Tennis NewsThe Fields Club welcomes Jeff Weaver and his staff as Interim Tennis Director!

With his proven m a n a g e m e n t skills and busi-ness experience, we are excited to bring Jeff Weaver on board as our Director of Tennis. Jeff, a USPTA P-1 certified professional, has been develop-ing top national juniors in the Atlanta area since 1992. He brings 20 years of performance-minded experience to the courts and provides a unique learning environment that will benefit any player with the desire to improve.

After graduating from the University of West Georgia, Jeff spent 4 years serving as the Head Professional at Horseshoe Bend Country Club. In 1994, he founded ACE Tennis Academy, which quickly grew into the largest tennis academy in the country (encompassing 7 sites in 4 states with over 500 com-petitive juniors and over 30 coaches). Under Jeff’s leadership, ACE has pro-duced eight #1 players in the country with over 95% of graduating seniors going on to play college tennis.

Jeff and his staff are looking forward to providing a family-oriented experience for our members and building a strong sense of community through new pro-gramming for players of all ages and levels.

Jeff lives in Roswell with his lovely wife Suzanne and their two boys Lorenzo and Vincent.

Yancy has over 27 years of expe-rience coaching both juniors and adults and is a USPTR certified professional. He served as the Director of Ten-nis for Pinelog Park in Rockdale County (1995-2009). During his time at Pinelog Park he coached over 20 city championship USTA & ALTA teams and many of the juniors under Yancy’s guidance have gone on to have success-ful college careers.

A 1989 graduate of the University of North Alabama, Yancy served as an assistant coach for his alma mater and for the University of West Georgia. Over his playing career Yancy has been ranked in the top 20 nationally and as high as number 1 in the Southern sec-tion.

Yancy and his wife Shirley have two young children, Bailey and Zach. Zach is following in his dad’s footsteps and is currently competing at a Southern level.

John Lawrence is originally from Atlanta, Ga. and trained at ACE tennis academy as a junior. Dur-ing this time he reached top 10 in the south and competed in national and international events. He started his coaching career working as the Junior Coordinator in Wilmington, North Carolina at prestigious Cape Fear Country Club.

John has been coaching with ACE since 2009 with his primary focus on advanced junior development. During this time he has helped guide many players from beginner state level compe-tition into southern and national com-petitors. John enjoys affecting people in a positive way through coaching tennis.

Tennis NewsAndrea Terrill, a by-product ACE Tennis Academy, has been play-ing tennis for over 20 years. Growing up in Roswell, GA, she was involved in ALTA and USTA through Horseshoe Bend Country Club. She joined ACE Tennis Academy at age 12 and worked her way up from a Georgia State Ranking to a National Ranking.

In High School, Andrea led the 11th Nationally Ranked Chattahoochee Cougars to a back-to-back State Cham-pionship in 1997 & 1998.

With extensive professional training and instruction from Jeff Weaver and his staff, Andrea earned a Division I NCAA Tennis Scholarship to East Carolina University where she played all 4 years. A spirited leader of the team, Andrea also served as President of the ECU Student Athletic Advisory Committee and served as Chair Person for the Con-ference USA Student Athletic Advisory Committee. At ECU she also served on the NCAA Steering Committee.

Graduating in 2002 with a Bachelor of Arts Degree in Communications with a minor in Theatre, Andrea moved to Los Angeles, CA. In Los Angeles, Andrea joined the Tennis Professional team at The Palisades Tennis Center in Pacific Palisades, CA, where she worked under Steve Bellamy, creator of the Tennis Channel.

She currently lives in Buckhead and is happily married to Bill Weatherford. She welcomed a new tennis partner into her life last year. Their son, Baker, is one-year-old and he can’t wait to get out on the court with Mama.

What: Peachtree Corners Golf League - Season 2

Location: River Pines Golf Course

Schedule: Every Monday - April 16 through August 27 (no play on Memorial Day)

Tee Times: 5:20 p.m. – 6:10 p.m.

Cost: Approx $24/person each week for greens fees. Cart and range balls included.

Membership: The league is open to anyone who loves to play golf

Points/Scoring: Each week, two two-person teams will compete against each other in a handicapped, match play format played over nine holes. Individual and team cumulative scores will be recorded and prizes awarded at the end of the season.

All players will establish a “league” handicap on their first day of play (USGA handicaps will not be used). This league handicap will allow those who do not have an established USGA handicap and/or are new to the game to participate. Handicaps will be recalculated after each round for use in the following weeks scoring

Teams can be made up of 2, 3, 4 or more players. It is up to the “team” to determine which two individuals will be in the lineup and play each week. This allows those individuals who cannot commit to 19 weeks to still participate during the season but on a more limited basis and at a reduced cost.

Questions: If interested in playing, contact Riverfield resident Michael

Understanding Exercise-Induced Weight Gain It is common knowledge that exercise burns calories and helps you to shed extra pounds.

Armed with this knowledge, many people think that losing weight should be easy with enough exercise. You may take this as bad news, but the truth is that for those who aren’t used to exercising and are out of shape, beginning an exercise program may actually lead to weight gain.

This fact, however, shouldn’t stop you from exercising, as you’ll eventually turn the weight corner and start losing.

What is it about exercise that may cause some people to gain instead of lose weight?

Muscle Mass: One of the main reasons exercising can lead to weight gain is that it promotes the growth of muscle mass.

If you are not used to working out and haven’t used certain muscles regularly, after exercising your muscles will be sore and will increase in size. While you may burn off fat, muscle is denser than fat. Therefore, the weight you gain is in your muscles.

And take heart. Since muscles take up less space than fat, your extra weight doesn’t necessarily translate to larger size. In fact, once you start working out, you’ll probably become thinner, even if you maintain your previous weight. Instead of using a scale to determine if you are slimming down, have your body fat tested regularly or measure your body at certain areas.

If you see that you’re losing inches, then you know you’re on the right track.

Cardiovascular activities like walking, running, or swimming will encourage the growth of lean, toned muscles. Other ac-tivities such as weight lifting promote the growth of larger, stronger muscles that contribute to weight gain.

But there is good news in this. If you stick with the exercise program, your muscles will soon stabilize in size and after a time, become toned. After your muscles are strong and able to handle more strenuous workouts, you will be able to burn calories faster.

While it may be frustrating and disappointing to see the scale go up after starting an exercise routine, it shouldn’t stop you from exercising. You may just be building muscle faster than losing body fat. This can be especially true if you’re genetically prone to building muscle fast. The key is to incorporate plenty

of cardio exercise in addition to strength training. That way you will burn plenty of calories during your routine and be more able to shed pounds.

Eating Habits: When you work out and burn calories, your body will feel the need to replace those burned calories.

This may make you feel hungrier than usual, which can cause you to eat more than normal - sometimes without knowing it. A good idea is to keep a food journal to track of the actual number of calories you are consuming.

You may also end up eating more calories and justifying their consumption since you’re exercising. After a good workout, you may see an ice cream sundae as a reward for the calo-ries you burned. Just be careful. If you’re interested in losing weight, you can’t simply break even with your caloric intake and the amount of calories you burn.

At the same time, eating too few calories can be counterpro-ductive and slow your weight loss. Without enough calories, your body may slow its metabolism. So eat plenty to keep your body well fueled, but choose healthy calories that will help your body recover after a workout and grow stronger.

Hydration: Depending on the time of day you weigh your-self, the scale may read differently. Your weight can fluctuate as much as five pounds depending on the amount of water or food you have recently consumed or the amount of water you have shed in sweat. It is therefore important to weigh yourself at the same time each day.

April-May 2012 Focus on the Fields 19

20 Focus on the Fields April-May 2012

1. Appliances. Some cities and states have appliance recycling or rebate programs. An older, less efficient appliance can be turned in for a rebate on a new energy-efficient model. Since 1993, the Association of Home Appliance Manufacturers has overseen the Appliance Recycling Information Center. The mission of this center is to serve as the authoritative source of information on the environmentally responsible disposal and recycling of appliances and to undertake research into the recycling of major household appliances. Individuals can use these resources to determine appliance recycling initiatives.

If a computer is in good working order, it may be sold or passed on to another person who can put it to use. Some seniors are not interested in RAM or processor speed. They just want a

means of connecting to the Internet and can benefit from a recycled machine. Otherwise, computers may be donated to less fortunate schools. For those who simply must recycle the machine, there are different drop-off zones for computers and peripherals, like printers. Some goodwill organizations will take them and turn them into profits.

2. Batteries. These pint-size sources of power contain heavy metals that can leak out into the ground and water supplies. They should be brought to recycling centers to be disposed of properly. Otherwise, consider buying recyclable batteries and a charger.

4. Mattresses. Thanks to bed bug epidemics, fewer people are willing to purchase or take on a used mattress. For those who are upgrading to a new mattress and have an old one to discard, check with the town to find out which transfer station will recycle the mattress. Some mattress stores will cart away an old mattress if a new one is purchased.

5. Scrap Metal. Those with scrap metal clogging up garages or basements can actually make some cash off these items. Scrap metal is in demand, and there are dealers who handle the sale and trade of these materials.

6. Cds and DVDs. The number of these plastic discs in circulation is high. Find out where they can be recycled or turn them into handy items for other uses. For example, use a CD as a reflector on a mailbox or at the end of the driveway.

7. CFL Bulbs. The compact fluorescent bulbs save energy but they should be recycled properly, thanks to the miniscule amount of mercury they contain. Some stores, like the furniture store IKEA, will collect them.

8. Toner and Ink Cartridges. Don’t discard those spent cartridges. Bring them back to office supply stores for recycling credit.

9. Oil. If individuals are changing their own motor oil, it will need to be taken to the transfer station or recycling center for proper recycling. Many commercial oil change businesses will recycle their oil, which makes paying for an oil change convenient and environmentally responsible.

9things you can recycle that you may not have known about

We all know we should recycle, and routinely place our newspapers, plastic bottles and aluminim cans at the curb for collection. But there are many other lesser known things that can be recycled. While these things may not be able to be placed at curbside, they can be dropped off at recycling centers.

Before an item is relegated to the trash can, people can do a little research and see if it can be recycled. Some companies or organizations pick up certain recyclables, saving individuals time and gas.

April-May 2012 Focus on the Fields 21

Sleeping QuartersLook for pet beds that are made from recyclable materials. Many get their fluffy feel from recycled plastic that is turned into pillow stuffing. Or better yet, make your own pet beds from clothing or blankets you normally would have disposed of. In fact, your pet may enjoy having your scent on these

items and the idea of familiar surroundings.

Sustainable GoodsChoose pet products made from sustainable materials. For example, you can purchase collars and leashes made from hemp or organic cotton. The same can be said for chew toys and scratching posts. Avoid pastic products, or ones that are not made from recyclable materials.

FoodMany pet foods are made from a lot of fillers and scrap materials. These include reconstituted animal by-products, otherwise known as low-grade wastes from the beef and

poultry industries. Instead, choose organic and natural pet foods that rely on meats from animals raised humanely. These foods are not treated with artificial preservatives.

Previously-Owned PetAdopting a pet helps reduce overcrowding in shelters and the destruction of unwanted animals. Love knows no pedigree, so choose a shelter pet that can use a good family. This also helps reduce pet store dependance on puppy mills, which tend to raise pets in poor conditions.

Spay or NeuterProtecting pet populations by preventing unmonitored reproduction can reduce animals’ impact on the planet. Stray cats can damage wildlife and deplete bird populations. Dogs running rampant are also troublesome. Making the investment to sterilize your pet can ward off trouble from overabundance.

Chemical-Free CleaningThe trend in household cleaning is to move away from chemical-laden cleaning products. The same can be said for keeping your pet fresh and cleaning up the house after him or her. Read labels for environmentally safe shampoos, detanglers and pet cleaning products.

The dog days of summer are just around the corner. Is your air conditioner ready to keep your family cool and comfortable? There are a few things you should check before you start up your central air condi-tioner. Your central air conditioner needs to have some basic yearly maintenance to keep things running properly and efficiently. While air conditioners are built to be tough and strong, they need regular maintenance to run smoothly. Did you know that an air conditioner is built to last for at least fifteen years? That may make you feel more secure with your air conditioner but if it is not taken care of properly, you may find that it last only half that time. What are the best ways to maintain your air conditioner?

• Get annual inspections from a trained Nate Certified heating and cooling tech-nician. The small cost of having them check it out will save you money in the long run. Good times to have those inspections completed are before the warm weather starts and after the warm

weather leaves. Look into a yearly Service Plan that will cover both of these mainte-nance visits and offer many benefits.

• Just as with your furnace, it is important to change your filter every month. Fil-ters keep your air conditioner working properly and economically. They tend to get blocked with pollutants and dust that are in the air. Dirty filters make your air conditioner run more often and that shortens the life of the air conditioner as well as cost you more money. Con-sider upgrading to a higher efficient air cleaner, Merv 10 or higher.

• The big compressor outside of your home needs your attention as well. It is a good idea to make sure there is no grass or weeds growing near the compressor. You should also make sure all outdoor planting is at least a two feet away from the compressor. Anything growing too close will make air flow in and out more difficult.

• Make sure the compressor unit is level and shows no signs of damage. Pay spe-cial attention to the fan housing to make sure it is not filled with debris.

Taking care of your air conditioner is some-thing we don’t usually think about until we need it to work. Taking these simple steps to care for your air conditioner will save you money in the long run on costly repairs. At the same time, making sure that your air conditioner is running efficiently means that you can save money on your energy bills. Following these steps will make you sleep easier at night and cost you less money. There are plenty of other fun things to do in the summer than taking care of an air conditioner that is not work-ing properly.

Spring is a great time to schedule your cool-ing system Tune-up and take advantage of discounts being offered. Call Premier Indoor Comfort today and start saving tomorrow.
