    Fogra Colour Management Symposium 2012

Identifying and reproducing colour expectations230 participants from over 20 coun-tries attended the 3rd Colour Manage-ment Symposium in Munich (Germany),organized by Andreas Kraushaar. Themotto of this event was Printing theexpected, hence reproducing customerexpectations.

The first session focused on MEDIA-ETA DATA PEPAATIO.Haeme lrich (ulrich-media), our first

speaker, reported about the successfuland appropriate combination of varioustypes of media which he called multi-platform monetization. Bernd Zipper

understanding from the creation side isthe jungle of tools, profiles, colour spac-es and rendering intents. Jrgen Seitz(GMG) said: Where colour is invented, colour management has not yet arrived.Within this context hereferred to the Process-Standard Digital (PSD),which now providesguidelines for industrystandard digital print-

ing.Dr Jan Morovic(HP) showed thatthe preparation

The third session, moderated by MarkusBarbieri (Barbieri Electronic), focusedon COMMICATIO OF COO.Dieter Franzke (X-ite) gave an over-view of the state of the art colourmeasurement technology and presented

a preview of upcoming trends such asimage analysis. Here

a spatial resolvedimage capture isneeded to fully

measure the imageappearance. Colourmeasurement valuesare like tax returns,

    OrganisatorAndreas

Kraushaar Social event at Deutsches MuseumDiscussion highly welcomed at all Fogra symposia

(lecturer at niversity of Wuppertal)shared his negative findings from hisevaluation of 1,000 online shops. Thefocus of this presentation and the fol-

lowing talk of Olaf Drmmer (callas)were to invite print service provid-ers to concentrate on their customersneeds and abilities. This can be doneby means of an enhanced visualizationof the resulting printed product whereinteractive customer feedback may helpto set up automated workflows. Blindflight is not an option, said Olaf Drm-mer and called for transparent printservice providers.

    COETIOA AD MODE

COO MAAGEMET WOK-FOWS were discussed in the secondsession. One reason for the lack of

of images for the printing process isgoverned by many factors, such as thepreservation of colour names and mod-ulations. Therefore a standardization of

a uniform colour gamut mapping proc-ess is still subject of current research. It is unlikely that a standardization willbe available soon. The different strate-gies that are currently in use require thecreative professionals to visually doublecheck the result e.g. by means of a softcopy or a hard copy proof. Craig evie(FJIFIM) gave an insight into a recentstandardization activity with the lastpresentation of this session. Mr evietalked about adding metadata on animage by image level that specifies the

concrete gamut mapping and separa-tion strategy anticipated by the imagedesigner.

you can simply accept them, but if youwant to optimize them you need tounderstand them, said Dr Franzke. In the following talk Thomas Fuchs

(ithec) presented useful tips for col-our control at the press console. Opti-mal colour control strategies lead to a

reduction of maculature and an achieve-ment of the printing aims designed andpreviewed at the prepress. Bearing inmind the present context of extensive

use of substrates with a high amount ofoptical brightener agents (OBA) ClaasBickebller (Konica Minolta Sensing)presented practical approaches andsolutions based on the new measure-ment mode M1. This measurementmode is part of the new ISO 13655standard that stipulates the require-ment for typical graphic arts measure-ment modes. We must measure as wesee, said Claas Bickebller. There willonly be a visual and an instrumental

match when optical brightener agentsare stimulated in the same way as theyare viewed. Fogra is currently develop-ing practical implementations besides

from the cumbersome creation of indi-vidual characterization data.

After the brief introduction of the

exhibitors a panel discussion about theITEACTIO OF THE ECET ISO3664:2009 compliant viewing cabinetswith substrates with a high amount ofoptical brighteners was set up at shortnotice. Participants from the industryused this opportunity to discuss withthe manufacturers. The users mainlyidentified communication problems ofthe possible effects rather than techni-cal sources of errors. Andreas Kraushaarinvited everyone to participate in andcontribute to the current investigation

in order to jointly develop a characteri-zation data for OBA-rich papers along-side with a user guide.

The SOCIA EEIG took place inthe Deutsches Museum for the firsttime. The director of the museum Prof.Heckl opened the event with a welcome

speech. The impressive location of theDeutsches Museum provided a perfectbackground for Tom ianzas (X-ite)keynote speech about the past and thefuture of ICC colour management. Manyparticipants took the opportunity to

    join guided museum tours.

The second day started with the fifthsession that was moderated by PeterMarkovic (EFI). The session focussed onpractical tips in POCESS COTO

EATED TO COO MAAGE-MET. At the beginning Marc Mahy(Agfa Graphics) showed that modernworkflows need dynamic colour engines

(conventional dumb CMM) to meetcurrent requirements. He illustratedexamples regarding important fea-tures such as spot colour simulation,

the channel-preserving transforma-tion using device link transformationsas well as automatic image recognitionand optimization. Florian Sl (ZipconConsulting) spoke about the practicalimplementation of the ProcessStandardDigital (PSD) using the example of thefirst PSD-certified company - aserinein Berlin.Global machine profiles are the prac-tical answer to the growing amountof different machines, substrates andprinting modes. Jan ukat (Alprinta)

shared a lot of his practical findingsfinishing his talk with the creation of

spectrally based output profiles for EDlight boxes.

The sixth session was moderated by

Peter Karp (Fogra). While the previoussessions concentrated on printing, thissession focussed on EPODCTIOB MEAS OF SMA AD AGEMOITOS. Mr Karp reported aboutthe current potentials and the limita-tions related to colour accuracy whendisplaying colour. Following this presen-tation, Dr Stefan Helling (caddon) spokeabout the possibilities of immediatelyadjacent samples in terms of colourmatching. In contrast to this the colour

expectations regarding electronic sig-nage were described by Michael Bailly(EC Display solutions). After a histori-cal review and an overview of exist-

ing display technologies Mr Bailly gavean outlook of potential segments thatrequire high colour accuracy.

COO MAAGEMET I TEX-TIE PITIG dominated the seventhsession. The session was moderated byClaude Tschappeler (ErgoSoft). He pro-vided the audience with an introductionto textile printing and pointed out itsdifferences to traditional printing proc-esses. Among others these differencesare related to the generation of testcharts and the measurement of textilesamples. Subsequently uis Garcia (HP)reported on implementation exampleswith an emphasis on textile printing

    with latex printers.

The speakes of the final session gave anoutlook on FTE DEEOPMETSin the field of colour management. DrPhilip rban (T Darmstadt) talkedabout the challenges of the measur-ing and the modelling of interferencecolours. After that Max Derhak (OX)talked about the current and futuredevelopments of the ICC. Dr Peter Zol-liker (EMPA) started the last lecturewith the last slide that he had shown atthe previous colour management sym-posium in 2010. He pointed out that

pixel-to-pixel transformations, as cur-rently used in default ICC applications,

had come to their limits. Only a con-textual (spatial resolved) colour trans-formation that takes into account thecontext of the image allows a completeimage appearance communication. Hepointedly suggested Appearance Man-agement Symposium to be the title forthe next symposium.
