in absentia)

Combat archery is happening.

Needs to be helped onto the mailing list

5. Captain of Rapier (in absentia)

6. Chronicler (in absentia)

October Folia is out, and well received.

Needs more contact from people

Captain ofArchers to report for next Folia

7. Chirurgeon (in absentia)

Nothing to report

What is happening about getting people

trained?

Seneschal to investigate

8. Constable (VACANT)

Previous officer moved away

Former housemate(s) may have officer records

Seneschal to investigate

9. Herald

Hopeful replacement herald introduced: Nikolaus of Teubarum (needs Crux approval)

Change-over planned for Yule

Little happening with Baronial registrations (waiting for Kingdom to send off),

probably around a dozen submissions in the past six months.

Introduction from new Herald: been in the SCA since 1999, formed his own

household, interested in heraldry (more in the pageantry than the yelling, but believed by

others to be good at that too).

10. Hospitaller

Ursula has returned Baronial hospit.

Hopit-making session planned for next

Tuesday. If people can bring fabric, loaner garb

can be made.

20

11. Lists (in absentia)

12. Marshal

Thursday tournaments are going well. Next

one is this coming Thursday, and is a modified

round-robin tournament (unless numbers don‟t

work).

Rattan has been acquired from Gabriel de

Beaumont.

Costs for previous order details needed.

Spring War was wet.

Suggested (by seneschal) that heavy and

archery war practices should be combined when

possible.

Next war practice to be advised.

Seneschal to arrange payment

Reeve to supply

Marshal to set date and

advertise.

13. Okewaite

More events are running (Tuesday meetings, monthly Revels)

Combined Guild Day was small but successful.

14. Radburne

Request for Baronial Marquee and Hangings to be taken to Crown. Paddy to collect

and Sorle to co-ordinate and manage transport.

About 70 people booked for Crown, including (it seems) about 6 entrants.

List keeper needs to be appointed.

15. Reeve (in absentia)

Sydney City bill paid.

Torg paid.

Berenger paid.

Barony still owes Bethan.

Seneschal to organise

payment.

16. Seneschal

Needs to clear his „to be actioned‟ list.

Seeking suggestions to advertise/market the

Barony to the mundane public at large – but still

looking for the quality we have become

accustomed to. Ideas could include teaser posters

for community boards, with only website or email

details, to be spread in areas around Sydney.

Tablecloths returned washed and (mostly)

cleaned.

Seneschal to design sample for

next Baronial meeting. Request

that everyone else think of ideas

for other advertising approaches.

17. Stowe-on-the-Wowld (in absentia)

Still have some items from Baronial changeover to return

18. St Ursula

New Seneschal: New to the SCA this year

(joined up at O-week). Came to Festival and other

events during the year. Happy to take on the roll

and looking forward to putting back into the

College and the SCA.

AGM has been had:

o Seneschal: Skarp-Hedin Sverdvarpnir

o Reeve: Yorick

o Marshal: Theodolphus

o Captain of Archers: Sigvald

Ursualan feast upcoming (12 Nov), with

Resolution 11102011#1:

That the Barony will fund the

attendance for the Crown and

landed Baron and Baronesses at

any Rowany College events where

the College’s university requires

there are ‘no free tickets’.

CARRIED UNANIMOUSLY

St Ursulan Seneschal to

provide more detailed proposal.

21

tourney, music and dancing. Request for Barony to

fund royal peers (K&Q, B&Bs) to attend

“ACCESS card” events so that funding can meet

Sydney University rules.

Proposal made to modify college management

to support the College of St Augustine by creating

a College Seneschal with a Deputy Seneschal (St

Ursula) and Deputy Seneschal (St Augustine).

O-week preparations (including more co-

ordination between the two Colleges) to start a lot

sooner than previously.

There is a desire to increase College fighter

practice (and make it more public at University).

There are various potential female fighters who

need help getting kitted out as there is little

female-appropriate loaner gear.

Proposal to run a mini-ball as close to O-week

as possible to help „sell‟ other activities in the

SCA.

19. Webminister

Site up to date, collecting visit statistics.

Waiting to hear from Masonry regarding email addresses.

General Business

20. Yule Feast
