It is with great pleasure that the Núcleo Música Nova (Universidade Estadual do Paraná – Escola de Música e Belas Artes do Paraná) organizes the second edition of the SiMN – International Symposium of New Music and Computer Music. In celebration of the Year of Germany in Brazil (2013-2014) we have the honor of joining forces with the EXPERIMENTALSTUDIO des SWR (Freiburg, Germany) – pioneers in the development of European electroacoustic music– and their very own matrix on tour itinerant festival. The group specializes in the performance of music by renowned composers such as Luigi Nono, Karlheinz Stockhausen, Brian Ferneyhough, Helmut Lachenmann, Mark-André, Dániel Péter Biró, Flo Menezes, among others. This year’s matrix on tour will be presented for the first time outside of Europe in collaboration with the SiMN.

The first edition of the SiMN took place in the city of Curitiba (Paraná, Brazil) between December 3rd and 5th of 2012. We were thrilled to start our very own new music festival with special guests such as Ralf Ehlers (Arditti Quartet), composers Dániel Péter Biró (University of Victoria, Canada), Rodolfo Coelho de Souza (Universidade de São Paulo, Brazil), and James Corrêa (Universidade Federal de Pelotas, Brazil). The SiMN also featured the participation of Fábio Scarduelli (guitar, Unicamp), Ulisses Galetto (music technology, UFPR), André Egg (musicologist, FAP), Fabrício Ribeiro (flute, Orquestra Sinfônica do Paraná), and Felipe de Almeida Ribeiro (composer, EMBAP).The symposium received the application of 40 young composers’ from Argentina, Brazil, China, Japan, Spain, Singapore, UK, Uruguay and the USA. Ten young composers were selected to participate in several activities, such as reading sessions and master classes with Ralf Ehlers (viola) and Fabrício Ribeiro (flute), lectures and composition group lessons with Dániel Péter Biró and Rodolfo Coelho de Souza, and workshops on music technology with James Corrêa (synthesis) and Ulisses Galetto (recording techniques).During three days, the Symposium presented concerts filled with much of seminal musical repertoire of the 20th century, alongside commissions by present-day composers. The first day focused on pieces by Luciano Berio, Toru Takemitsu, Almeida Prado and Felipe de Almeida Ribeiro. The second concert emphasized an electroacoustic repertoire with pieces by Karlheinz Stockhausen, Steven Takasugi, and James Corrêa. The third and final day featured Ralf Ehlers in a solo viola concert, with music by Salvatore Sciarrino, Gérard Grisey, Luciano Berio, and guest composers of the festival. The SiMN 2012 was made possible with the kind support of the Art Mentor Foundation Lucerne, the Canada Council for the Arts, the Araucária Foundation, and the Escola de Música e Belas Artes do Paraná.

After 35 years of presence in the international new music business it has established itself as leading ensemble for performing ambitious compositions with live-electronics and gives concerts regularly at almost all important festivals (like Berliner Festwochen, Wiener Fest-wochen, Salzburger Festspielen, Festival d’Automne à Paris, Biennale di Venezia) as well as many well-known music theatres (like Teatro alla Scala Mailand, Carnegie Hall New York, Théâtre de la Monnaie, Teatro Real Madrid) to name but a few. Outstanding compositions in music history that were created at the EXPERIMENTALSTUDIO were created there by well-known composers as Pierre Boulez, Karlheinz Stockhau-sen, Christobal Halffter, Vinko Globokar, Emmanuel Nunes and Luigi Nono, whereas Nono produced almost all works of his late period in close relationship with the studio and its team there.
Since its first performance, his “tragedia dell’ascolto” Prometeo has been realized through the EXPERIMEN-TALSTUDIO and his former artistic director André Richard more than 50 times, and can be called as a milestone in music history of the 20th centuray that points the way.
